I am a chemical engineer working with a petrochemicals major in the manufacturing site as a field engineer. I will have 5 years of exp this sept. As a VLMP aspirant, I would be very pleased to know the chances/eligibility for my call for the written test. Pl guide me on the preparation for the exams, u may pl share your experiences and methods for prep.
You stand a good chance. The current batch has about 10 students from oil&gas; / petrochem background. Prepare your application well including the essays( very important). The quant & verbal exams will be 1 grade below that of CAT level. The engineering aptitude will test very basic knowledge of all engineering streams (from computer science, electrical, electronics, mechanical, chemical & material science/metallurgy, civil etc). Suggest going through basics of all branches of engineering.
Hello VLMites, I had attended the VLM interview on Dec 2009 and I was not shortlisted for that year. I didn't tried for last year due to personal reasons (IIMC is not providing family accomodation). I have some queries regarding the course, fees etc. 1. How is the trend going in VLM batch? Are they coming to this course mainly for role change or for final placements? 2. How is the placements and what are the roles they r getting? 3. What is the fees for this year - 7 or 9 Lakhs? 4. Is there any industry sponsored people? 5. Does IIMC has any plans in future to accomodate the family for this course? Thanks & Regards, anna

Hi 1. Since most of the incoming students are from industry(shop floor) background, the focus is on role change. But placements are also important aspect that guides them. 2. For last years placements, the data is available in the website. 3. Fee for the current batch is 9L 4. Yes we have sponsored candidates in present batch. More details about batch profile is available in the website. 5. So far only PGPEX & few PGP students are provided with family accommodation. We do not have much information abt ur query as such. But u can call up IIMC & find out. Also note that the program is divided between 3 institutes & is highly travel intensive structure. All these aspects should be considered before taking decision.
Dear seniors, In the website it is mentioned that GMAT score could be furnished to substantiate the academics. how much beneficial it will be for one to have a good GMAT score even if one has a satisfactory academic profile?

Shortlisting for the written test & as well as for the program is based on the candidate's overall profile(acads+work ex + essays + written test performance + interview). If you have taken GMAT(optional) score then u can pride the details. A good GMAT score will definitely help in having a good overall profile, but it alone is not the sole criteria.

Hi Harsha The requirement for admission is that one should have 5yrs or more work-ex before the application due date is over. This has been the preliminary requirement for all the previous batches. Pls check if you satisfy this preliminary eligibility condition when the application opens.
If YES then the application will have 2-3 essays along with your acad & work-ex profile. The questions for the aptitude test will be a grade below the CAT level & that for the engineering aptitude will consist of basic engineering questions from all streams of engineering. GMAT score can be declared in your application form & your final admission selection will depend on your overall performance & hence will not depend on your GMAT score alone. Pls keep this in mind that your overall performance matters & one should not look at specific aspects of application alone. If you are shortlisted in the written test then the interview completely depends on the panel present. But pls prepare well for standard questions (like -why MBA, why this course, questions from your essays etc) & also questions from your work-ex.
Could u guide me the path that will reach me out to model essays.I have an year left out for preparation for getting into this program so pls help me out.Anything more do I need to get more before facing the interview?Wat sort of attitude do the interviewers expect from the students facing the interview.Anything more regarding MBA.Pls give ur valuable sugessions:|

VLM course is my dream course but I cannot wait for one more year, Is having work experience of 5+ years is such an important factor??
Can deferred admissions be given??
Hi Yes having more than 5+ years of work-ex is mandatory. For further information regarding your case, you can write to the VLM Office in IIM Calcutta & enquire with them. The email id of the same can be found in Contact Us | Programs
I am working in a CPSU for the past 5 years. I wish to join PGPEX-VLM course for the next batch (2012-13). In this regard, I have a few queries: 1. If I opt the category of application as "Self Sponsored- will resign", then when is it necessary to submit the relieving letter; Since I am working in a PSU, it is quite difficult to get a relieving letter and hence I want to know the approximate last date of its submission (any informal extensions of submission date allowed?) 2. Is it necessary to have a GMAT score and is there any importance to it in admission process
Hi 1. We have in our current bath people from PSU. They had submitted a document certifying resignation from the company. You can also provide a "resignation acceptance certificate" from your HR at the time of joining & provide the relieving certificate later on.
2. Hi GMAT Score is preferred but is not a must. Please refer to PGPEX-VLM - FAQs | Programs for more details. Please note that the overall profile is what matters(application + aptitude test + interview) & thus individual segments should not be over-amplified.
All the best.

I think it should not have any affect. Lot of things change in a decade. so poor score in XII should not affect.
