1- how to decide bw E & C. how is C wrong?
2- how to decide bw B & E. how E is wrong?

Q1. - ANS E.

In Option C, Possessive 'its' should be followed by noun, but here it's verb+ing form(trying to act as gerund that is trap here in this incorrect answer).
Also the subject is same after "but", hence there is no need to again write "it".

Q2 - Though the official answer is B, i would still go or E as it is more concise. In E during which also refers to the time period between 1973 to 1993...while "an era during which" also refers to the same thing.o why not choose E.
In some forums it is given that the clause "an era..." acts as an Appositive modifier modifying Time period
an era during which ... Hope to avoid such questions...:)
correct construction is between X and Y...

E: sounds as if the comet changes orbit as it passes by the earth.

The sentence is referencing the 76-year interval between two passes - the comet passes Earth, then 76 years go by, then the comet passes Earth again. So use of "between" is inevitable.
Between can come before a noun but not a gerund i.e passing.hence the use of its is correct.

Dude,

Q1. Option A is right in this q.

E has a very subtle meaning change. If you look at the original stem, it says the findings lend support to the theory of a black hole LYING at the center of milky way and other galaxies. So, the theory is supporting the process of something lying at the center.

While, E says: findings lend support to the theory of black hole THAT lies at blah blah ........essentially, it means that we already knew that a black hole exists at the center. We just want to confirm whether it is the same black hole or not or whether it is actually a black hole and not a white hole πŸ˜›

Q2. Between A and E, the issue is of a SV agreement, it is not very cleat what "that" modifies in the original stem. If you go with the rule, then that modifies progress, hence A

but logically this doesnt make sense, the decimation and enslavement is plural noun, hence E

Confusing !! What's the OA

Will solve the 3rd one later.. gotta rush !!

Q3.

Option A is the correct one. sheltering in igloos is an adverbial modifier and answers HOW the intuit people have led xxxx

Option B - During needs a definite time frams

C - BAD BAD sentence

D - not too sure why this is wrong

E - passive voice and tense issue.

I found the explanation for D on one of the forums:

PROBLEM: The "up" is unnecessary. The present perfect tense starts in the past and continues into the present. But the use of "until recently" implies that this has stopped, so the present perfect doesn't work.

HTH !

Q2 - Though the official answer is B, i would still go or E as it is more concise. In E during which also refers to the time period between 1973 to 1993...while "an era during which" also refers to the same thing.o why not choose E.

I will justify why I think E is wrong in this way: when you say "during which", which should actually refer a noun and that too a noun immidiately preceding 'which'. In the sentence, however, we do not really have a noun as such. "1973-1993" in itself is not a noun. So, Since the noun is missing, the usage of 'which' is incorrect. Option B correctly introduces a noun for the time period given and hence its the right answer

Hope that helps.

Let me copy the questions here first:

D. devastating and enslaving those native peoples of the western Hemisphere which in the name of
progress are decimated
E. the devastation and enslavement in the name of progress that have decimated the native peoples
of the Western Hemisphere

ok, now for questions 1, the simple logic is to understand that we should always use a 'Theory that' rather than a 'theory of' when we are explaining the theory. We use "theory of" when we have to focus on the subject. For example: Theory of Relativity. Lets assume we have to explain what this theory of realtivity actually is , then we should write, the theory that says something about Relativity...

Question no 2: I guess A has to be the right answer as the subject is 'progress' here and not 'devastation and enslavement'. hence the usage of 'has' is correct as per Subject verb agreement and hence A is the right answer.

Whoa NO, Option E for Q2 is Incorrect!;)

Let's consider the sentence again---
the devastation and enslavement in the name of progress that have decimated the native peoples of the Western Hemisphere.

Clearly -- "THAT" refers to Progress and not to "Devastation and Enslavement" ... Therefore we cannot have "Have" in the sentence.

OA is A

According to a survey of graduating medical students conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges, minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice in socioeconomically deprived areas.

Hi, IMO C. --B is incorrect because it says "minority graduates are nearly four times more likely" --- more likely "What?" - the use of "who" point to "other graduates".. Hence it is somewhat incomplete.

C is a complete sentence- clearly states the intended meaning.

Other options: - A -- " in planning to practice" is incorrect
D is unidiomatic. the correct idiom is "'A is X times more likely to happen than is B." -- this "is" is used to remove the ambiguity.

Hope I am clear. πŸ˜ƒ

As i see "According ...." is a clause separated with comma from another clause "majority ...." or whichever option you choose ....... so is this qstin incorrect ........

Must have for GMAT aspirants
If you don't have PM me, i'll mail it to u

Just a minor correction. First part is not a "clause" at all. It is a "phrase".

This is not just nitpicking, but something that is important from GMAT perspective. One should be absolutely comfortable with differentiating between phrases and clauses, since it is used in multiple areas such as sentence fragments and comma splices, among others.

i would go with B)

a)in attributing criminal or delinquent behavior to some food allergy.

d)if some food allergy is attributed as the cause of criminal or delinquent behavior

IMO B-- reason
option D is unidiomatic (correct idiom is X to Y) -- Eliminate
option A, C and E-- all say that perpetrators are attributing criminal or delinquent behaviour to some food allergy, which is a possible case but it is not the intended meaning of the sentence. Hence, eliminate all 3.

We are left with only option B, which clearly states the meaning that it's the attorney who is attributing....to allergy.
