Cyber crime is a criminal activity involving broadly the use of a computer, an electronic device or the internet or a combination of them to steal data, identity or trade secrets - or even for pure mischief.
Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in), formed in 2004 under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is the nodal agency responsible for addressing cyber crime incidents in India. The Information Technology Act (2000) is the maiden law to deal with cyber crime, further strengthened by an amendment in 2008.
According to a joint study by Assocham and PwC, India has witnessed a 350% rise in cyber crime between 2011 and 2014, averaging about 45,000 incidents annually. Cause for these can be banal such as using a weak password, revealing excessive personal information on social media or opening harmless-looking email attachments, to more complicated such as using outdated software, employing insecure practices, not using encryption or falling prey to Man-In-The-Middle attacks.
In India, Congress' and Rahul Gandhi's Twitter accounts were hacked in December 2016 and abusive updates were posted, while in San Francisco, the public transit system was held to ransom, forcing the authorities to make all rides free of cost for a day. Nothing should be considered secure by default, as only a personal investment in security makes it so.
With the push for a Digital India - faceless, paperless, and cashless - cyber security is of prime importance to the country. Not just individuals, businesses and governments too need to secure themselves from crippling threats. Common best practices should be spread and made the baseline in all public offices as well as households.

UP is done. But its cascading effect will be evident in gaining the majority in the Rajya Sabha. No more bill will be stalled in this upper house of the parliament. Over the years the NDA govt. had to negotiate with the opportunistic parties like TMC in order to pass a bill in the Rajya Sabha. But with the rise of BJP to power in UP, the era of appeasing parties like TMC is gone. Now BJP will go after TMC in Bengal with all its might.
