in first que cube has equal sides so how did u calculate the value of 'a'...since all sides have different values

@katvond said: @challenger90
1) let the length, breadth and height of the cube be 1,1,1 units. which gives a surface area of 6 units.
now,the new l,b,h will be .95, .95 ,1.2. which gives a surface area of 6.365 units.
hence surface area is increased by .365/6 = 6.083%
2) let amount with A = x
then amount with B = 1200-x
A spends 12% of his money that means he has 88% of his share left.
Similarly B, after spending 20% of his money has 80% of his share left.
So,
.88(x) + .80(1200-x) = 85% of 1200
solve the equation and you will obtain the value of x as 750. this was the initial amount with A. so amount left will be 88% of 750 = Rs. 660
Hope this helps!!

ya i got it..thanx a lot:)

See when u perform the given operations in questions, the Cube will be modified into a form of Cuboid. In Cube we have L=B=H. Let it be as 10. Therefore its Surface Area will be 6(a)^2=600. Now when u performed the given operations, the dimensions now will be L=9.5 ,B=9.5 and H=12. Now it transformed into a Cuboid. Try to Imagine the operations in mind, u will get it transformed into a Cuboid(Match Box like). Now the Surface Area of Cuboid is A= 2{(l*b)+(l*h)+(h*b)} =636.25 which is 6.04% more than 600.The Answer to the B question is Let A having x money, then B=1200-x . Acc. to question, .88x + .80(120-x)=.85*1200 and we get x=750. Money Remaining=.88*750=Rs660I hope u get it

Please check the question.
It should be "30% derarer than C" and not "50% dearer than C"..
30% dearer makes the ans. 46.15%.

ohh sry sry..it;s 30% dearer than C..
but i couldn't get how u calculated C's value..why u decreased 150 to 100 again..

@[606813:sahilKM]
i dnt knw the answers..answers are not given..
but plz tell me the approach that u have used

@[593895:challenger90]

See, A is 50% dearer than C.
A = 1.5 C
now we have to calculate by how much is C cheaper than A.
so, (1.5C - C)/1.5C * 100 = 1/3 * 100 = 33.33 %
its inverse proportion.
50% increase corresponds to 33.33 % decrease.

try to solve this,
If A is 20% more than B, then by how much B is less than A??

A motorist leaves the post office to go to the airport to collect mail. The plane arrives early, and the mail is sent on a horse cart. After half an hour the motorist meets the horse cart, collects the mail and returns to the post office, thus saving 20 minutes. How many minutes early did the plane arrive?
a) 20 b) 25 c) 30 d) 40
also give the approach !!

NOt sure though

@[553041:mankit] My take is 20 mins.

He saved 20 mins overall; that means 10 mins on 1 way journey.

Thus considering both motorist and cart travelled at same speed, the planes must arrive 20 mins before schedule

Let me try to explain..

Let us suppose that the plane will arrive at 6:00 pm,
so the time when the motorcyclist met the cart was 5:50 (since he saved 20 mins both sides therefore 10 mins one side)

Now at 5:50 the cart had already traveled for 30 mins, therefore the cart must have left the airport at 5:20.
Which means that the plan must have landed at 5:20.
i.e 40 mins before actual time.

ANOTHER APPROACH..

The cart traveled for 30 mins before meeting the motorcyclist.
Let us suppose that the plane arrived, but the cart waited for the motorcyclist to arrive at the airport only..
So the cart should wait for 30 mins + 10 more mins for the motorcyclist to reach airport.
So the cart or the plane waited for 40 mins for the motorcyclist i.e the plane landed 40 mins early.

@[525695:Sazid], their speed cannot be same as the motorcyclist will take 10 mins to cover the distance which the cart covered in 30 mins..

@[607979:AvishekAdhvaryu]hey can you please explain the method???
