GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

how to prepare for SC gmat considering i would like to go through the rules first ,that people usually use to justify their answer statements with ?

Hi Puys,

I am planning to write GMAT in a couple of months, mostly by August. When do you think would be the ideal time for me to give the exam keeping in mind that I would like to apply for SP Jain and ISB early entry program.

I have just graduated and will be working for Mu Sigma from July 16th. Have heard that the work there is quite strenuous and makes it tough for preparation and stuffs.

Though I have the OG as an e-book with me, I dont have any other preparation materials  and Mock exams with me. Kindly if possible send me links for E-books and mocks. Also I have listed my academic qualifications below, kindly look into it and assess if it is good enough for ISB and SP Jain?

Thanks 😃

Not bad Extra curriculars.

Which of the following is/are correct ?

1. The student was studying when the fire alarm rang.

2. The student had been studying when the fire alarm rang.

3. The student had been studying, before the fire alarm rang.

Pls reason your answer ..

Differences between Because , Because of , Due to.

All three of them provides reasons, but they have fundamental differences in the construction.

1) The match was delayed because of Rain.

2) The match was delayed because rain was pouring on the pitch.

3) Delay in the match was due to rain.

All three of them are correct sentences. but the above sentences highlights how the construction are different.

1) In this sentence, "because of" modifies the clause "The match was delayed" but reason is in the noun form. So "Because of" modifies clause but takes noun. So the construction is

Clause + Because of + Noun or Noun Phrase.

2) In this sentence, "because" modifies the clause "The match was delayed" but reason is also in form of clause "rain was pouring on the pitch" , so "because" modifies clause but takes clause. So the construction is

Clause + Because + clause.

3) In this sentence, "due to" modifies noun or noun phrase "delay" and takes a noun or noun phrase. So "due to" modifies noun or noun phrase and takes noun or noun phrase. So the construction is

Noun + due to + Noun

Due to also can be replaced by caused by.

Do let me know  if you have any further doubts.

A recent poll indicates that many people in the United States hold a combination of conservative and liberal political views; [i.e., they denounce big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting ]many specific government programs for health care, education, and the environment.

(A) they denounce big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting

(B) they denounce big government-they say that government is doing too much and has become too powerful-but supporting at the same time

(C) they denounce big government, they say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful, while they support at the same time

(D) while they denounce big government, saying that government is doing too much and has become too powerful, at the same time supporting

(E) while they are denouncing big government-they say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful- supporting at the same time

OA is A . I have this doubt --if i had to make it parallel i would have done "they denounce big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time, they praise the government , supporting adding the clause "they praise the government " makes the sentence parallel as well as clear in meaning. I dont see any such answer choice .

D would have been correct had it been [while they denounce big government, saying that government is doing too much and has become too powerful, at the same time supporting/they support ] i added "they support" here. Please confirm how A is correct. !!

Comparison Questions in GMAT - > One of the toughest category of questions to crack in GMAT

Officials at the United States Mint believe that the Sacagawea dollar coin will be used more as a substitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than four quarters, which weigh 5.67 grams each.

A) more as a substitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than

B) more as a substitute for four quarters than the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far lighter than

C) as a substitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than

D) as a substitute for four quarters more than the dollar bill because its weight of only 8.1 grams is far lighter than it is for

E) as a substitute more for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than it is for

Now lets analyze the questions in detail:

Option A) because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than four quaters. The comparison is between its weight and four quaters, we need "that" of four quaters to make the comparison clear.

Option B) C) D) Lets understand the comparison properly

X will be used more as a substitute for Y than as substitute for Z

We have a concept of ellipsis where we can remove the repeated words in a comparison "without changing the meaning".

So the same sentence can be written as :

X will be used more as a substitute for Y than (as substitute) for Z

The catch is if I remove "for" the sentence becomes :

X will be used more as a substitute for Y than Z

Now it can be interpreted as :

1) X will be used more as a substitute for Y than as X will be as a substitute for Z

2) X will be used more as a substitute for Y than as Y will be as a substitute for Z

So, there are two meaning and either that is ambiguous or absurd meaning.

So "for" is an integral part of the comparison. Hence B and D are wrong.

E) is wrong because rather cannot be used for comparison but for show preference.

I found this question in many forums but could not find out how related is past verb and resembled is a participle. Can anyone explain.how to differentiate !!

Past Prefect Tense

Past Perfect tense has a very specific use. The tense can be used only in the below conditions:

1) It is required to show Two events which are related

2) Both the events have occurred in the past but at two different times.

3) It is required to order the events one after another.

In that case, 1st Event takes "Past Perfect" and 2nd Event takes "Simple Past" event.

For example:

On hearing that India had won the world cup in 2011, I switched on the television.

Here, we need to order the dependent event one after the another.

1st Event is : India won the world cup

2nd Event is : I switched on the television

If any option is in Past perfect always check if there is another dependent event.

Sometimes, we have sentences such as :

I had gone to the market and I saw that vegetables were over.

Now the two dependent events are :

1) I went to the market

2) I saw

3rd Event is Vegetables were over -> which is not dependent as it lies in another clause and normally, if a event in a separate clause it is not dependent.

For example this OG 13 question:

A 1972 agreement between Canada and the United States reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump into the Great Lakes.

(A) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump

(B) reduced the phosphate amount that municipalities had been dumping

(C) reduces the phosphate amount municipalities have been allowed to dump

(D) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities are allowed to dump

(E) reduces the amount of phosphates allowed for dumping by municipalities

I've done the first 4 chapters, but I feel I won't be able to retain the various rules and exceptions of modifiers and sentence structure. What should I do? How should I proceed so that I can remember all the rules etc. when I actually solve the sentence correction questions. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance 😃

Is there any list of Gmat SC favourites? If yes, then please share. Thanks!
