Tina, NM has not released ne specific guidelines about the limit on words for SOP. It is expected that a candidate would be proficient enough in stating his purpose to the point.. hence optimum limit 300 words.. As long as you are not rambling in your SOP or tooting your own horn.. Its okie....
Hi All,
Cases that were discussed during the CD sessioo today are:-
(1)Arun, a bright young MBA graduate, who has spent ten years in the corporate world, is tired of politics in the corporate sector and volunteers his services to a non-denominational religious structure. He is the son of the seniormost trustee, whose old age prevents him from taking an active part in the running of the institute. Arun joins as a Sevak since his focus is on providing his services rather than earning money.
He is amazed at the long lines of devotees, who stand in the hot sun, waiting for a glimpse of the deity. He wants to apply management practices and process controls to make the practice more streamlined and efficient and improve the overall experience of the devotees.
Arun creates a waiting area, with snaking lines, in the foyer area, so that the devotees are protected from the sun. He gets fans increased and placement changed to ensure fresh air. There are metal railings to create the divisions for the lines. He places thin metal benches alongside the railings, for people to sit on briefly. Soft piped music of devotional songs plays in the background. He also starts a feedback process, to gauge the reaction of devotees to these changes.
Arun feels that his efforts have been rewarded with the positive feedback of the devotees. This encourages him to come up with the following ideas:
1. Introduce the sale of merchandise related to the deity – books, stickers, posters, etc.
2. Start a canteen which will serve hot snacks.
3. Give the security personnel basic training in being courteous to the devotees, rather than shooing them forward.
4. Segregate the devotees and have different lines for the elderly and the handicapped.
5. Enter the online world for business development – for example, an online puja system, where devotees can pay online and see a live feed of their puja taking place.
6. As a marketing strategy, start a Free Food service for underprivileged children. Advertise it and collect donations.
7. Expand business by starting a guesthouse where devotees who are willing to pay the price can stay the night.
8. Introduce membership plans – including gold and platinum plans – where members will pay extra for out-of-turn access to the diety, and special pujas. The income from this will be used to cross subsidise food, shelter and puja's for those who cannot afford it.
Arun was very happy till he found out that some of the trustees disapprove of the initial implementations as well as these new ideas. They feel that the current process has been in place for the last hundred years and that there is no need to change it. Standing in long lines and suffering in the heat is a test of a devotee's piety. They feel there is no need for short lines.
Moreover, they feel that Arun is butting where he is not wanted, trying to take of the institution. They think he is trying to commercialise and reorganise the entire foundation on which the structure has been standing.
Question:
1. Can management be applied to religion?
2. If yes, should it be applied to religion?
3. What should Arun's next step be?
