Rickshaw is a very common transportation in India and many other emerging markets. They being very small and nimble, they can go through smallest of the roads. Rickshaw drivers in general are very versatile about traffic challenges and know all the shortcuts. In India, they get paid on distance and they try to optimize the time as much as possible so that they can run more customers.
In the last one-year or so, I am starting to see that Bangalore roads are becoming very congested and peak hour range is getting bigger. In addition, time taken to get from home to office is highly unpredictable and it varies based on the day of the week. For example, Mondays are the worst, at least 90 min. Friday's are the best and I can get to office in 45 min. In addition, Google map is pretty much useless as all roads are shown in 10 variations of the red color and pretty much main roads look like blood arteries in a medical diagram that shows human blood vessels.
I have been optimizing my own way of dealing with the traffic challenges. I bought a smallest/easiest/safe car (unheard of a VC driving such cars in India, but, I care about my time than the car I drive). It is extremely easy to drive (automatic), easy to park (less than 3.6mtrs in length), great turning radius (required for India), and great safety in terms of airbags, etc. This car gets me at least 15% improvement in time compared to expensive cars. The primary reason is that the expensive cars are bigger, very wide and you are afraid to squeeze through small roads due to potential brushing with other ongoing vehicles. No one likes small dents on their expensive cars!!
Even with my small car, I was starting to see that my time to get to office is continuously increasing. I was starting to miss my appointments with founders, who would have travelled distances to come on time. One thing that is not acceptable at our office is keeping founders waiting.
Last week, I thought, why not try a new trick. I left my car at home, gave my driver a day-off and took a Rickshaw to office. I spoke to Rickshaw guy in local language (Kannada) and made a "surge-price" style offer of 3x the actual meter cost if he can get me to office within 45 minutes.
Most of the Indians think of Rickshaw drivers as "not smart", but, I happen to know that they are really smart about their business. He looked at me, and within few seconds he had qualified me as a "techie" and concluded that I can be trusted with 3x offer. He wanted to know where I am going and quickly got into a trance of how he would take me within 45 min to the destination. He knew that he has to optimize on "time" and not on "distance". After a minute or two, he asked me to get-in for a ride.
I must say, this was the best experience I had in the last couple of months about driving in Bangalore. The driver knew exactly how to avoid every traffic signal and go in the direction of the fast moving vehicles. At least in two occasions, he was going in opposite direction to my office, just to join back the main road from a side road, where, he would increase his odds of getting a "green" signal at the traffic sign. He took me through the roads that I had never gone before. He was criss-crossing the roads to avoid all 4-way crossings as those are notorious for traffic jams. At 4-way crossings in India most of the drivers operate on "greedy algorithm", where, if you get a inch, you take it, resulting in massive grid-lock of vehicles in all directions. The driver's answer was to avoid all such crossings. I thought he lost the plot many times, but, to my surprise, he was optimizing and recalculating his route in real-time.
The driver took me to the office in 37 minutes. I gladly gave him 3x the money. He thought I am really not a savvy person for paying him 3x. He asked me whether I would need a Rickshaw every day and he would wait for me near my house for the same deal!!!
Now, I take the same roads that the driver showed me on a daily basis and I am saving at least 25 min per day. Awesome ROI from investment to time savings based on value of my time. I hope I can do the same on the job!!
