There are news in Media that Government is planning to merge Banks and want to reduce their numbers to 6. These news have foster debates amongst bank employees in general and young bank employees in particular. I have seen many comments favouring merger and privatisation of Public Sector Banks. If reports are to be believed, Government has decided to reduce its share in IDBI. The question which must peep into the minds of every bank employees must be why mergers? Why Privatisation? INBEF has been able to address main issue under the able leadership of Respected Subhash Sawant through its Dharna at Jantar Mantar on 4th. The example given by renowned Senior Supreme Court Lawyer Sri Prashant Bhushan has been quoted by Money Life. Why 6 Australian Banks refused to give 6000 Crore Loan to Adani who accompanied Prime Minister on Australian Tour? Why SBI Chief was also taken on Australian Tour? How SBI took decision to sanction 6000 Crore Loan to Adani after the same was rejected by Six Australian Banks? Trade Union Sources from SBI give more details. As per these details, when proposal of sanctioning Rs.6000 Crore Loan was placed before the Board, both Officer and Workmen Directors severely opposed the proposal which created hinderances in sanctioning of the loan. The matter was then resolved through bargaining and as per bargaining, SBI Officers and Employees secured Housing Loan and Car Loan at reduced interest rates. Now what if these Rs.6000 Crores turn out to be NPA? We all know about the story of huge loan given to Vijay Malya turning into NPA. It is unfortunate that Top Executives of the Banks have never been held responsible and accountable for such NPA. Ex CMD of Central Bank Mrs. Daruwaala was facing several grave charges and RBI opined that there is nothing in the Statute to punish Mrs. Daruwala. Ultimately she was given a letter expressing displeasure. Is displeasure a punishment? Several Bank Officers and workmen have been punished for unintentional mistakes or negligence in the matter of recommending and sanctioning the loans. Why those who punish bank officers and workmen for such mistakes or negligence should be spared and remain unpunished for negligence committed in sanctioning of huge loans which turns out to be NPA? Merger and privatisation are not solution. Solution lies in recovering NPA from wilful defaulters and making Senior Executives responsible and accountable for NPAs. Just take into Account the interest on NPA account and you will find that efforts of bank officers and workmen have created a mile stone in generating huge profits.
