TARGET CAT-2019

CAT VERBAL SECTION-A CHALLENGE

Many of you—CAT aspirants, I mean—find the Verbal Section of CAT quite challenging. Indeed, you find it, in your own words, “vague” or “subjective”, because all answer choices seem to be the correct answer to the question asked. Some of you succeed in narrowing down to two answer choices, but there you get stuck. This is a common experience. You also find that different test-prep institutes and test-prep books give different “correct” answers for the same CAT question. So you reason that if “the authorities on the subject” can’t agree on ONE correct answer, then the problem must lie with the English language itself, which you conclude is essentially an imprecise medium with its many eccentricities.

On the other hand, your experience with Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation and Analytical Reasoning, the other areas of CAT, is very different: everything is so clear-cut and, most importantly, everyone agrees on the ONE correct answer; working hard in these areas produces immediate results and is gratifying. As a consequence, most of your efforts are concentrated in these areas to the neglect of the Verbal Section.

Learning or, let us say “memorising”, new words is laborious and frustrating. Learning grammar rules is pointless as they do not always hold true. Reading newspaper editorials and magazines is boring. Deductive reasoning is manageable: it is like maths, clear-cut with ONE correct answer, but what in the world is “inductive reasoning”?

“So where do I start and how do I prepare for the Verbal Section of CAT?”—this is your predicament.

I have tried to address this predicament in my teaching experience of over 18 years in the CAT-prep industry and experimented with different approaches while working with different test-prep institutes.  Each time I came up with the same answer: there are no short-cuts and an attempt to search for short-cuts is futile and counter-productive. After all, the CAT Verbal Section demands a high degree of proficiency in the English language: a life skill so vital for success not only in your professional career but also in your personal life.

The only effective approach is a comprehensive and integrated one—repeatedly borne out by the experience of successful candidates.

The problem is not with the English language but with the lack of familiarity with the variety of its patterns, structures and conventions and with the lack of understanding of its intrinsic logic. And let me assure you that once you have overcome that hurdle, the “vagueness” or the “subjectivity” of the English language will disappear, and you will instinctively home on to THE ONE correct answer.

This approach naturally requires sustained hard work over a long period before you can cross the plateau in the learning curve and before results start to show. More hard work, true, but greater payoff, that too in the long-term—well beyond CAT. Patience and focus are the key. After all, you are trying to master a language, that too a language which is not your native language.

THE INTEGRATED APPROACH: THE 5-F FRAMEWORK

The 'integrated approach' means that you must work on all areas concurrently—vocabulary, grammar, verbal reasoning and reading comprehension—so that the concepts in one area reinforce those in the other, and are assimilated in an integrated manner.

A language as a medium of communication works in an integrated way. Words and phrases combine to form clauses; clauses connect ideas logically together in sentences; sentences combine to form paragraphs; and paragraphs combine to form coherent passages. All the building blocks combine in an integrated way to express “meaning”.

To understand precisely what it means to be proficient in language skills, the 5-F Framework given below has been devised by delineating the five main areas of proficiency.

1. FELICITY WITH WORDS: It is the capacity for appropriate expression. It is the ability to choose the right word in the given context.

2. FAMILIARITY with the natural flow of the English idiom: It is an understanding of grammar as a vehicle for meaning.

3. FACULTY for Verbal reasoning: It is your innate or inherent ability of reasoning with ideas expressed in verbal form—in other words, your verbal intelligence.

4.  FACILITY for reading comprehension: It is an acquired effortless aptitude for precise understanding of what the author intends to say.

5. FLUENCY in the clear and logical composition of texts: It is the ability to write with clarity, conciseness and logical consistency.
