WAT TOPIC: Lack of novelty/creativity in
Bollywood movies of today. Why? How?
Couldn't have been a better topic for a moviebuff like me! Was expecting
some serious topics like Syria, Ukraine, Palestine, whatever. I hadn't read a
newspaper in months – except a few brief glances, nor watched any TV news
programmes [Arnab Goswami doesn't count, that's an entertainment soap opera]. So this was a blessing in disguise for me.
30 minutes 300 words, ample time. Thought I wrote a very good essay. Aced it here. Gave plenty of examples and explained it very well, and ended on the perfect note.
Confidence level = 9/10
Interview:
Panelist to the Left, L: Smiled whenever you looked him in the eye; kind, amiable South Indian.
Panelist in the middle, M: Looked like he meant business, but was encouraging and helpful. Looked like a faculty from the institute.
Panelist to the Right, R: Looked uncomfortable, indifferent, as if he didn't want to be there, no acknowledgement when I wished him, no nodding head when I was speaking to him, just a blank faced look, think Katrina Kaif.
*Here I enter*
Me: Good Afternoon, sir (looking at L), Good Afternoon, sir (looking at M), Good Afternoon, sir (looking at R). Think I overdid it here.
L: Good Afternoon 😃
M: Hi, come in.
R: -__- (He was wearing a t-shirt and a cap in the interview, because dress code obviously applies only to the interviewees.)
M: Please have a seat. I sit down. So tell me about yourself?
Uh.. didn't exactly know where to start because the interview form was so exhaustive it covered pretty much everything, was thinking of saying something which was not on the form. 5 seconds already got over with my just sitting there like a dumb doll.
M: What happened?
Me: I'm sorry, sir. Was thinking what to say.
M: It is the most basic question of any interview. How can you not be able to answer that?
Confidence level: 3/10
Me: Well sir, the form already covers so much, was wondering what else to say.
L: Even if you say something which is there in the form, no problem with that.
M: Talk about your personality. What you could not tell us through the form.
Me: Blah Blah Blah.
R: Why are your grades in your last semester low? I had a couple of Ds there. The rest of my grades were mostly A or B+, so obviously it stood out.
Me: Sir, we were told these subjects would not count in the end, so did not pay attention. Actually thought of making up a lie that I was not well, but then thought to myself, hell, I got nothing to lose here. So told the absolute truth.
L: So you only study for marks?
Me: No sir, there are some subjects I love. I would passionately study them even if there is no exam in that subject.
L: Okay then, suppose the first subject of your MBA is uninteresting, would it mean you will abandon it too?
Me: Absolutely no, sir. There were quite a few subjects during my Engineering that I wasn't fond of, yet I worked hard and scored As in them. It was just that in the last semester, those two subjects were uninteresting to me, plus they said the marks did not count in the final result, hence I ignored them.
M: Fine.
Confidence level: 5/10
M: So you are passionate about management? Can you explain that?
Me: Sir, ever since IIIrd grade..... more blah. And then Engineering... more blah... And then work... more blah.
Some debate about leadership here. But at the end he says, "I agree with you"..
L: What is your role (at work) like? Your responsibilities?
Me: I do this, I do that.
M: Give one solid reason to show you are passionate about management.
Me: Sir, I joined this company as a software engineer, I was doing well there, got appraisals and appreciation and stuff. But I always knew I had the keeda in me (yes I said that word, couldn't risk pausing for 5 seconds again for the same word in English) to be in management. So I got in touch with my HR, and asked them to change my role. They advised against it saying my one year of experience in projects would go waste and I would have to start from the scratch because the new role is a functional role. Despite that, I took the risk, and 5 months later, I can say with confidence that I was not wrong in my decision.
Confidence level: 7/10
L: Smiles. M: Somewhat satisfied R: -__-
L: So what shows do you watch on Television? I mean the Business shows.
Me: Sir, I don't watch much of TV, do not get enough time.
L: You say you are passionate about business?
Me: Yes sir, my job takes up a lot of my time. Have to do long hours a lot of times.
L: But yours is a functional role, right? How can someone who facilitates activities work long hours?
Me: Actually sir, that is just one facet. There are a host of other things as well. I work with several data analytics tools, there are several audits happening, presentations, arranging training, consulting, connecting with different stakeholders...
L: Hmm.. okay. Semi-convinced look
M (to R): You want to ask something?
R: Oh, okay -__- Listen there is a highway, a small road which crosses it from the other end (kind of like a T junction, with the _ in T being the highway). That area is prone to a lot of accidents. How would you suggest to stop it?
