Yes, I understand that confusion, and I myself was in your same situation few years ago thinking of so many things from an MBA. Not that I'm dejected or unhappy with my decision.Just that my expectations were wrong. Got it corrected after experiencing 1st year of MBA.People jump into MBA thinking of it as shortcut to fat salary packages, cushioned seats and what not. Well all I can say is MBA is hyped and post MBA life is over hyped!! Do an MBA from top 20 B-Schools and you probably may get all that you're thinking of as of now. But otherwise, it is just these deadly & good to hear designations you get and you almost start where you stopped before MBA!! At the lowest level, with no one to "order" around (read not a manager). You end up doing Sales (your designation will be Assistant Manager!), you prepare reports, analyze data, do market research, handle client queries (designation will be Business Analyst, Associate Consultant, System Analyst etc.), sell financial instruments like insurance, mutual funds etc. (designation Wealth Manager), sell some products like automobiles (Management Trainee or Sales Executive), buy spare parts, deal with suppliers etc. (Warehouse Manager) and so it goes!!!The designations are very misleading and its better you don't go gung-ho about it or try understanding the thousands (not dozens) of designations!! Just like you are oblivious, so are many MBA grads like me. That's the whole point of these designations - HR strategy to make you feel that "Cool, I'm an Assistant Manager now!!". Just don't ask what you do day-in-day-out by being an "Assistant Manager" and everything looks fine!!! So your profile, and what you actually do from morning till evening at office, that's what matters!!In short - MBA is hyped and post MBA is over-hyped!!
That was bang on! Brutally honest! :)

@avinashkrjhaBelow is my CAT score:QA : 86.31VA : 93.08OA : 92.01Considering that I'm a B.Tech and have 33 months of work experience, do I stand a chance of getting a call form IIM Ranchi PGDHRM course?For rolling out GDPI calls, they give 75% weightage to CAT, 15% to grad discipline and 10% to work-experience(>=12 months)Thanks in anticipation
Depends on Applicant's Pool.

Sorry, But I cannot say for sure. Keep your fingers crossed. All the Best.. !!

I was reading your post and it almost jolted me out of my seat. All of us who aspire to get an MBA degree/diploma have a a very rosy picture of post-MBA life, somewhere deep down in our minds. And I, being an MBA aspirant myself am no different. As the realization dawns on me, I am forced to reconsider my decision and weigh all my options before jumping onto anything.Now, only you, seniors, are our last hope - someone who can guide us and show the true picture.I, with a not so good cat score( 90.13 percentile) am in a dilemma now and need someone to guide me. Please give your suggestions as to whether I should try for a B-school with this score or leave it for some other year. Also, which are the good colleges (besides IIMs) from where pursuing MBA would be worth it.
Zor ka jhatka zoron se hi lagna chahiye!! :)

Anyways, do not go EXACTLY by what I said. It might be biased/subjective to an extent. There are those lucky few (which I've mentioned in some of my earlier posts which you probably have not read) who do get the benefits from an MBA even if they do it from B-Schools other than the top ones. Read the "All I Wanted to Say about MBA" thread and you can see some experiences of others like @visionIIM-ACL, @abhimukh19 etc. also.

Good/Bad is subjective, but then yes if I understand your question correctly, other than IIMs (for that matter old ones), XLRI, FMS, SPJAIN, SJMSOM IIT-B, DMS IIT-D, IIFT, MDI, NITIE, SIBM-P, JBIMS are some of the others.

Honestly if you ask me, if you want all those benefits that you think of now from MBA, major one being placements, I would recommend only the IIMs and the ones listed above.

@UncouthYouth

As far as comparisons of colleges is concerned, it is not at all allowed on PG Forums.

Just a general pointer - If you have good amount of IT Work-Ex, it becomes a bit difficult to change your profile (to marketing or fin or any other). Difficult does not mean that it is not possible. But you have to give a fight for it. The same is not true for Colleges like IIM A/B/C or for that matter may be few more top colleges. Else, the story is same everywhere.

I am not much aware about your 2nd Query. @ajaygovindg Sir, Can you help him for the 2nd query that he has asked.. :)

Thank you so much for responding! Also, could you please tell me where does IMI, Delhi stand when compared to colleges like SCMHRD, Pune and NIRMA, Ahmedabad in terms of the job profiles offered, for a B.Tech(Electronics), NIT Surat with 33 months of IT work ex. I wish to join the Bharti Airtel Young Leader's Program after my MBA.Could you also please throw some light on the :a) Job responsibilitiesc) Details about the vertical in terms of growth prospectsd) Shortlisting and selection criteriafor the profile of an Account Strategist at Google?
Bhai I understand I'm partly responsible for these questions coming out now! :mg: Its good. You're targeting specific organizations - Airtel, Google, which is again good. You're focused. But don't you think that's asking too much from a B-School. They're not placement agencies to get each and every student in a batch of 60/120/240 etc. placed where each of them wants to be!!!

Better check in the placement report of the institutes and see where these companies recruit from and target only those. But then again its a risky proposition. So in an MBA one should always be open to any kind of profiles. Where you finally want to end up is your choice and that's something you have make your own moves/switches to achieve. Don't expect any institute (including IIMs) to offer everything as you want in a platter. I know people from IIMI, IIML who have left their jobs within 1st year of passing out from there!!! So your dream job is something you have to pursue for yourself and not expect some institute/degree to get you in a platter!

Sorry if that sounded rude. No such intentions for my side. :)

For the last part, I guess you'll have to speak with someone at Google itself to know what you want to know!!! How can me or @avinashkrjha or anyone else here who has not seen (as a matter of fact not heard also) what the work of an Account Strategist at Google is help you? If you're hoping that we have some contacts/alumni, then also I'll have to disappoint you. There's no one I know in Google!! :)
@jacky007

Did you check the last year's cut off for IIT's?
@avinashkrjha No idea. I want to know. Where to get it, please let me know.
IIT Roorki & Madras I am not sure, other IITs are out of my reach.
@jacky007

IIT Madras last time was 84.6.. !! I am not sure about R.

Try to convert NIT-T, FMS-BHU & MIB-MHROD. All the Best.. !!
@avinashkrjha Thankyou avinash.
@blah88 Converting MDI looks a bit tough. SP Jain includes a lot of factors in giving calls. All the best for this college 😃 You have very good academics a decent work experience. If you are a techie, then do apply at the IITs.

hi @Aman.dce

Apply to IITB, IIT KGP, IITD.you have a good chance for converting it into admission.But only thing you should be concerned before taking admission is about the placement.If Placement is quite good then it is worth taking admission or else apply to colleges having good ROIs..

Which above mentioned institutes? B-Schools as placement agencies? All B-Schools fall in that category including IIMs (although the perception & objective of doing an MBA these days is just placement)!!!
@ajaygovindg B-schools mentioned in your below statement:
