The below mentioned post is a crux of 72hours of hard+smart work. Also do's and don'ts have been absorbed.

UPSC CSE 2018 Preparation strategy(Pre+Mains):

HiPEG: History, Polity, Economy, Geography

Major chunk of questions in pre and mains are under the shade of these subjects.

History:

Modern history-- only one book: Spectrum - A brief history of modern India

Ancient history-- Class 11 Tamil Nadu Board textbook

Medieval History--- Class 11 Tamil Nadu Board Textbook

India's strugle for independence by bipin chandra (penguin pub.)-- chapter- 2,3,8,16,17,20,24,29----For mains(analytical aspects)

World history-- Ncert of title"contemporary world history"

Note: NCERTs of history contain irrelavent info which absorb a lot of our precious time. TN board textbooks are to the point and from last 3 years direct questions have been asked in upsc papers.

Link to download- http://www.xaam.in/2016/06/history-taminl-nadu-board-ncert-books.html

Polity:

Only one book--- Laxmikanth-5th edition

Mains- Laxmikanth+ Yojana monthly magazine+editorials of The hindu

Note: 3-4 read of laxmikanth is more than enough for pre and mains. Still if your concepts are not clear --go for D.D. Basu

Economy:

Upsc is not not about economics. It's about ECONOMY- The dynamic version of economics. Macro-economy is dealt with Upsc.

Class -11 and 12 NCERT- ignore  all mathematical formulas.Understand the concept.

A very helpful source which comes to the rescue is mrunal website- - Their economy videos are a must-- Concept building is a no match.

Note: Traditional questions/conceptual questions + current affairs --- economy related questions are asked from these only--- Science and economy--these two are all about current affairs in upsc. Do have a look of questions from 2011-2017.

Note: Ramesh singh is waste of money. Google yours doubts.Still if you want to read any reference material go for sriram economy notes.Link-http://www.xaam.in/2015/06/sriram-ias-indian-economy-complete.html

Geography:

Class-11,12-- 2 books each--total 4 books--these are mandatory. People who don't have concept clear /want to understand more of it--can refer to 6-10 ncert. Questions are asked from 11 and 12 class only.

Read these 4 books 3-4 times before pre and mains.

G.C. Leong- Part 2 of it is very important for concept building. Also a lot of questions can be answered directly from this book.

Maps- Importance of it is unquestionable. A separate post of current affairsof mine will guide you / help you how to use maps for upsc.

Mrunal videos on geography also good for tyros.

Note: Khullar/majid hussain--- not needed-- only few topics like disaster management for mains , khullar to be referred to.

Ecology and environment:

Class 12 biology- last 4 chapters--very imp.

They are also covered in unacademy videos of Roman saini sir.

Environment, frameworks--only one book--shankarias's environment---green coloured book

Environment and ecology requires pre level importance only.

Culture:

Before starting culture, read ancient history first as it gives you a base to read culture.

Class 11 NCERT -Intro to indian culture.

CCRT Website-- let me give you a hack.http://xaam.org/ccrt-indian-culture-notes/ --this is a 50 page compilation of indian culture of ccrt website.

Refer to previous year questions for culture. Some of them won't be answered even by reading these two. For that refer to nitin singhania--only for selected chapters.

CSAT,Optional, CA,Essay, Mains leftout topics, GS-4 ---will be covered in next post

The 2nd part :

1. CSAT:

It's qualifying in nature. Banking aspirants will sail through it easily.

Previous year papers should be solved for this section. Also RC comprises a major part of CSAT. No other mode of preparation should be resorted to.

2. OPTIONAL:

Analogous to CONFUSION for many including me. http://www.insightsonindia.com/2013/10/10/how-to-choose-optional-subject-for-upsc-civil-services-mains/  --read this exhaustively, follow the steps mentioned very diligently.

A piece of advice: Chalk out few subjects which tickle you-- check their respective syllabus--read PYQs---Introspect-Kya me ye question bina koi base k answer kar sakta hu? Kya ye saare questions answer karne me mujhe mazaa aa rha hai?

Let me give you my example: I listed out 2 subjects: Eng lit. and Psychology( History, geography, political science, sociology--- factual and boring for me)

Eng lit. requires a base of poetry, drama, novels etc. Figures of speech and what not-- Though the syllabus is defined, still it will take 3-4 months to get grip over it( not advisable for people like me who want to clear this exam in 2018 and will start preparation from january)

So, Psychology is my bet. Why? Kisi ka optional ho ye to post karunga

3. Essay:

Essays are asked from current affairs of Dec17-Oct18.

General topics require you to have systematic approach of dealing with them.

http://mrunal.org/2011/09/essay-tip-for-newcomers-what-to-write.html -- for beginners

http://www.insightsonindia.com/category/essay-tips/ -- alternative

4. GS-4(Ethics):

Lexicon/subbarao-- any one will suffice.

Person with psychology optional will have an edge over others in gs-4. Why?-- Google it.

Basically GS-4 wants us to have working knowledge of government+ethics involved--- writing practice is must in this section.

5. Mains leftout topics:

World history- as i mentioned , contemporary world history ncert will suffice. Still want an option- norman lowe world history

Indian society, issues, SHGs, etc . - Sociology ncert.Dat's it+Yojana magazine

International relations- NEWSPAPER- The panacea for this topic. We don't have to study diplomacy in upsc for this. Just measures to be adopted are to be dealt with. If you still want an option-https://www.clearias.com/category/international-affairs-notes/

For all other topics - just google " topic name space upsc"-- insightsonindia k material achhe hote hain.

3rd Part : Final Chapter of strategy:

1. Current affairs:

In a line if i want to highlight the importance of CA then: UPSC~ CA

How to read:

The hindu+ PIB+ Yojana+Economic survey+ Internet= Combination of these will be 100% for UPSC .

How to read the hindu: First mug up the syllabus of pre and mains + optional--- news covering this should be read. Ignore rest of it. Editorials should be eaten everyday. I mean it.

Eg. History: Unesco identified kumbh mela as an intangible cultural heritage.

So, what is intangible cultural heritage? UNESCO? etc.

Geography: USA's acceptance of jerusalem as Israel's new capital.

Israels's geographical location, water bodies etc.

Editorials will give you fodder points to be put in mains.

Yojana -- Make a gist of this magazine-- will help you in mains, essay, GS-1,2, Interview

Note: people read EPW,RSTV,India yearbook etc.---- not needed at all.

' Your preparation should be oriented- Before starting any subject- previous year questions- books- mocks-repeat'

2. Answer writing for mains:

http://www.insightsonindia.com/2016/05/23/ias-topper-tips-upsc-mains-answer-writing-kirthi-c-rank-14-third-attempt-regular-follower-insights/

3. MOCKS/TEST SERIES:

Visionias test series- pre and mains. Its a paid one. If you want a link to download the paid test series then comment.

For mains- Insights secure initiative by insightsonindia is the best one.

How to use online resources for upsc?--- I will post this after 20th dec.

Queries will be welcomed!

Have a lovely day ahead.
