How to solve Q25, plz help
It's been a while since ISRO interview has taken place, so I might not be able to recall all questions, but I will try to story-tell it. I was interviewd at Hyderabad NRSC. The reporting time was 8 am. After document verification, we were sent to a lobby near interview conference room. One important thing was, that apart from basic info, we were asked to write details on present status and whatever we pursued during the gap (if any) between degree and present date. The order of interview was decided by order on the list they had. I was by luck, first candidate. The interview lasted for 20-25 mins. There were about 8-10 panel members, of them only one being lady. The senior most (in age too) greeted me with loud voice, "Neeraj!! hello come in, come in". I needed this warm welcome very much, because I was little nervous. They cheered me up, and boosted my confidence. After I sat down, they asked me a little about my background. Also, after checking my degree year in BE (2014), the natural question was how I spent these two years. I honestly told them whatever I did. They also asked me my written test marks. Now panel head said to me, "look Neeraj, we will ask you very basic and simple questions on technical subjects. So tell us some subjects you are comfortable in." I told: Electromagnetic waves, Communication Systems, Basic electronics. Then another panel member went, "and you are comfortable with Diodes, BJTs, MOSFETs etc." I immediately nodded , "yes I am." The panel member who apparently handled electromagnetic waves went, "Can you tell me ABOUT maxwell's equations?" Now funny thing was that I took question on its face, and went on explaining," James Clerk Maxwell, a theoratical physicist postulated........", and they interrupted me," no no no, you explain Maxwell's equations on the white board that's behind you, here's a marker." I blushed stupidly, stood up, went to board, and started writing from the very first equation. I am not habitual of writing on board with markers, so letters were small, on which one guy went, "Neeraj! write little bigger, it's not visible". After little effort and terrible handwriting I was able to write all four equations. They asked me to write corresponding law to it. So I did. On the second Maxwell's equation (div.B=0 ), I failed to recall the scientist's name (later found out it was Gauss only :P). I said, "I will tell you later when I recall it", and went on explaining each law associated with equations. I never recalled it. Next, stream of questions went on like this: "What is intrinsic impedance? Write expression for it." "You have an isotropic radiator. Intrinsic impedance of medium is known to you. Transmitted power is also known. How would you find out amplitude of electric field at a particular distance. Show what equations you will use." "What do you mean by a parallely polarized wave?". I answered, but he wasn't satisfied. He went on explaining question as if I did not understand the question. I said, "sir may be I don't understand the question." They immediately moved to the next question. They were very quick. There wasn't much time to think about, so I felt it was safe to tell them in straightforward manner if I did not know the answer/was confused about the question. "Do you know different frequencies used for different applications? At what frequencies waveguide is used? Why we cannot use waveguide at low frequencies?" Next they moved on to devices and circuits. "What is mobility? Differentiate between drift and diffusioin." "How would you define electron and hole? What is the difference?" "Which has higher mobility, BJT or MOSFET?". This was confusing question to me, so I said that I do not see any comparison on mobility. Then question was modified to: " Which has higher switching speed, BJT or Mosfet?" "What do you mean by thermal runaway? How can we avoid it?" "What is LED? What is difference between LED and normal diode? What is material used for LED? Why?" After all answers, panel head said,"Ok Neeraj. You can go now. All the best." I said thank you, and left the room with big smile, very happy. I was honestly pretty confident I would get selected. I collected TA (in cash) and left the premises. Didn't wait for anyone after me sharing their experience. I have listed almost all questions. I answered all questions with a couple of exceptions. There were hardly any questions on Communication Systems. Although I have written questions on same line above, but of course they were asked after my answer to previous question. Wherever necessary, I used white board to write equations. To my surprise, I was not asked about my final year project. From what I see, I would suggest aspirants following points: 1. Panel is extremely comforting and friendly. That's true for most panels. So just try to relax yourself before interview. Don't panic. The first couple of minutes into interview are gonna be challenging, but once you are in flow, you will do better. Don't forget to make eye contact to each member while you are explaining the stuff. Smile occasionally. 2. If you are first candidate, or atleast in the beginning ones, expectations are naturally high, because panel is initially really charged up. Do your best in making the impact throught you confidence. Try to maximize use of white board to illustrate answers, although you don't have to overdo it. 3. Prepare 4-5 technical subjects for interview really well. First, stick to basics. I think my interview was fairly easy for a candidate well versed with fundametals. This might not be so for everyone. Be prepared for the worst. If you have made a good first impression and good last impression on interview, particularly last impression, you have good chances of selection (depending on number of vacancies). 4. Although there are 8-10 members in panel, not all engage in asking questions. So why are they there? to eat snacks may be? To test your conduct, overall personality. Whether you are able to explain what you have learnt. Such large number of interviewers can seem intimidating, but you need not worry if you have prepared for interview. Preparation will give you confidence. 5. Reach interview venue before time. Check all documents, a day in advance. Don't forget to keep a pen with you in interview room. If I have missed anything, comments are welcome. All the best! Neeraj Jagwani Electronics Interview panel position: 19
