Hi All !
It is that time of the year when the PG forums are haunted by (apart from the MBA aspirant types) another kind of puys - Business School Professors from the Admission Committees!
We have one such old-timer among us back on PG - Prof Deval Kartik of the Ahmedabad-based Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA) - and she is here to answer all your questions about MICA admissions.
Much like last year, Prof Kartik would be answering all your questions related to getting an admission into MICA. So if you are crazy about this Communication Management school at Ahmedabad, you should use this opportunity to ask her your queries about MICA cutoffs, admission criteria, nature of their communication management programs, short-term courses, placements, faculty and infrastructure, etc.
How does it work?
- First go through the thread to see if a question similar to yours has already been asked and answered.
- If not, you post your questions about MICA Ahmedabad here by hitting the 'Post Reply' button on top.
- Prof Kartik, who will keep a watchful eye on this thread will answer all your queries on a regular basis.
- So once you post your question, you can come back to this thread in a couple of days to find your answer or even better, Subscribe to this thread by clicking on the 'Thread tools' link on the top-right side at the top of the thread to receive updates on your email.
Prof Kartik's PG user-ID is Admissions@MICA
So go ahead and shoot your questions :D.
Cheers!
Thanks Apurv and PG for this great initiative!!!
For all the 'wanna be', 'prospective' MICAns or just Curious Onlookers, welcome!!
Feel free to post your queries... and I will try my utmost (May lose patience sometimes!!) to answer all of them..
As wisely advised by Apurv, do go thru previous posts to ensure that the query is not being repeated. Do some homework (like go thru MICA website) and yet, post the query...
Here's to 'many happy postings and replies'....
Cheers
Deval

Hi,
MICA's focus is in Communications Management and in a business set up, communications and its management are sub-set of marketing. Thus the focus on Marketing at MICA is much higher than B schools where the focus is all aspects of business such as Finance, HR, systems, production and marketing. MICA has several courses in Marketing and Communcations than any other B school.
Work ex is useful but not a must. We have about 60% freshers as any good course requires a balance of work-ex and freshers to bring different perspectives to learning!

Hi Deval madam,
How are you doing? Thanks for taking out time to answer our queries.
The mica website says that GMAT score CAN be accepted in lieu of CAT. Does it mean that if I submit both the scores, the CAT score will be given preference. My gmat score is 700 and i am taking CAT on 16th nov 2008. If preference is given to CAT score, then will it be wise to submit the CAT score, or I should just submit both the scores.

Hey,
That's a cool GMAT score. MICA gives preference to the 'better of the two' scores. So go ahead, take CAT and submit both scores. You have nothinbg to lose!

Hi Deval Ma'm
Thanks a ton for solving our queries related to MICA:happy:.Ive jus passed out of college and a cat08 aspirant who insanely wants to get into MICA as communication is my forte and MICA provides the best course in Communication. However i wanted to know if Mica has some other eligibilty criterian apart from cat scores and if cat is the only criteria then how much of a minimum percentile makes one eligible to write MICAT.Does previous academic background and extra curricular activities count to get a call??well ol this only coz am nt too confident o my cat scores being super good THIS TYM since i jus started out.In that case takin wt sort of work ex would help me if i target cat09...a media house or some other industry experience..

hi deval mam,
We are very grateful to you for solving our queries regarding MICA. I wanted to know how differently do we have to prepare for MICA's GD and PI. I know its very early to ask about it but as everybody knows well begun is half done. I wanted to concentrate on every aspect of a B-school from now itself. Do they generally ask about media and advertising or are they open to any sort of questions just like other B-schools?
Thank you in advance mam.

Saumya

Hello Ma'am,
I had a query. I heard from some friends that there are a lot of companies which come to MICA with corporate communication profile and not marketing profile.I have 20 months work experience in a reputed company. From my experience and from the experience of my seniors across industries, I gather that a corp comm profile does not require a MBA as there is no/little strategic thinking involved. Also, there is nill growth.
Can you please clarify, as to if we seriously do get such profiles in MICA as I havent heard such profiles being offered in any other school focussing on marketing.
Thanks a lot.
Naval.
Hello Madam,
It's great to have you here with us.I am planning to apply to MICA through my GMAT score, but in the GMAT website, there is no option of sending scores to MICA.
Does this mean that we will be given calls for MICAT based on the GMAT scores we have mentioned in the form or there is something else that needs to be done?
Regards,
Vishwa
Hi Deval Ma'm
Welcome back!
Nice to have you back again.
hey hi there. i dont know if this is the right place to ask this question or not?
i just went thru the official website of mica. its mentioned tht in the 3rd stage there is group exercises. can somebody give a little example of group exercises which have been conducted before?
hello ma'm
i am an engineering undergraduate in computer science. I want to pursue a career that gives ample scope for creativity and at the same time financial security.I just came to know about MICA and decided that its right place to be. Though i am confident and hopefull of making it,but since i have average marks in my graduation i am very much concerned and confused about how much weightage do the graduation marks carry in the admission process .
i would be grateful if you you help me with this query. Are the graduation marks considered to be a principle parameter for judging the potential of a candidate and may play a decisive role in selection?
i dont have much extra curricular certificates either but i have enrolled for diploma in creative writing in english from IGNOU .would that add to my candidature?
In MICA's GE, you're expected to arrive at one, for example, last year my group's GE was choose 5 colours individually and then together with your group decide upon 3 colours that the Earth will be made up of.
Here, together with knowledge, your ability to work in a team is also tested and I think it makes a lot more sense than other school's GDs.
hello Madam.
How does one prepare for MICAT. what is the right approach?
Also can you please give me a some information about group projects and exercises
Hi Ma'am,
I have close to 3 years of work-ex in IT (SAP Domain). However my interest lies in Advertising, Communications etc.
I came to know about the 1 year Executive PG program in Communications management from MICA for people with work-ex. I'm really interested in this program.
- I would like to know what is the kind of placements/profiles one can expect after this course.
- MICA website says one should need atleast 3 years of work-ex for applying. Should this work-ex be in a similar field like Marketing or Communications? Since I'm from IT background, will it be a disadvantage for me?

Hello,
I'm very happy to see this thread.
I am one of the many keen MICA aspirants and my doubt pertains to GMAT and its acceptance.
Due to professional reasons,i'm not able to write the exam this year,i'll be taking it mostly around Jan end. however the last date for MICA form submission is Jan 20th. is it possible for me to apply without the score and send in the score later.?
Do reply as soon as possible,as I have to decide on a suitable date for the test based on your response.
Thank you so much
Janani
