What I am about to write might draw some prejudiced comments ,so let me make it clear beforehand clear that I am a general category student who has been socioeconomically privileged right from my childhood. Now Having said that,I still think that India needs caste based reservation because even after 68 years of independence the ghost of Manu smriti still haunts India. According to a study by Sukhdeo Thorat and Paul Attwell from Indian Institute of Dalit studies over 33% of the resumes with Dalit names are straightway rejected only on the basis of names by Indian Private sector.

please refer the above link for detailed study. secondaly Intercaste marriage is one of the most important instrument through which there is possibility of moving up the caste heirarchy. but there also the stats are dismal. over 90% population follows caste marriage only. I come from a small village in Bihar where I see a large divide between we the upper caste and the different dalits.While we from childhood itself get all the luxuries of life and forget luxuries even an economically weaker upper caste hindu is more likely to get admitted to a private school than an economically sound dalit student. And there are over 6 lac villages in India so you can extrapolate the stats. I want to put up a question to people who think reservation should be quashed. Why do we see all the low paid jobs like rickshaw pulling, daily labourers street hawkers are being done by only low caste people. you might retort that they are not capable. But then lets rewind our lives back to school days. Majority of people on pg have done their schooling from good schools . How many students do you see in your classes from lower caste section. If you search for the stats you will be startled to know the enrollment ration in good private schols is less than 5 %.

And framers of constitution provided reservation to end the discrimination which still persists and its we uppercastes who practice that. Now its not that only upper caste are responsible for this. There is a class divide even in SC/STs. There are certain castes who have benifitted from the reservation policies and they are not letting the other people from SC or ST to take benifit. So there is a need to reform the composition of castes getting reservation. But reservation as a whole should not be quashed in near future.
