GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Guys,

please help me out with this:

Officials at the united states MInt believe that the Sacagawea dollar coin will be used more as a subsitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than four quarters, which weigh 5.67 grams each.

2) more as a subsitute for four quarters than the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far lighter than
3) as a subsitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than

1) more as a subsitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than
weight far less than 4 quarters -> wrong
2) more as a subsitute for four quarters than the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far lighter than
more as a substitute...than the dollar bill -> looks wrong
3) as a subsitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than
four q's more than for the dollar bill -> sounds less like comparison and more like adding 4.
4) as a subsitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill because its weight of only 8.1 grams is far lighter than it is for
same as (3)
5) as a subsitute more for four quarter than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than it is for
Looks perfect. Only issue seems that to what "it" refers to. But there's no better option.

Hi Anish,

I also marked (E)..but the OA given for this is (C). Unfortunately, we can't even argue abt the answer and it has to be (C) because this question is taken from gmatprep ....but I m really looking for some convincing explaination ...i just cudn't figure out

Note: this was the second question in Gmatprep1 that I took
Although dozens of New Yorks small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends.
(A) Although dozens of New Yorks small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are
(B) Although dozens of New Yorks small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups,
(C) Dozens of New Yorks small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, but there are
(D) Dozens of New Yorks small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, and there are also
(E) Devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, dozens of New Yorks small museums and also

Can anyone please explain me the answer..I am very confused..

Can someone explain the ans to these Qs,

142. As U.S. nuclear attack submarines prowl their familiar haunts deep within the oceans of the world these days, they increasingly are engaged in missions far different from the tasks for which they were built and for which their crews were trained over the last forty years.

146. Astronomers studying the newly discovered star say that it provides clues about our galaxy's origin, that it may supply data about how fast our galaxy is expanding, and moreover it is perhaps the most distant star in the entire Milky Way.

150. At Shiprock, New Mexico, a perennially powerful girls' high school basketball team has become a path to college for some and a source of pride for a community where the household incomes of 49 percent of them are below the poverty level.(A) where the household incomes of 49 percent of them are
(B) where they have 49 percent of the household incomes
(C) where 49 percent of the household incomes are
(D) which has 49 percent of the household incomes
(E) in which 49 percent of them have household incomes

Hi.. I think the answer is "D".

Here's my reasoning:-

The statement is comparing two yardsticks that cannot be compared. While the first half of the statement that talks about small museums that are devoted to local history and ethnic groups the remaining part of the sentence talks about one-of-a kind museums that are open on weekends!

Therefore conjunctions like "although", "but", etc cannot be used. So you can rule out choices A, B and C. Between E and D, D is better.

I hope this helps! =]

Hi Kumar,

142) answer is (C)
options (B) (D) (E) can be ruled out because of unidiomatic use of "different ...than"
now, between (A) and (C), i would go with (C) because it is more concise and its structure is somewhat in parallel with that of first part of the sentence.

146) i would go with (E)
main problem with this sentence is "parallelism" ...and only option (E) correctly states "...,and that it is perhaps..."

150) I would go with (D)
options (A) (B) (C) are out because of the use of word "where". Note that "where" can only be used to refer places.
(D) is correct. it correctly uses "which"
(E) "49 percent of them".."them" is incorrectly used.

5) as a subsitute more for four quarter than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than it is for

dollar coin-----it weighs-- far less than four quarters is correct comparison or it should have been
its weight is far less than that of four quarters (here verb needed is "is") for a logical comparison.
since the in the question "than four quarters " is fixed we can rule out all choices with "its weight"
this leaves us with 2 and 3 . far less than --is correct.so 3 is the answer
4-- incorrect because far lighter than it (it does not have a clear noun referent, that should be used to refer to weight) is not correct
5.than it is -- wordy and it has no clear referent similar to 4.

What happens when u use conjunctions like although n but is that the clause having these conjunctions becomes a subordinating clause whereas in this case you need to give equal importance to both the clauses hence you need to use a coordinating conjunction "and" to make the two clause equal.

Montague,

Your answer to 146 is correct and it makes sense.
However the correct ans to 142 is A and 150 is C.
I too marked your answers for the above 2 questions...
I have no other means to validate these answers.

Chance of dying is awkward I guess. likely to die is correct
So we can rule out A,B and C
D is better than E. to die should come before the group to which people who exercise are compared.
X are least like to die of heart disease than Y
D is my answer

SET #14.Question 6

After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine is being tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit.

A.tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help
B.tested that could eventually have the capability of propelling aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or to help
C.tested, eventually able to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours, or helping
D.tested, and it eventually could propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or helping
E.tested, and it could eventually have the capability to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

I chose A mainly by elimination. For or in the underlying phrase both the verbs need to be parallel, so propel and help should be parallel. So B,C and D are out. For E, I thought it is verbose

Correct Answer is E. Could someone explain why is it so?

Thanks in advance

Also, does anyone know where to find the explanations of SET questions.

Qn: A study by the Ocean Wildlife Campaign urged states to undertake a number of remedies to reverse a decline in the shark population, which includes the establishment of size limits for shark catches, closing state waters for shark fishing during pupping season, and requiring commercial fishers to have federal shark permits.

  1. which includes the establishment of size limits for shark catches, closing
  2. which includes establishing limits to the size of sharks that can be caught, closing
  3. which include the establishment of size limits for shark catches, the closing of
  4. including establishing size limits for shark catches, closing
  5. including the establishing of limits to the size of sharks that are caught, the closing of

Correct Answer is D
I chose B.Here is the rationale I followed. Establishment needs to be parallel with closing and requiring. Hence, it should be establishing. That rules out options A,C and E. Between B and D, the question boils down to which of the 2 is better. In D, size limits to shark catches sounded odd to me. I eliminated D also.

In B, is the phrase "establishing limit to" correct? I was thinking it is right.

Could anybody explain why D is better over B?

Annascott,
We can directly eliminate A,B & C because 'which' here modifies 'population' and the intented meaning is that 'which' should modify the 'remedies'.

So we are left with D&E.;
For a participial phrase at the end of a sentence to modify a distant subject instead of an adjacent noun, it must be separated from the rest of the sentence with a comma.

E has parallelism error.......so D

1. Car owners who inflate their tires properly can substantially boost their vehicles' fuel efficiency, since the increase in car-road friction can waste up to five percent of car fuel by underinflation.
(A) Car owners who inflate their tires properly can substantially boost their vehicles' fuel efficiency, since the increase in car-road friction can waste up to five percent of car fuel by underinflation.
(B) Because the underinflation of tires can waste up to five percent of a car's fuel by increasing car-road friction, car owners can substantially boost their vehicles' fuel efficiency by properly inflating the tires.
(C) Their vehicles' fuel efficiency is substantially boosted by car owners through the proper inflation of tires that, when underinflated, can waste up to five percent of car fuel by an increase in car-road friction.
(D) The proper inflation of tires by car owners, due to the fact that underinflation can waste up to five percent of a car's fuel by the increase of car-road friction, can substantially boost their fuel efficiency.