Me: Gave some answers, he said there is a better answer. And they moved on. One of the answers I mentioned was building a bridge or underbridge in the worst case. He said that is too much of an investment. I retorted, saying nothing is too much when it is the question of another life. He was speechless. Didn't utter a word, other panelists took over. Either I impressed him a lot or annoyed him too much.
Confidence level: 5/10
M: Ok, how many rivers are there in Punjab?
Me: Huhhh. o_O Totally caught me off guard. Sorry sir, I don't know.
M: 5 or 6?
Me: What? Didn't get it then but he was actually giving a hint here, Punjab = Panj (Five) + ab (water) = Land of five rivers. Had read in school. Honestly couldnt recall. No idea sir.
M: At least try naming them.
Me: Indus? Sutlej? Ganges?
M: ...
Me: Sorry sir, I cannot recall. I am just guessing. (All the five rivers are tributaries of the Indus river, Sutlej being one of them. Ganges was out of question)
Confidence level: 2/10
M: Ok fine, where is Chattisgarh?
Me: Told
M: What about Jharkhand?
Me: Told
M: Who is the CM of West Bengal?
Me: Mamta Banerjee, sir
M: Which party does she belong to?
Me: CPM? Wait.. no! It's at the tip of my tongue. Yes. Trinamul Congress. LOL.
Confidence level: 7/10
M: Who is the defence minister of India?
Me: Arun Jaitley?
M: What?
Me: Sir, when he was sworn into power, he was given both the portfolios of defence and finance. There was a talk that the defence ministry will be given to someone else later. I am not sure if that happened, and if it happened, I do not know who it was. (I was right, Arun Jaitley is still the Defence minister, only got to know later)
Confidence level: 5/10
L: What are your other calls?
Me: Sir, one call. IIM Ranchi.
L: What was the result?
Me: Not selected, sir.
M: Just one call for your score? You did not apply anywhere else? There are other good institutes like MDI, SP Jain…
Me: Sir, I did not apply anywhere else because I was honestly not expecting the score. I had not prepared for CAT last year.
M: Hmm.. what if you don't get selected here also?
Me: Sir, I already have a backup plan. CAT is about 3 months away. I have already kickstarted my preparation. Scoring well in AIMCATs too. So that's a good sign.
M: What are AIMCATs?
Me: Sir, it is a mock CAT conducted by TIME, one of the premier coaching centres in the country.
L: How are you scoring in these AIMCATs?
Me: Pretty well, sir. Have been able to maintain 95+ throughout. More than the actual score, I take the consistency as a good sign.
M: Great! Good luck to you. I think we are done. Thank you very much!
Me: Thank you for your time, sir. It was a pleasure. Have a good day!

I don't know what to make of this interview. I was being as honest as was possible from my side. I thought I floundered at some basic level questions like "Tell me about yourself" and "How many rivers in Punjab". Also that logic based question, I was disappointed I couldn't do well there. But even when I think of an answer now, I cannot come up with a better answer. Guess I did my best. I did admit in the midst of the interview that I was feeling slightly under pressure, that was a mistake from my end. I was playing cool, but again some nervousness showed. Nevertheless, it was a good experience.
How many attented WAT/PI finally??
Guys I have collated the data in the attached Google Sheet. Please fill up your respective slot data. It will help us to predict our chances to some extent.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yCbqWNKZhUGOO5dh_6LqeE4ZgGALA3eGoezpLNK6fko/edit?usp=sharing
if any girl would have given the WAT/PI then 100 % chances for her... since they would like to maintain gender diversity...;)
What are the revised dates for WAT/PI process completion ?
When the final result is about to be out ?
how many of those present here are willing to join IIM Indore mumbai campus if selected??? this is required to estimate the waitlist...
Has anyone received the mail yet?
Any idea at what time the results could be declared?!
So we are few hours away from result.I have no hope of getting selected but neither I had of getting this call. However I did get that call.So whatever the decision may be we should wholeheartedly accept that.Because in either ways we have to put the same amount of hard work. The years lying ahead without an IIM are as challenging as the years lying ahead with an IIM. It's just the perspective with which we see this. But one thing is for sure.We all will get to our dreams and goals if we continue to believe in them with patience, persistence and perspiration. So all the best to all you guys here and may the best and the deserved gets selected!!
😃For working professionals, is it mandatory to provide relieving order from the company as a proof of work-exp while accepting final admission offer?
Can they provide Assignment Letter/ Appointment Letter/ Payslips for the time being and provide relieving after 2 months or so ?
