Have anybody read the Economic Survey and chapter regarding Banking Industry.
Here is my Short Snapshot of the those mentioned chapters.
The discussion around Indian Banking has provided many specific ideas and challenges to tackle.
The Most important ones are
1. Stressed and Restructered assets usually termed as NPA
2. Difficulty in complying with Basel III norms with respect to Capital adequacy
3. Need for Goverance reforms based on finding given in the report on Nayak Committe
All the indications regarding Size of credit in India with respect to its GDP and its proportion accounted for by Banking Industry with level of development are only reasonable and are not good. But this has not increased substantially. India is not an outlier but similar with major countries in the same yeat
Challenges in the Indian Banking Industry lies are
1. Policy
2. Structure
The Challenges has been called by " Double Financial Repression" which are created by the following factors.
Asset side by
Statutory Liquidity ratio (SLR) : Reducing the SLR so that to free the funds to raise private resources.
Priorty Sector Lendin (PSL): This, according to the Some Reputed research has found to not doing the intended benefit to the sectors. And also this has been abused by many. Which shows the PSL was utilized for the increase of agriculture income even though credit has risen. Also Biggest beneficiaries of the PSL are the Zamindars and those living in urban and semi Urban cities.
Liabilities side
Negative Interest rate
The Structural problem is due to competition and Ownership : Lack of Competition.
The solutions to these problems are 4 Ds
Deregulate: Relax asset side repression. reduce SLR and incentive for a deeper bond market and ease in PSL norms
Differentiate : Differentiate between public sector banks because there is sufficient variation in the performance of PSB and one-size fits all does not work for
a. Governance reforms
b. Public Ownership
c. Exit
d. Recapitalization
Diversify: WIthin and outside the Banking system.More Banks and More kinds of banks and better competition from capital markets
Disinter: Better Exit Policy, Better bankruptcy procedures, Asset resturcting compaines, appointment of Indepentant Renegotiation Commission with Political authority and reputational intergrity

In an Insurance interview, one panel member asked me which one will you join, bank or insurance company in case you get selected? I replied insurance. He asked why? I replied, sir because in insurance we have 5 working days. The other panel members started laughing but he said "that's a bad thing to say" but he was also smiling slightly. What can I infer from this? Will they fail me or deduct marks for saying this? 😭
