Need some Opinions on CFA

hello koshy_thomas, ayush123 and all,

I am sure that most of us, while preparing for CFA lvl 1 are already into full time job OR pursuing full time studies.

In that sense, the preparation for CFA becomes all the more difficult. Because we are trying to sail in two boats !

Neverthless, what helped me was to NOT focus on exam. But to focus on putting in the 'time' in terms of recommended hours. And make every minute of the study hour count.

At times, during your journey for CFA, you will feel overwhelmed. Sometimes frustrated. And might question: 'Is the effort worth it?'
At such times remind yourself, that studying or reading books has never harmed anybody.

Finally if everything fails to motivate yourself, then just try to follow the 3Ps: "Practice , Persistence, Patience". And soon you will find yourself standing at the 'Finish Line'.

All the best !

cheers 😃

Thank you so much for your advice. I am going through the feelings you rightly pointed out.

Yes. I will try to put in more effort into it.....

:-)

I have my doubts on whether CFA will be an appropirate degree to get into Transaction Advisory. CFA is more related to Portfolio management, alternative investments.. Though there is no pre-requisite degree to get into Transaction advisory, a MBA degree would be more suitable to get such profiles.

Again, TAS (particularly for a CA) can be divided into 3..Lead Advisory , Transaction tax and due diligence services. Again u shud look at wat profile u are looking for. If ur keen on the latter 2 u dont need any other degree and only CA shud be enuff, and if ur looking for LA then an MBA is the best option.

Cheers

I am a B.Com graduate with 57% marks in graduation. Currently I'm doing Icfai CFA ( group D). I'll also register for AIMR CFA for June 2011. But I have no idea of indian job market. So I was wondering if anyone here would help me with my query.
If I complete Icfai CFA and AIMR CFA Level I in July 2011 what could be my expected salary as a fresher in India?
I am a resident of Kolkata. I don't want to leave Kolkata until I complete International CFA even if it means an acceptable sacrifice in salary.
Is it possible to get a salary of 300,000 p.a. in kolkata with those degrees (Icfai CFA and Aimr CFA Level I) ?
Any help and advice is appreciated.. Thanks.

Puys!

I have been doing some research but didn't get the desired results. I want to know about the job prospects right after clearing CFA? Right now I am an engineer and working in mining industry. I want to move to finance domain.

Do I stand any chance in moving to finance sector after I clear level 1? After level 2? what after level 3? What job profiles I may get after clearing each of these levels?

Any ideas?

Just to add my two cents - The market is improving, but a lot of Finance Jobs either want Relevant Experience, a Solid MBA or Contacts. If you don't have either of the 3 things, it's a very difficult shot to move to Finance.. And it's an understatement to say that a lot of guys with MBA Finance are unemployed.. Which includes a few from the Top 5 MBA colleges of India .I 'm not taking any names here..

Coming to CFA, it's more of an add-on learning. I'm not downgrading it, but CFA is more value additive in the Longer term with the Charter et al. And yes, L-2 is the big deal.

For those looking at shifts, I would advice not to forget their past. For Ex - an IT guy can work with financial models with his coding skills, someone from Mech Engg could work on Quant Finance or tracking mining & Infrastructure sector.. Try looking at how the past can add value to ur Finance Job.

I don't want to disappoint anybody. It's good & really important to dream, but the ground realities too should be taken into accounts. Interests are one thing, passion is another.. If you are amazingly passionate about Finance, go for it..

And yes, for those shifting paths, be ready for an Interview question - Why do you want to shift from Mech Engg/ IT/ Telecom to Finance? This question is very important.

Adios. Sorry if I've disappointed/disheartened/demotivated anyone.
To end with a quote by Coelho - When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. Good Luck & All the Best :)

CFA Level2 is recognized as minimum for Investment Finance knowledge.

As you have some years of industry experience, with CFA L2 u can try to move into equity research for the industry u have knowledge about. Try checking the Brokerage & Securities Firms which employ analysts for the mining or related industries.

For I-banks MBA/CA would be required along with CFA. For derivatives & trading also i dont think CFA alone will be helpful,

Hi
I am registering for l-1(Dec 10).The credit card is from HDFC bank.
The card has the VISA logo on it. But each time i try i am getting this error:

Transaction was not successful. Please call your credit card company or try another credit card. (SBL-APS-00802).

The form is asking for billing address. I tried selecting the "same as shipping address", but the problem still persisted.

Anyone had the same problem? If so,What did you do? Please help. 😞

hello all,

On the verge to complete the first book i.e ethics and quants, left with the last 3 topics. Hope i am going with good speed.

Probability distribution chapter tested me a lot.. spl the continuous uniform distribution.. But when i solved the questions from kaplan and cfa curriculum, i found it very easy.

and also monte carlo simluation method is not explained in detail, any idea if its covered in detail in the level 2 or 3?

One more query: Do we get a different set of curriculum for level 2 and level 3 respectively???

As there are many subjective questions(which are not asked in level 1) at the end of every chapter in cfa books, should i practice those questions now ?

I was facing the same problem, used 5 credit cards but none of them worked. I believe most of the credit card issued in india is not international, and its only valid in INDIA and Nepal, due to which you can't make transaction in U.S.

So either you need a International credit Card( U can also try with a International Debit card, i asked them and they said they do accept debit card) or you can do wire transfer, but it takes time. ( I called one of my friend in U.S to do the payment for me)

Hope it hepls

Hve a look at this.and nobody can tell you the exact salary as it depends on various factors like experince, compny etc.

PayScale India - Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Salary, Average Salaries
At least above 1 L p.m.

Not true. U r exaggerating here. 5-6 L p.a. seems more realistic.
At least above 1 L p.m.

Seriously, the amount of BS on this thread is mind boggling. Half of the people dont seem to have a clue about CFA, the kind of jobs you can apply for, the use of the degree etc.

Most people who want to know about CFA, just read the inital few pages and ignore most of the later pages as it is filled with all kind of exagerrated and in some cases absolutely wrong information.

very true indeed !

also most ppl seem to think CFA is the Holy Grail that can fetch them huge money...My humble advice would be to not chase anything for the sake of money....passion towards anything u do will take one to heights

as regards to salary...its a function of following factors

-->Work Experience(core finance preferred)
-->Education Background(most top notch jobs in IB require IIM A/B/C/ISB)
CFA is considered Icing on the cake n not the cake itself !(mind the difference)
-->Networking(while this factor plays a role in everything in life but its importance in IB is most crucial )

Hello Puys!

I'm in my third year of engineering right now. CFAinstitute site mentions that the candidate has to be in the final year of his graduation at the time of registration.
Will I be eligible for a Level 1 June 2011 attempt considering I'll be taking my 3rd year exam (6th sem) in June-2011 and I wont be technically in my final year of grad in June-11?
To add to the confusion, I've seen a guy in PG clearing Level 1 in June 2010 while being in his 3rd year of engineering.
Please help me out.

That guy broke the law to clear L-1, which is a violation of CFA Insitute's Ethics - EPIC FAIL :-/
