Congrats on your call buddy. As regards something being wrong with XLRI........well nothing more than a botched up SQL query.......otherwise they are still as good as they alwayz were.

Hey poddar which printout u r talking about

hey grenade
the printout im talking abt is the one which we were supposed to take out of the application form which we filled online
wht is written in ur program?
"general management" or "bm"?
Exactly. I'm a case in point. My overall percentile is 99.88th, with Maths/GK/English 92.2/99.22/99.88. And no call.

Clearly, XL wants quant gurus, but is there method in this madness? They decided to impose a cutoff of 95 on quant. So far, so good. But does this mean they totally ignore other parameters? Their reasoning is understandable if it had been a XAT of the old pattern, with sectional time limits, so that a person who gets 98th percentile in Quant is better than a guy who gets 92nd, coz both of them got 40 minutes to do it. But this time, there were no sectional limits, and far from being a criteria of competence, a high quant score may just mean that the person decided to spend some more time on quant as compared to the other sections. Had I spent 5 minutes less in English and given that to quant, I would've got the call. IIMs generally consider this aspect; I know a guy who's got 99.99 in each of Maths & English, but only 70 in DI, and has a call from Ahmedabad. IMHO, XL is using last year's criteria to judge this year's performances.

XAT had a very well-written passage on Generalists vs Too-Specialized Managers. This was clearly an allegory to developing holistic, emotionally sensitive managers, which XL claims it does, as against extremely specialized courses that are being offered by the 'modern', rapidly advancing B Schools. I really admired that passage, and the XL prof who'd chosen that to be included in XAT. In effect, they were saying, "We still focus on fundamentals, we don't get blown away by unproven modernist sentiment." But this year's call scene really turns this proposition on its head.

I've got many other calls, and don't really feel bitter, but being called from XL would surely have felt good.

This is not to deride XL in any way, I respect the insti, and honestly consider XAT to be better than CAT on many counts; but I don't really see the logic of the way they've sent out calls this year.
And I'm not feeling as somber as the tone of this post is. I'm quite perky in fact (Reading an Asterix ) But this does seem very arbitrary.

OOh excellent post. I'd expect no less from someone named after an elf-lord mind you.

So much for having balanced skills. With QA cut-offs at 95+ I wonder if I should bother trying next year if it comes to that.

guess i am a bit late here but anyway i got a call for pm&ir.;
i guess it is hard luck for those with very high %iles who didnt make it(gross understatement).

help needed for the pi.

any way heres the score card.

my acads btw arent gud(67-6 and i am in my final yr of engg.(not much of a profile, maybe my essay was good) one never knows.

hi.. guys.. i am thinking of applying to AMITY for mass com.. any idea how is it and know any other institutes of mass comm.. any help will be great...

I know its a little late in the day to ask this...but I feel I might just sneak in.

the story so far

99.87 overall, 99.8 va, 99.52 ga, 94 qa and no xlri call

I'd thought that quant did me in....but then read a mail on pg wherein a candidate with similar high perc had no call last year. the guy called up the xl people and clarified things and was given a call. well I tried doing that, but it seems the people in the admissions office can't do much.

I'd resigned to my fate when my time centre head told me of someone with 93 in qa and lesser perc than mine in every other section and a call. now if I call up at the admissions office, I'll be put across the same people whom I'd talked to last time.

can someone from XLRI step in let me know that pursuing it any further would be beneficial? and if it would be, please give me the contact number of the right person.

honestly , I feel cheated now that someone with a lesser perc than mine in quant has a call. though there are other things like perc in other sections, work ex, acads...well I have all of them going well for me.

please pour in any info if you it think would help me...

And to say that luck didnot play a major part in this is an understatement of the century......somebody who ruled out luck listening.....

