Guys,
First of all apologies to ask these questions again incase I am repeating them. I tried browsing through some pages but could not get specific answers.
Would be great if some one helps me out with these.
1. I am an engineer by qualification with 3 years work ex in IT. I am interested in CFA. How difficult will it be for me to start the preparations?
2. Do we have any pre-requisites for appearing for this exam?
3. Do we have soft copy of the notes? Else can we get hard copy of the same at a cheaper rate somewhere in Mumbai?
4. Do I need to join any classes or can try and prepare on my own? Asking this question coz I donot have any background in finance (education and work).
Please help. Also request someone with similar profile who has cleared or preparing for the same to share his experiences.

CFA level 1 will take you through the basics of fin and accounts..there are no pre-requisites for appearing for CFA..soft copy of schweser can be available...usually people (who have background) prepare for the exam on their own..you can get the notes and then see for urself if you would need joining classes or not

Hi dahiya..its not possible to place every individual within a definite salary bracket..I guess that is why there haven't been any replies till now...you can try taking some other certifications also with CFA to widen ur domain..
Hi All,
In all likelyhood i would be joining a Bank as a probationary officer soon. Currently I have a marketing background and want to switch to finance. I want to know will it be a wise move to do CFA with Bank PO job. What will be the career progression. Do foreign banks, investment bank, etc... have openings for CFA with 2-4 yrs of work experience in Banking domain??? and more importantly if I drop MBA plan altogether, will I be able to make a career out of Bank PO + CFA......
Warm Regards,
Ankur

First of all..which CFA are u talking about?
The CFA by CFA instt takes good amount of prep (after giving 50000+ u would wanna be extra prepared as it is)..there arent I-banking many I banking profiles in the market..but CFA is no doubt the first step towards that...about dropping MBA..it depends on the level of college ur talking about..if u happen to get selected in SP JAin+ level college..the finance course there itself will get you a good palcement and get you decent prep on CFA (plus if there are other students with u preparing for CFA..ull have a decent prep..trust me on this one..study groups really help for CFA)...
MBA from low level colleges can obviously be given up for a qualification as high as CFA (US one..)

Even PSU banks have treasuries and all..CFA will help you in trasury roles as such.. however if u want to get into conventional roles (like branch banking) etc. then CFA wouldn't be of much help..there are some certifications in the market that are endorsed by banks..they will help you a lot in ur banking ambition.

Looking for more opinion
I have had this doubt for a long time.
Would 2 years of work ex as bank PO go well along with CFA or Would it be as good as IT work ex?
What my concern is that after Level 2, I would like to shift to a core finance job.But CFA alone cant guarantee that.It would help if I had some related finance work ex.
Few Options:
- Working for brokerage firms(though I am not sure if they would hire an engineer)
- Working as a bank PO.
- Any other option, Please suggest.(I dont mind the pay cut, if the experience is helpful in the future)
All in All,what can we do to improve our chances of getting a core job after CFA?
There is no point in supplementing CFA with certifications like NCFM,right?

I dont think a scale-1 officer would get to work on treasuries and all in the starting.Banks train their new hires in every field for the first 1-2 years and then place them according to performance I suppose.

For your other queries, you have already answered them
I dont think a scale-1 officer would get to work on treasuries and all in the starting.Banks train their new hires in every field for the first 1-2 years and then place them according to performance I suppose.sorry i am replying these certifications are that offered by www.learnwithflip.com and IIBF , by going through them it is possible to have a through understanding of the indian banks and financial systems , after that bigger certifcations like CFA, FRM can be given a chance.teasury is offered in level 3 generally in PSB (have known from a banker friend)
What certifications are you talking about?

Can anyone tell me what is the exact study material that i have to follow since i have no background of finance. also can anybody help me know if i can get this material for a cheaper price. my brother had appeared for cfa 3-4 years back and he had actually got the whole material's photocopied version from somebody in mumbai jus for 4000 bucks. can somebody gimme such a contact.

Hi,
I have CFA level 1 in June 10 but I haven't prepared anything for it yet. I was wondering if I should withdraw from the examination or go and attempt it.
Some points I wish to ask are
1. Even if I withdraw, I will have to pay exam registration fee again. If I appear and flunk, then the 1st deadline for dec level 1 is aug 27. So I will have to pay the same amount either way. This motivates me to go and attempt the paper
2. If I appear and flunk in June, then reappear in dec and pass; would my mark-sheet or score card show that I flunked in June earlier. Say when I am applying for a job, would my prospective employers know that I cleared level 1 in more than one attempts
An early reply would be most appreciated as level1 withdrawal deadline is round the corner

As per my understanding such work experience will be required to become the chartered member of CFA after clearing all three level.
My question still remains. After 2-3 years of experience as a Bank PO in a PSU and if I clear all three levels of CFA can I get a high-end job in a foreign/private sector bank(I m excluding PSU as I guess CFA (US) is still to get indian affilation, so they will take only CA/ICWA etc) as a treasury,et al.

1. Go for the exam as...
2. ...No one cares how many years you took to clear the exam. I dont think any1 would know about it / and care to ask too.

as a PO first 6-7 months you would be on probation...not a permanent employee...you would be undergoing training...
ur job wouldn't be providing much value addition..
most probably with PO you would be starting in a PSU branch (not head office etc.)..and it would take quite some time before you do some meaningful work that adds to ur credentials for a high profile (I think by high end profile you mean treasury kindaa roles)...
with CFA (all three levels cleared) you can get good roles..but only because of ur CFA cleared levels not because of ur PO work...
it would be better if you for work ex in brokerages etc. altho I am not sure what kind of roles a Btech would get...
