Admission FAQs for the Academic Year 2017
1. What is Master of Management?
Master of Management (M. Mgt) is a unique 24 months’ Post Graduate course
in Management, for Engineering graduates. The course is offered by the BSchool
‘Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Science’.
2. What are the specialisations offered in M. Mgt?
After the first semester of the course, students may opt for either Business
Analytics or Technology Management, as a specialised course. Even the
combination of course is available, for interested students.
3. What is the distinctive focus for the Department of Management Studies,
Indian Institute of Science?
In recent times, India is emerging as one of the global hubs of technology
intensive organizations and R&D, with the increase in entry of MNCs in the
high-tech and R&D sectors as well as rapid growth of domestic enterprises in
these sectors. Such technology based and R&D intensive industries need
executives with exposure and training in Technology Management and
Business Analytics. These executives need to have the ability to understand,
assess and forecast how technologies impact the systems within and outside the
organization (environment, economy and society at large). Similarly, formal
education in analytics will strengthen the capability of these executives to
perform robust analyses to make decisions in information and data driven
organizations. It is to meet these two distinctive needs of high-tech industries of
emerging India that our new Masters Program will focus on training the
students in Technology Management and Business Analytics. The new Masters
program will be unique in the country as it is futuristic and builds leadership in
the two important areas of Management, namely, Technology Management and
Business Analytics.
4. What are the objectives of the course?
• To enable graduate engineers to grow into competent and creative
managers of technology intensive and data driven organizations.
• To encourage entrepreneurship for high technology start-ups.
• To attract and foster doctoral students in management.
5. Are hostel and mess facilities available, in the campus? What are the charges
for the same?
Yes, hostel and mess facilities are available. If the shortlisted candidate is
willing to avail the facilities, then refundable hostel deposit* is to be paid
towards Hostel office. Additionally, some amount of hostel and mess charges is
to be paid monthly. However, accommodations shall be provided only at the
day of joining the Institute. The actual fee structure for the course, hostel and
mess charges are provided to the candidate, after receiving the admission offer.
6. Which kind of messes are available?
Kinds of messes available:
• South Indian Veg.
• North Indian Veg.
• South Indian Veg + Non-Veg.
• North Indian Veg + Non-Veg.
7. What are the summer term activities?
In the Summer Term, students will be encouraged to do internships with (i)
Public Sector as well as Private Sector R&D Organizations, and (ii) High-tech
Industries in the Corporate Sector. Alternatively, some of them will be
encouraged to get exposure to (i) Business Incubation, (ii) Venture Capital
Funds, and (iii) Successful Start-Ups. The summer term is expected to expose
students to live problems and practical aspects/ challenges of running an
enterprise. This exposure will lead to an understanding of the application
aspects of management, which the students can use in their project work.
8. What were highest, mean and median salaries offered in the year 2016?
Highest salary: ₹ 19.20 Lakh per annum.
Mean salary: ₹ 11.10 Lakh per annum.
Median salary: ₹ 11.00 Lakh per annum.
9. Can a fresher apply for the course?
Yes, freshers can also apply for the course. There’s no such minimum workexperience
criteria required to apply for the course.
10. Will part-time work-experience or internships be considered?
Part-time experience and internships are not considered as the work-experience.
However, they help the candidate for their resumes, during their personal
interviews. Entrepreneurship or family owned business is also considered as the
full time work-experience, if proper documents indicating the same are
available.
11. What is the eligibility criteria to apply for the course?
Either of the three following eligibility criteria is to be satisfied:
• CAT 2016 qualified candidates with I class B.E/ B.Tech/ equivalent.
• GATE 2015/ GATE 2016 qualified candidates with I class B.E/ B.Tech/
equivalent.
• GMAT 2016 qualified candidates with I class B.E/ B.Tech/ equivalent.
12. If applied through GMAT, do I need to send the GMAT score report, from the
GMAT authorities to the IISc, along with the recommendation letters from
professors?
No, you do not need to send GMAT score report and recommendation letters to
the IISc. Only you need to produce the original score report at the time of
Personal Interview and admission.
13. I had applied for the M. Mgt course in the past, but didn’t get selected. Can I
reapply?
Yes, anyone satisfying the eligibility criteria can apply for the course.
14. I have not completed the Engineering graduation yet. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can apply for the course. However, you need to produce a Course
Completion Certificate, issued by the university, for those who have appeared
for their final semester examinations. This certificate should state that you have
completed all the requirements for the award of the degree, including
dissertation/project report/viva voce etc. as applicable. Candidates for M. Mgt
programme should complete all the requirements for the award of their
qualifying degree including dissertation, project, viva-voce, etc. by 13th
August 2017. Till this condition is fulfilled, your admission will be treated as
provisional. However, you should produce the final Degree Certificate/ Marks
Card on or before 31st October 2017.
15. What are the documents required to be produced at the time of admission?
Hardcopies of the following are required at the time of final admission
procedure:
• GATE/CAT/GMAT Score Card
• SSLC/10th STD Mark sheet
• 12th STD Mark sheet
• Bachelor's Degree Final Semester Mark Sheet (if available)
• Degree Certificate/ Course Completion Certificate
• Caste Proof Certificate (if applicable)
• Medical Fitness Certificate
• Parent/Guardian and Student Declaration
• Undertaking by Parent and Student
• No Objection Letter and Work-experience Certificate
• Aadhaar Card for Indians and Passport for NRI’s
• State Bank/ Canara Bank Passbook.
16. Are there sectional cut-offs for CAT/GMAT/GATE? What are the overall cutoffs?
No, there are no sectional cut-offs for all the accepted entrance examinations.
Overall cut-offs keep on varying every year. The cut-offs shall be declared only
after GD-PI round. Overall cut-offs for academic years 2015 and 2016 were as

17. What are the modes of selection?
Entrance exam, Group Discussion and Personal Interview are the required
modes of selection.
18. How many shortlists would be declared for final admissions?
There would be only one shortlist declared for admissions.
19. What are the centres for Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD-PI)?
Group Discussion and Personal Interview procedures shall be held only at the
Department of Management, IISc, Bangalore.
20. What are the total number of seats available for the M. Mgt course?
There are total 15 seats available for the course.
21. Are there any quotas for NRI’s?
No, there is no such separate quota available for NRI’s. Shortlisting for GD-PI
for Indians and NRI’s are based on the score obtained in any of the three
entrance tests.
22. What are the dates for GD-PI?
Dates for the GD-PI round will be available with the candidates, only after
getting shortlisted. Generally, the GD-PI is held in the period of mid April.
23. How many days, would it take to announce the result for GD-PI?
Within a week after the GD-PI round, the shortlist would be declared officially
on the website.
24. What are the application deadlines?
Candidates can obtain an application form online with a payment of ₹900/- for
the General/OBC category and Rs.450/- for the SC/ST/PH. For details visit:

25. What is the fee structure of the course?
The fee structure keeps on varying each year. The structure shall be provided
only to the shortlisted candidates for admission. Fee structures for the academic

26. What is the course structure?
I. Hard Core Courses = 8 X 3 credits = 24 credits
II. Stream Core Courses = 4 X 3 credits = 12 credits
III. Electives = No. of courses equivalent to = 12 credits
IV. Project work = 16 credits