Falling short of words to sympathise with u buds....yes....there are so many here who feeling the same....a percentile diff in QA just screwed ur chances...and there are some who are trying to justify it....infact now i remember one thing...majority of manager that we come across try to justify the wrong as right....and thats what is happening on this thread...as well...  there is one more person (I think gwaihir) who got 99's in 2 section and 92 in the dreaded QA and he also suffers the same fate....now we just want to know what sections are they going to skip next year so that we donot waste our time there....and do the section which they will consider....
The statement on their paper that maximise marks in all sections became a waste of a statement....

Atleast IIM's are little better than xlri...they atleast consider 2 sections inspite of having a poor 3rd section....

did these people get a call despite of a poor overall percentile???

no offences meant...just a sarcastic, harmless comment

Sometimes yes sometimes no....but if i come across a manager who comes frm xl from 2007 batch than probably i wud think that way....just kidding...no infact people who got calls are little bit more lucky than lot of others who didnot get calls...so my respect for them is still gonna be same and not less...

And poor %iles...yes some did get calls because of poor %iles in 2 sections (which incidentally doesnot include QA's).

can someone give the email address for the admissions office at xlri?
there's no such address on the xl site...if there is I cudn't find it.
and its not there even on the help link on the admissions page.
thanks in advence...

Spaceman_spiff, your case is even more cranky than mine; your ga & quant score being higher. Quant, in fact, is just 1 below the ruthless cutoff that XL has set this year. Suppose you try posting a comment at their blog? xlri.blogspot.com
But I suppose a blog isn't the right place for this sort of question, and they'll probably be angry if you do that. Your call. All instis say anyway that the admission process is final and can't be questioned blablabla.

...Therez an important difference between a Manager and a clerk after all, and the answer lies in Verbal ability rather than Quant.

Very well put!

Actually, Gwaihir the Windlord is the king of the eagles in Lord of the Rings. So he's an eagle-lord, not elf.
Glad that you liked my post. Now, if only you worked in XL's admissions office...

Hi frenz.... i have got a call from xlri and am really anxious abt PI, have heard that its 30 - 45 min session....
could anybody suggest me URL where i cud find last year xlri PI experiences..

i got a call for pmir.....and was really surprised...my scores were
qa - 95.4x
va- 84.xx
ga - 93.xx
oa - 96.04

i guess mine is on teh lower end of the spectrum...

anyway....reading all teh threads before this .... the only thing that can be concluded is that the essays played a huge part in teh selection process.....i dont remember much what i wrote .. but i am quite sure i didnt pull off an arundhati roy...

must have been the essays....

Right you are. The Windlord. I had him confused with Gwindor, the elf of Nargothorond.

If I worked in XL's admission office I'd apply the VA cutoff at 95+ 😉 and this thread would read much the same except the posters complaining would be the ones celebrating right now .

Sorry mate......but thatz unlikely.......no point convincing yourself that your essay or the ones of the guyz who got the call was any better than the ones who dint get a call. The simple reason you got a call is that you have a 95+ percentile in Quant and a decent overall percentile. As for essays, your idea seems logically defunct because most of the high percentilers who got chucked out have high verbal percentile. So the chances of them having written better essays than guyz with low verbal percentile is pretty high. Case in point -> yours truly, 99.77 overall and a 99.92 in Verbal, and the essay was very well written as well.

So enjoy your call and feel happy that you were lucky enuf to gave met the 95+ cut off in Quant......that was the only criteria XLRI looked for this year.
it does sound weird...no dbt.. but the fact remains tht they hv selected ppl based on Quant ( which did hv sm logic based Qs also)

n this trend i hv observed in quite sm institutes not only in India but also in US n co... tht they focus more on ur QA and Logic than ur Verbal.. which needs to be a bare minimum

They mite hv decided on a similar pattern this yr

Looking @ so much confusion on calls, I 2 want to throw my hat:)

Essays might have been considered!

There's no way 2 know whethet it's true or not Since no %le ia ther for it

XIMB seems 2 B streight forward! Thanks 2 their reservation quota etc. Very high %le was req.d for the people not under quota!
