Welcome aboard all!!
Congratulations for converting one of the best B-School calls..
PGPSM @ IIML: FAQ and Discussions:Given
below are excerpts from the discussions we have had so far about the
first batch of PGP-SM at IIM Lucknow. We personally had
discussions with various offices, the professors at IIML and Corporates
themselves and all of this is what they had to say:
1) Why is this course being taught at Noida Campus(10 Years old campus exclusively for executive programmes)?
Noida will give a huge location advantage. There
are a number of ministries of the Government of India and many Corporates who have approached IIML (and not the other way round) to
mentor this batch. This makes the small-ish batch size (only 45) and the campus is a
huge advantage. It will be very difficult for them to go to Lucknow campus regularly and so is the choice of campus. There will be weekly corporate and ministry
interactions, talks, discussions, and overall linkage formation. The
location will be very much advantageous for live projects and participation in B-School Competitions which is an important part of MBA Curriculum. Also there will be networking opportunities with many top institutions in the vicinity of Delhi NCR alongwith the presence of top Corporates.
2) Why has this course been started?
The programme is very much recognized globally and has wide future scope (Business Sustainability as the top agenda). There
is a huge demand for managers in various sectors of industries who
have a sustainable orientation (and education). The programme covers all the aspects of General Management alongwith added sustainability concepts. The course content is updated and inline with similar reputed programmes all over the world. The target of the
course is to make full-fledged managers *with* knowledge of how to make
their business decisions be beneficial to all stakeholders, including
the environment and society. These aspects may sometimes get overlooked
otherwise. The program aims to produce business managers who can
improve the efficiency of the business from all aspects. The industry
also realizes the importance of such managers at ever growing rate.
3) Who are the prospective employers?
All
big corporate companies, conglomerates and the verticals which may range
from Manufacturing, Automotive, Chemical, Energy, Oil and Gas, FMCG, Marketing, IT and to even E-commerce (supply chain being a huge component of these businesses and
making it sustainable being highly important), BFSI (many banks also
have sustainable divisions nowadays) have a thriving business sustainability division. There will also be emphasis laid
on policy bodies and ministries. All major and smaller consulting
companies have sustainability and energy and resource efficiency and
policy compliance as major core competencies, and they will all be
targeted. There are many MNCs looking for qualified candidates in this domain . Also regulatory bodies like World Bank, WWF, Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation, NGT etc may offer wide opportunities. We have in fact already spoken to a few companies and they
have showed a high amount of interest in the batch and course. IIM
Lucknow is a big driving factor in this and the name usually is enough. :

4) Who will handle various activities, placements and internships?
The
activities will be student driven, as is the case for all colleges,
and students will be given a free hand to form clubs and committees and
take part in live projects and business competitions. The program will
have a placement committee and all help will be provided from the
placement office and various committees at Lucknow campus as well, if need be.
5) Are there opportunities for foreign exchange programs?
Student
exchange programs are not finalized yet, but IIML is in advanced
level of talks with some prominent European universities and exchange
programs will kick into place for the 2015-2017 batch as well. Loans for
the same will be easily available when the need arises.
6)
Where else is this course being taught?
IIML is the first IIM to start
this course. In the past IIMA has been offering short term courses on
sustainability for executives. There is also speculation of IIMA
introducing this course from next year. As far as non-IIMs are concerned,
NITIE's PGDISEM is one of the best and oldest programmes which has been
running for over 10 years. TERI also has a similar course which has
been running for the past 5 years or so. MDI Gurgaon and XIMB has also inroduced SM
recently.
7) Work-ex factor?
The admission criteria for the programme(CAT 2014) has kept a minimum work-ex requirement of 2 years. It will be a great advantage with Corporates requiring experienced minds in this field. Also since IIML Noida Campus is famous for its Executive programme, there are many big companies already visiting the campus and work-ex will be a driving factor. It may offer great opportunities for lateral placements since for executive programmes the packages are ranging anything between 17-40 Lakhs. Also there will be networking opportunities for SM students with the executive students.
In all, the outlook is extremely positive and IIML has
laid the groundwork for the success of the course over the period of
the last two years in the form of linkages and planning. They have been
forming these linkages with Corporates, government and universities for
the last two years and there is an ever increasing demand from the
industry itself for managers with this knowledge and that is where the
program comes in.
