A fire in an enclosed space burns with the aid of reflected radiation that preheats the fuel, making ignition much easier and flames spreading more quickly. (A) flames spreading (B) flame spreads (C) flames are caused to spread (D) causing flames to spread (E) causing spreading of the flames
IMO D is the correct answer. E is awkwardly worded - causing spreading
My opinion D D is precise and correctly describes the consequences keeping parallelism appearance too "making ignition..... Causing " E is wordy
This question has been posted before but I cudnt find a proper explanation for the answer. Rivaling the pyramids of Egypt or even the ancient cities of the Maya as an achievement, the army of terra-cotta warriors created to protect Qin Shi Huang, Chinas first emperor, in his afterlife is more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete.
A: the army of terra-cotta warriors created to protect Qin Shi Huang, Chinas first emperor, in his afterlife is more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete
B: Qin Shi Huang, Chinas first emperor, was protected in his afterlife by an army of terra-cotta warriors that was created more than 2,000 years ago by 700,000 artisans who took more than 36 years to complete it
C: it took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to create an army of terra-cotta warriors more than 2,000 years ago that would protect Qin Shi Huang, Chinas first emperor, in his afterlife
D: more than 2,000 years ago, 700,000 artisans worked more than 36 years to create an army of terra-cotta warriors to protect Qin Shi Huang, Chinas first emperor, in his afterlife
E: more than 36 years were needed to complete the army of terra-cotta warriors that 700,000 artisans created 2,000 years ago to protect Qin Shi Huang, Chinas first emperor, in his afterlife
The answer is A and the explanation for that is 'The opening phrase correctly modifi es the subject, the army of terra-cotta warriors; the placement of modifi ers and predicates in the main clause makes the meaning of the sentence clear.'
My point is how can an army of terracotta warriors rival the pyramids of Egypt or whatever. The king could have rivaled it in his lifetime and hence the act of using terracotta warriors. Please can someone explain me where I am going wrong in my understanding. My take is B.
A is right in my opinion too. the discussion is about the monuments (as achievement), which was built for xyz purpose
it is not about the 1. time taken to built them 2. kings who built them 3. number of people who built them
hence if you closely look at the options, A is correctly comparing the monuments of egypt and maya to the the army of terra-cotta warriors.
always try to look for the comparison entities, that way you would be able to nail the comparisons.

A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but that they will, or could, be made sufficiently safe in the future. (A) that they will, or could, (B) that they would, or could, (C) they will be or could (D) think that they will be or could (E) think the power stations would or could in option D how can v be sure that "they" refers to journalists or power stations ?
Though there seems to be a reference error in the original sentence, one can actually apply logic to get to the answer ..
International journalists VIEW something as unsafe BUT THINK that they will be or could be made safe in the future.
Now saying that: International journalists think that they(international journalists) will be made safe is non-sensical .. so they clearly refers to power stations here ...
Remember pronoun reference is not a good way to eliminate options as stressed by e-gmat (Payal) also ..
Could some1 tell the ans for tis as well A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another. (A) beating in unison and adopting (B) they beat in unison while adopting (C) beat in unison, and adopt (D) beating in unison yet adopting (E) even though they beat in unison and adopt
beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another ... the bold part reflects that we need to use a contrasting conjunction (terminology just introduced by me :w00t:) .. option D is right ..u need a present participle to modify the preceding clause..
A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass. (A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass. (B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. (C) After passing through a red giant stage, a stars mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. (D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. (E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole
Modifier based Q .
1. passing through a red giant stage modifies star ..
2. depending on the mass modifies whether the star will compress itself or not ..
only D depicts this clearly..

Wait a minute....You mean, a sentence like this is perfectly okay? Walking down the road, the heat of the sun sapped me out of my energy.
Arent we violating the basic rule of modifiers? Who is this piece modying? 'Rivaling the pyramids of Egypt or even the ancient cities of the Maya as an achievement'...Who is/are rivaling the pyramids of Egypt? Army of terracotta warriors? How can that be?

is it that its just to wordy quoting "the powerstation" unnecessarily?
should it be "would be or could"....to make E a right answer?

A)A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, or a black hole after it passes through a redgiant stage, depending on mass...misplaced modifier....INCORRECT (B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.... misplaced modifier - After passing through a red giant stage... should have been closer to star! (C) After passing through a red giant stage, a star's mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole..... After passing.....stage is incorretly modifying star's mass instead of star; (E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. - mass is subject so if itself is passing through a stage then it changes meaning of sentence Incorrect Correct answer is D :-P

"beating in unison" and "adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another. " are contrasting characteristics here. so you need "yet" to connect these two.

The option E calls for a That after think and again use of nuclear power stations creates redundancy. In option D they refers to the power stations and not to the international journalists as the word Majority is singular.

In choice A, "with the intention" modifies portfolios. Notice how "often in the form..." provides additional information for portfolios. This is just a descriptor and hence the comma pair is used to insert that in the sentence. So essentially the sentence is : Asset allocators create portfolios, often in the form of of mutual funds, with the intention to turn in good results in both bull and bear markets.
This placement of "with the intention..." makes it ambiguous in terms of what it modifies. Since it is placed next to portfolios, it may modify portfolios implying that portfolios have the intention of turning in good results. This is non-sensical. Now such "with modifiers" can also modify the action in the preceding clause. Thus, if this modifier were to modify the action, then it would imply that asset allocators create portfolios as asset allocators have the intention of turning in profits. Now this meaning is correct and logical.
Choice A is ambiguous since it is not clear what it actually means. Does it imply illogically that portfolios have the intention (if the modifier modifies portfolios) or does it imply logically that asset allocators have the intention (if the modifier modifies asset allocators and their actions).
Now Choice C (the correct choice) clarifies this meaning. It implies that portfolios were intended to turn in good results. Remember "intended" is the verb-ed modifier. It is not the verb for portfolios. And since it is verb-ed modifier, it is in passive voice. So the appropriate translation is: portfolios ARE INTENDED to turn in good results.
Payal
Thanks Payal. One more question. Is "with the intention to turn" incorrect?
C is incorrect because of use of expression "in its paying doctors and hospitals". @sausi007, you are correct. There is no specific rule as such but there are certain guidelines that we can follow:
Lets look at two example sentences here:
Her singing mesmerized the audience. Here "possessive (her) singing" is fine. We are emphasizing on "singing" as a noun.
Her paying the debt helped the family. Here the expression "her paying" is awkward. See in this case also we are emphasizing on "paying" as a noun. But we already have a noun form designated for this usage - payment. So we should use that as follows:
Her payment of the debt helped the family.
Thus as we just saw, possessive noun followed by an action word used as a noun is weird in cases when the noun form exists for the action word.
Therefore C is incorrect because of use of expression "in its paying doctors and hospitals".
Thanks,
Payal
Thanks Payal. I can understand why C is incorrect. But how can E be correct with a comma before but when there is no independent clause after it. Is that not incorrect?
