GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hi Ajay - Data as such will always be singular. I would never say "data are available on the internet", instead, it normally goes as "Data is available"....."Data is flowing", "data is segregated", "Data is in abundance"....The original sentence has no anomaly.

Thanks
Nikhil

hi nikhil....

it seems my sentence was not properly framed...what i meant was "data" is plural in the sense that it refers to a collection of information....similar to how "group" refers to a collection of people but "group" is always referred to as a singular noun...similarly, "data" refers to a collection but it is singular in itself...i hope u hv got my point now!!!

Got it Ajay - sorry for misunderstanding... 😃

D. Because of the recently growth in e-commerce required for survival

any explanations ???

A,C,D - the latter half of the sentence contains "such companies", hence, the first half of the sentence must have a reference to the companies, which is missing in A,C,D

E - "of" is missing after "Because"

the only option left is B...

previous ans was B

heres the next one

As rare as something becomes, be it a baseball card or a musical recording or a postage stamp, the more avidly it is sought by collectors.
(A) As rare as something becomes, be it
(B) As rare as something becomes, whether it is
(C) As something becomes rarer and rarer, like
(D) The rarer something becomes, like
(E) The rarer something becomes, whether it is

????

Hi PUYS! .. this is my take..
the statement needs to start with a comparative. hence A B & C are wrong.
D & E start properly, but D uses 'like' which i feel, modifies the sentence in an unintended way...
so E is right? :s

Answer id D.

Explaination - Parallelism. "The rarer something becomes......the more......"
Moreover, Whether is used with 2 options. In this case there are 3 so "Like" is more appropriate

(A) As rare as something becomes, be it
(B) As rare as something becomes, whether it is
(C) As something becomes rarer and rarer, like
(D) The rarer something becomes, like
(E) The rarer something becomes, whether it is

????

A,B,C - the sentence begins with "as rare as...."

as ___ as is primarily used in comparision cases eg. as good as, as rare as 1880 champagne, etc... while the entire sentence aims to convey the meaning that "as things start getting rarer, their value increases"...

D - "like" is incorrect cuz u are providing a generic example, not an example specific to the topic (eg. there are many things other than baseball cards that can get rarer)

hence, correct answer is E....

The answer is B.

C - a conjunction is missing.( I believe u need "but because")
D and E - the second half of the sentence doesnt go with the first half..
I dont know the right grammatical rule that explains this thing.

between A and B , I think B is a better option as it uses Because

The ans for previous is E

here the next one
As the price of gasoline rises, which makes substituting alcohol distilled from cereal grain attractive, the prices of bread and livestock feed are sure to increase.
(A) which makes substituting alcohol distilled from cereal grain attractive
(B) which makes substituting the distillation of alcohol from cereal grain attractive
(C) which makes distilling alcohol from cereal grain an attractive substitute
(D) making an attractive substitution of alcohol distilled from cereal grain
(E) making alcohol distilled from cereal grain an attractive substitute
?????

A, B and C are wrong because which has no clear antecedent.
Between D and E I prefer E because E is similar to the original.

using "like" here will be wrong...

like is used for comparison...there is no comparison here...

"A majority of railway commuters reads or listens to music while travelling...."

In this sentence the subject is "A majority of railway commuters" which is plural since it means many individual part of the railway commuters put together. The verb should be in agreement with subject, which is plural. So reads and listens is used.

I just learned this concept from manhattan SC guide. If you can go through it it will be more clear I guess.
A, B and C are wrong because which has no clear antecedent.

the ans is E
can u please elaborate more on the "no clear antecedent."
