I had reached the exam hall to appear for my Block Development Officer exam. This was the day my UPSC result was to be announced. And that year UPSC has put up on its website that the results would be uploaded at 13:00 sharp. That was the first time UPSC had done so. Usually results are a surprise.
I had asked a fellow candidate, one of my closest friends and the guy I shared a room with on the previous night of the interview along with a third guy (we were all broke at the time) to call me. And strangely at 13:00 he didn’t pick up the phone. I thought my name was not there.
I was about to enter the exam hall and was turning my phone off when it rang. I picked up, expecting to hear the clichéd consolation. “It was your first attempt”, “it’s great that you made it till interview”, “you’ll definitely be on the list next year” and so on.
“Come back fast, you’re in”.
I didn’t ask about my rank, I didn’t ask any detail. I just cut the phone and shouted at the top of my voice. Got a few good stares from my fellow applicants. I picked up my bag and mumbled a few best of lucks to the strangers around me and ran to my bike. It was going to be a long ride back.
Just as I was about to start the bike two guys came running. One asked me whether I cleared civil services. I guess he put the time of declaration of result and my spontaneous eruption into awkward jubilation together. Then he said the two words that made me realise that this was real.
“Congratulations sir”
Don’t get me wrong. I had served as a PO and Assistant Manager at SBI before resigning. I had been called ‘ Sir’ a fair amount of time. But this one was different. There was a strange grace to it. Like somehow it was all changing.
On my way back I got a call from my favourite teacher who was among a handful of people I had told ( that I was preparing for Civils). She told me that she was reluctant to call but still wanted to know.
“I got in madam. I don’t know which service, but I’m in!”
The way I rode back to my friends would be classified as callous and irresponsible by any sane person. But at that moment I was invincible. I was immortal.
The moment I walked into my Fortune IAS Academy, that line from Pursuit of Happyness kept repeating in my head.
“This part of my life, this part right here? This is called happiness”

1> aaj subah se hi lag raha hai ki high court SBI ko fatkaar lagayegi 16 april ke din aur interview round phir se karwayegi(17 me selected po ki joining ko nirast karte hue)
2> according to me women empowerment is making a women independent while they taking their decisions (not competing with men : ki ladke kei tarah ke affairs rakhte hai main bhi rakhungi, ladke daaru peete hai main bhi piungi,,, blah blah blah aur ladko ki barabari karungi., aur haan wo to meri nazar mein psycho hoti hai jo, "women" ko bhi "womYn" likhti hai because "women" has "men" in it.)
3> ye jo womens day ,fathers day ,mothers day,valentines day............ and list goes on , i believe ki ye sab nayi peedhi ke un bacho ke liye hai jo apne kaam aur apne gadgets mein itne busy ho gaye hai ki,apne logo ko bhool gaye hai, for me everyday is dedicated to my mother, father ,siblings and friends..
