Need some Opinions on CFA

I found this news in CFA website..please read 2nd: last paragraph..

Dear CFA candidate,

You may have been aware of the recent court cases in India concerning the CFA Program, and specifically, the administration of the June 2007 exams there.

We are pleased the Delhi High Court permitted the CFA exams to be held in India as scheduled on 3 June. However, our writ petition before the Delhi High Court challenging the AICTE decision prohibiting the CFA Program in India remains pending. As a result, we are currently unable to accept registrations from Indian candidates wishing to write the December 2007 Level I exam, even if they wish to sit for the exam outside of India.

In view of these ongoing legal proceedings, we may not be able to hold the CFA exam in India on 2 December 2007 as scheduled. If we are unable to hold the exams in India, CFA Institute will refund your enrollment and registration fees.

We will continue to keep you informed of any further developments as we vigorously pursue our legal remedies. Please visit our website for the latest updates.

Sincerely,

Jeff Diermeier, CFA
President & CEO
CFA Institute

Hi Choudary,
I understand that you have the noblest of intentions while sharing your phone number/email ID, but unfortunately this forum doesn't permit users to share their email Id's and phone numbers in public.
If you need to send your phone nos/email ID's you could PM the same to the concerned person(s).

As for the rest of the junta giving CFA L1 Dec-07... are you guys non-Indian citizens or am I missing something?
And do keep posting the updates on the CFA's case in India.

Ciao,
Viv.

hi vivek,

Thanks for the tip on Pagal etiquet. But I dont know waht is PM, I guess I will know soon.

It is only my intention to write CFA-I in Dec'07. I know that the institute is not taking any new registrations for Dec'07, but as an eternal optimist (now in my 49th year), I do hope the courts/ institute etc. take a positive decission soon.

I am CREDIT ANALYST with SBI (have been one for almost 19 years), and am so bored that I studied Spanish for 2 years at CIEFL, and now I thought I would write CFA or MS (Finance) -ICFAI type. Got any suggestions.

I notice that you are from NITIE. Well ages ago I was at IIT B (or Mumbai as it is now called), and used to walk along the pipe line road up to NITIE/ Sandeepni /Powai gardens in the evenings. I loved all those Flame of the forest trees and other greenery. I hope it all continues.Guess you are skeptical. There is a guy called Praful at NITIE in CRISIL's CCAP program. He knows I do walk. Occassionally I make him walk too.

Hie guys ,
can any1 temme wt sal can i expect after completin l3 ..without work exp.. articleship experience .. m doin ca btw,,..hav appeared l1 dis June..

I am a software engineer in Bangalore with 2 years
work-ex. I was planning to take the GMAT by August
this year, but some days before, i came across this
CFA stuff and found it interesting. I would like to
know more about it. Is it really useful and how is it
better than an MBA? secondly, i also want to know if
i should join any institute which is a cfa partner,
and which would cover up 70% of the cfa CBOK and how
useful will that be? Should i take up both the
degrees? I also found that University of North
Carolina--Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler) which is one of
the top20 in US provides the MBA degree and is also a
CFA partner? Other institutes which are CFA partners,
gives the MS or MSc degree.
Please help me.

Does anyone here know when is the high court case scheduled?

i received my refund today. Since i was unwell and i sent my medical certificate i received the entire 845$ back (albeit at a lesser $ rate 😞 )

Did all of you receive the refund?

Bad news:- CFA Institute has substantially raised the fees by 230-240$ for each CFA exam from June 2008 onwards. The fees for CFA L1 Dec. exam remains the same but as it turns out, the resolution to the court case doesn't seem to be coming any sooner and so we Indians cannot take the Dec. exam. So guys be prepared to shell out more moollah for those golden words to be written in front of your name. Source:- Fee Schedule

Dood, they have raised the fees because the material comes bundled with it now ! i think this is good from the big picture point of view because reading the core material is REALLY helpful/important ...as i found out (the hard way) in the Level 2 exam last month
so spending only $ 230 more is really cool cuz otherwise the material used to cost something like > $400

From what I have heard the CFA Institute material isn't all that good.It has very poor reviews too on Amazon. The CFA people came out with their own study material but it did not prove to be too popular so they have decided to compulsorily bundle it with the registration.
As far as I am concerned CFA's mandate is to conduct exams ,how I prepare and which books I should use should be my discretion.Maybe I already have enough textbooks and do not need their study material .I mean it should be a matter of choice not compulsion.
Also this will make it even more difficult for students of developing countries to take up the exam making it more elitist .As it is it was very expensive by Indian standards and now paying for books I may not use..

Also most of the books sold in developing countries even by famous publishers like McGraw etc are discounted and sold as low cost editions taking the lower average incomes into account. If they really wanted to bundle the books they should have come out with a separate offer for
for people in developing countries.

They claim to be a non profit organization I do not know how this latest move fits with that philosophy.

Dood...about the "non-profit" point, i agree COMPLETELY.its really expensive and MANY deserving candidates may be getting priced out.
BUT...i have seen the material first hand, and it REALLY is better than Schweser any day.many concepts r explained with practical cases, which makes understanding them much easier than Schweser's strictly up to the point explanations.
as for buying the McGrawHill books seperately, i tried that.for level 2, i could get Fabozzi,Hull, White Sondhi et al, and another book from the local bookstore (from which the core readings r taken).but all these combined made for not even 50% of the syllabus.so the rest i ahd 2 refer Schweser.my point is that these books r not easily available in India.so one ends up ordering them from outside the country, paying the same cost.and they take the material from MANY books, so getting them all is practically not possible living out here.
My point is that even though we are being made to pay $230 more...which is a BIG amount agreed...but in the long run wunt matter much...especially if its gonna get u those 3 golden words...

Agreeing with Rajat...would just like to add one more point...their early bird registerations for June 08 end way ahead by September end with no court ruling in sight for the same we will all be forced to register in the regular period.....they should come out with some solution for the unfairness of the situation to Indian students....

I think they will come up with an extended deadline or something for Indian candidates...
cuz otherwise its a total rip-off !

dood...do you see anything of that sort for Indian students wanting to take L1 in DEC 07?????

because i dont think they are going to come out with some verdict even by september end which is the last day for registering for DEC.....

its better not to hope for anything presently.....

dood...a relative of mine is a charterolder in the US.he hs talked to some people there and wats happening in India is for complying with the legalities. many people have lost all hope that the exams will be held.but why cant anyone see that if they allow registrations NOW @ a foreign venue and later if the exam IS held in India,(or vice versa) wudnt that create a pretty big administrative problem for them?i feel they are just holding out until the verdict, which i feel WILL be given in time.
also, they have close to 11000 people registered for the course in India...which is a HUGE revenue stream for them.this is just the tip of the iceberg...and they know it ! so be assured that they will do everything to conduct the exams here.
