Hello everyone,

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Sarang Bargale and I was an SBI PO aspirant till last year. I secured 63.38 marks out of 100 in the final result declared by SBI and was allotted bhopal circle. I prepared for SBI PO exam along with MBA entrance exams. I also have an offer from Indian Institute of Foreign Trade(IIFT), New Delhi for admission in MBA, therefore I have decided not to join SBI and go for MBA at IIFT.

I am here to share my exam strategy with all of you, which you may find useful in the coming times.

For prelims, the most important factor will be speed. The level of questions is not high and if you are thorough with the basics, it should be an easy paper to solve. IMO, English section is the most scoring one and the quickest to solve, followed by Quants and reasoning. Quants is all about speed. The level is not that high and with high speed, one can easily visit all the questions. Reasoning sets may take some time to solve but with a little patience, you can definitely solve them. The basic study material given by coaching institutes along with test series are sufficient to give you enough practice for prelims. For speed calculations, you can solve the speed maths section of Quants book for CAT by Arun Sharma. My take-Try to score at least double-digit marks in your weakest section and maximise your score in other sections. I used to score around 55-60 in mocks and finally scored 62 in the real exam. If you are scoring more than 50 in the mock tests, you are in the safe zone.

This time, SBI has changed the mains exam pattern. They have introduced sectional time limits and reduced the no. of questions. My take-they are trying to align the exam with MBA entrance exams like CAT,NMAT,CMAT etc. This may result in slight increase in level of questions. Last year, I found reasoning section to be the most challenging and was in line with MBA exams, followed by quants. I expect them to keep the trend same this time and further increase the level, also because the number of questions have been reduced. IMO, one should visit the study material for MBA exams along with the material given by bank coaching institutes, especially for these two sections. The quants section will once again demand high-speed calculations along with grip on the concepts because the level will be more compared to the prelims exam. The remaining sections, GK and English are high scoring. For GK, one should be thorough with the GK and computer capsule released a few days before exam by BA. Most of the questions are asked from that capsule. Emphasis should also be given on the news paper headlines. The passages in English section are easy to read and with accuracy, you can maximise your score in this section. Keep all the grammar rules handy as there are many easy questions to solve if you know the rules. Good reading habits are must and will help you in the GDPI stage as well. I used to score 95-100 in the mock tests and scored 110 in the real exam. If you are scoring more than 90, you are in the safe zone.

The descriptive section will contain an essay and a letter writing exercise. Many think that it is an easy section and they don't require any practice for that. I was one of them. However, take my advice- it is not easy to think and write under exam pressure, especially when you have not practiced. I only scored 21 marks in the descriptive section and managed to clear the cut-off by one mark! So, practice before hand and treat this section equal to others. There are websites where you will find common topics for essay and letter writing. Show your written work to your friends and teachers and improve your writing skills. Do not underestimate this section and try to maximise your score.

Lastly, have faith in your preparation. If you are well prepared, however hard the paper may be, you will be able to tackle it. Mock drills are very important. Solve papers of varying difficulty levels and analyse your mistakes. Don't lose hope if you are scoring low in mocks. The mocks are designed to be slightly tougher than the actual exam, and with enough practice, you should be able to sail through.

Once the mains results are out, I will post tips and tricks to ace the GDPI round. Until then, keep practicing and ace the exam. ALL THE BEST!!
