Indian mythologies,and religious scriptures portray women as gods and extra-ordinary creation of nature, but in reality we fail to acknowledge them as fellow human beings with expectations, desires and rights. The decreasing girl child sex ratio from 927 to 919 in 2011 census, low enrollment ratio in school, high maternal mortality rate, increasing crime rate against women are some indicators of women's plight in the nation today.
Women empowerment is basically improving the social, economic, political, educational and legal domain of women to pursue their own goals and satisfy their own needs in life independently. Education and financial independence through employment can be the best initiatives to start with. But regressive patriarchal mindset of society, dowry system, female foeticide are some extreme challenges in achieving their empowerment.
The government has taken enormous efforts like banning sex determination during pregnancy and schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Women Helpline, concession on interest rates for loans to improve the status of women. Also reservation quota in local administration elections of Panchayat and Municipal election and reservations in employement have provided a conducive environment for their political and financial empowerment. But still, Delhi Nirbhaya rape case and Bangalore harassment on new year eve 2017 in the well developed urban cities, vindicates that education and employement are not the only imperatives for women empowerment but a radical change in the value system of our society.
Ambedkar said, “I measure the progress of a community, by the progress women have achieved ”. So the true potential of a society can be realised only when we empower the other half significantly.
