Safety of women in India (topic provided by someone earlier in the day, just tried to write something, please provide your suggestions/feedback for improvement)
In 21st century, though wsomen are almost at par with men in every field, incidents of violence against women have been widely prevalent in India.
Cases of rape and molestation appear regualrly in newspaper. In most of the cases women are either killed or grievously injured after the assualt and threatened with dire consequences if they dare to speak up or report the incident to police. Many girls/women become victim of acid attack/ murder from their dejected lovers.
Incidents of child and women trafficking are rampant. Many girls from rural regions who migrate to cities in search of job and shelter are lured into prostitution and other illegal activities.
Women are in danger even inside their home. There have been cases of domestic violence where house wives are tortured physically or emotionally for various reasons by husbands or inlaws mainly for dowry, inability to give birth to male child etc.
India also bears very poor sex ratio as girls are considered as a burden on the family. They are either killed when in the womb or once they are given birth.
The above statements sum up how women are unsafe in India. The problem is deep - rooted in the society and how it percieves women. Inorder to fortify safety for women the mentatlity of society towards women needs to be changed. Crimes against women like rape mailnly goes unreported due to fear of shame. Its time people overcame shame and embarrassment and report the crimes to police. Besides, women should be trained to defend themselves from attacks. These will help in lessening crimes against women to a great aextent. In addition laws should be made to dole out exmplary punishment to the offenders of crime against women so as to wane repetition of such crimes in future.
