Thanks Everybody.. I am posting only those SC which i am unable to understand.......
According to some economists, Japan is in danger of plunging into a depression that, with double-digit unemployment, could severely strain a society that regards lifetime employment as a virtual right of citizenship. (A) that, with double-digit unemployment, could severely strain (B) that, because of double-digit unemployment, could be a severe strain for (C) with double-digit unemployment, and it could severely strain (D) with double-digit unemployment and could be a severe strain (E) with double-digit unemployment and could severely strain
Any expalannation?????
Thats ok if you dont understand the question...you don hav to understand the meaning of the SCs to solve them... I ask my students to look at the problems as sc problems...where you have to correct them...
In this case...even I am stumped...I cant see a problem. I mean I dont like the framing that much...but I can certainly try the elimination approach.
Okay... could be a severe strain...is WRONG usage. strain in itself means somethin else..here it should be used as a verb.
So choices B & D out. yayy!!
among ACE I would eliminate choices which have "and" in them. Simply because "and" makes the second part as a separate idea...which is WRONG...because it is a result of the first phenomenon...So it should be continued...
Only A does that...
I am not a fan of A, but I will go with A
hope thats not confusing!
Plz post the answer...given no one else is too keen on trying :|
D- is the answer option i couldn negate with a reason... but whereby i selected C...
any gud explanation on how to negate D...
regards
Jakhar
Hey!!
Its simple!!! "his" is possessive and cannot be used as a subject for comparison with his colleagues... Read the pronoun rules from Manhattan SC. there's an example : Joe's room is so dirty, that his mother calls him a pig.
WRONG. Joe's is not correct. Joe keeps his room so dirty that...
yes for the previous SC the ans is C thanks for explanations

??????
Hi Sushant,
My take on the above question is B.
Heres how i got ther..
We can eliminate options A and C as I dont think 'much' is the correct usage here.
As for option E and D 'distingush' should be used more like distinguish X from Y or distinguish between X and Y respectively...

I go with B
Open to feedback puys.
Thanks, Kartik
Yups even I go with the same answer . Just had to add another point to ur explanation .
Only point I wanted to make is .. we use distinguish between while comparing two unlike terms and use the term distinguish X from Y while comparing two similar items . This leads of Option(B) and Option(E) . Option (E) can be ruled out as it uses the phrase "far less the expert ..." which is incorrect .
Can anyone out here please tel me if we have some gud source of SCs as i downloaded 1000SC from scoretop but they are widou answers which doesn work out wel to correct \analyse the responses....Need to have some stuff which forms the gud grip over SC tactics for whic questions wid proper answers n reasons for d same:confused: helps....

Better start with Manhattan SC Guide...that will help u understand the concepts...later you may use OG...
HI, my answer is B. i negated all the answers starting with much less...far less would be the better usage in order to measure the capacity if a person to distinguish the paintings
left with BDE....
when we use distinguish ..we use it in such a manner distinguish "something from something else"...
also E could be negated because between is used for only two things...
so the answer comes out to be B
what say....???

Jakhar

Go ahead buddy π we are waiting for questions from your side π
1. Although it was expected that workers under forty would show hostility to the plan, the research report indicates that both younger and the older people approve of governmental appropriations for Social Security. (A) younger and the older people (B) younger people and the older (C) the younger and the older people (D) younger and older people (E) people who are younger and those who are older
hi there my take on the question would be...C- we use definite article the to define a definite grp of ppl older/younger...and not just anyone falling in the two categories...that negated option D (2nd closest answer option) might be wrong.... the rest of the answerr options other than D regards Jakhar
1. (A) younger and the older people (B) younger people and the older (C) the younger and the older people (D) younger and older people (E) people who are younger and those who are older
dear puys... wanted some suggestion(s)... i 'm thru with the OG-11 prob solving section..with >86% accuracy( my weak areas would be - TSD& probs on mixtures-ratios and prob.) to tell you prob solving section is my weak area... so my question is 1. is the level of gmat questions same as given in OG 2. what extra material (from my weak area pt of view) to refer that would be pertinent to the level of gmat prob solving 3. i'm referring to OG and Kaplan only (for now) and would consider Manhattan question bank too...so would it suffice my prep... regards Jakhar P.S.- i understand that it is not a relevant thread to ask such a question but i'm of the opinion tht a diverse view on the questions above would help me ...but my sincere apology to those who felt otherwise
1. (A) younger and the older people (B) younger people and the older (C) the younger and the older people (D) younger and older people (E) people who are younger and those who are older
I will go with the Option(C) ....the reason being we need to use the definite article "the" before both "younger" and the "older" people . Consider the sentence as if there were only younger people .In that case we would have clearly said it to be "the research report indicates that the younger people approve of ....."
Other options can be ruled out for the same reasons

any explanation ??? for previous ans was C
Ans. E
Take this as :
Because the recent growth in e-commerce required for companies survival ... such companies have had to re-think their pace of expansion.
Because of the recent growth in e-commerce required to survive in the global marketplace, a marketplace characterized by a constant reinventing of the medium, such companies have had to re-think their pace of expansion.

Because the recent growth in e-commerce required for companies survival
any explanation ??? for previous ans was C
For me the ans is B. A, C and D are out becoz there is no mention about ne company. E) Because the recent growth required for companies survival in global marketplace, such comapnies have had to rethink their pace of expansion.....it shld be because of...also required of X to Y is more idiomatic....also traditional comapnies helps u identify "such comapnies".
PS: Sushant can u pls tell the source of previous "younger and older" questions. Acc to 1000 SC the ans is D. I checked in other forums and people agree to ans D. The reason they chose D over C is that the sentence does not require a deifinite article as we are not referring to any particular group but talking in general.
