GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Why is option A different from original sentence?

Option E, "their" is plural pronoun conflicts with singular antecedent - "the soft drink company", Among option C, D and E, option E fits parallelism well.

It's E

Reason-company is singular and hence has to be specified as it rather than they

According to Italy's top anti mafia prosecutor, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of the The Godfather and near to those he most trusted.

1. the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of The Godfather and near to those he most trusted
2. famous because of The Godfather, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
3. the ailing mobster, famous because of The Godfather, came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
4. near to those he most trusted, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of The Godfather
5. Corleone, famous because of The Godfather, was the town that the ailing mobster came to take refuge in because it was near to those he most trusted

I selected the answer option (5), but the correct option was given as (1).

As contrasted with Walter Scott, Carles ****ens wrote novels that include comic characters to elicit laughter from readers.

1. As contrasted with Walter Scott
2. In contrast to Walter Scott's
3. Unlike the novels of Walter Scott,
4. Unlike those of Walter Scott,
5. unlike Walter Scott,

I think the answer is 3.
But appreciate a second opinion on the same.

Thanks

I will go with 5 and here is my logic, correct me if i am wrong

Here the modifier modifies the noun carles not his novels this eliminates choices 2,3 and4 and leaves us with 1 and 5 .In 1 "As contrasted with" is unidiomatic since idiom is "in contrast to " so only 5 is left as a probable option.

answer - 5
ps25 Says
answer - 5

Correct answer is 5

As contrasted with Walter Scott, Carles ****ens wrote novels that include comic characters to elicit laughter from readers.

1. As contrasted with Walter Scott
2. In contrast to Walter Scott's
3. Unlike the novels of Walter Scott,
4. Unlike those of Walter Scott,
5. unlike Walter Scott,

my take: 5

in 1 - in contrast with might be correct..
in 2,3,4 - charles is wrongly compared to novels..

As contrasted with Walter Scott, Carles ****ens wrote novels that include comic characters to elicit laughter from readers.

1. As contrasted with Walter Scott
2. In contrast to Walter Scott's
3. Unlike the novels of Walter Scott,
4. Unlike those of Walter Scott,

Should be 5. As sentence should compare Carles ****ens and Walter Scott Which is being done by sentence 5 only.

3rd option you selected, here mail noun is novels which should not be the case...

As in Unlike the novels , Carles ****ens wrote novels that include comic characters to elicit laughter from readers.

I hope i am clear about the flaw. :)

Cheers!

Hi please tell me the grammmar rule behing these sentences:

Not sure of any rule but subject+verb+object (noun) is general rule.

infinitive cant be used as object, although it can be used as noun at times, it cant be used as object of verb or preposition.

"going to that movie" here is "gerund" and can be used as object of verb

he suggests(verb) going(noun) to the movie

he suggests(verb) to go(verb or noun?) to the movie

Any other expert opinions are welcome

It cannot be 1,2 and 3 because in all these sentences "which" refers to blastocysts or early-stage embryos.....and that's wrong as it distorts the meaning of the sentence.

4 and 5 are also not correct options...they are not correctly modifying the part- "Scientist have recently recieved pemission to research embryonic stem cells"

I think this question is wrong...what's the source?

IMO the question should be-

Scientist have recently recieved pemission to research embryonic stem cells that,.....,they believe to be capable (Subjunctive)
