IMO : B

Thomas' powerful style and his choices (of subject - the advances in modern surgery, the discipline of sport, the strains of individuals in tension with society or even with themselves-) were as X as Y

clearly A, C, D are out

E - have been would mean that "distributing to X" is still continuing, which is changes the original meaning of the sentance. Also I think "they are" is necessary here.
So, Get rid of E.

B Wins.

@makn
Buddy, u r rite that it is a plural subject but E looks better to me becoz :
1) disturbing in his own time
2) Concise : as compelling for ours

B is also correct but the only problem is disturbing to his own time

well.. yes, distributing in does sound better than distributing to but I thought E tends to change the meaning of original sentance by introducing have been. Thats how I eliminated E

later, did a lil' goggling and found that grammatically also it is not correct.
his own time implies a definite time in the past. Thus, have been (present perfect) is incorrect. The regular past tense is needed.

I think it's option B. Since choice's' are being referred to, were should be the correct starting word for the underlined statement.

IMO B !!!

Thomas' powerful style and his choices of subject - the advances in modern surgery, the discipline of sport, the strains of individuals in tension with society or even with themselves- were as disturbing to his own time as they are compelling for ours.

IMO its E!!!
For the sole reason that "are compelling for ours" after "they" does not sound correct. Whoever has posted this, please can we have the correct answer for this?

Can anyone please clarify if the news that GMAT have stopped testing on Idioms is True?

According to GMAC latest summit
Change #1 - Idioms are being phased out from the test.
Change #2 - There will be more stress now on the 'meaning' of sentences, so to speak.

However after the summit, GMAC clarified that only American-Centric Idioms are phased out. Now no-body knows which idiom is american centric and which is not

Here is what Larry Rudner from GMAC has to say:
"We have been phasing them out ever since our transition to truly managing the test ourselves in 2006. Idioms of all forms, as well as anything that is unnecessarily US centric, do not belong on any test that is used globally, and certainly not on a test designed to measure reasoning skills as opposed to basic skills"

Recent test takers have experienced changes in SC -- more questions stressing on 'meaning'.

My personal point if view is not to get too much stressed out on Idioms. Stick to the grammer rules and you will be fine.

As for practice on change 2, you can have a look at the file attached. The info in the file is from Manhattan GMAT.

A: phenomena , which is... bad subject-verb agreement
B: the original sentence says beggars, which include many ...beggars with many children changes the meaning slightly...also in then end it implies that the new phenomena mob cars which is senseless.

A -wrong. modeled face like X's and body like Y's - it should be X's face and Y's body
B- modeled face after that(face) of X and body after that(body) of Y -- Construction OK. Also, Statues are created after someone's death in order to honor them. Modeled after is better than Modeled like.

C - wrong. complete statue can be compared to a person, not a statue's part.. face to mother, body of wife

D - wrong. No Meaning. a complete statue(not the face of statue) can be made after his mother.

E - wrong. No Meaning. face cant look like mother.
