Which one of the following is correct and how did you arrive at the conclusion?
Please help me identify the subject and the verb.
1. A majority of railway commuters reads or listens to music while traveling.
2. A majority of railway commuters read or listen to music while traveling.
hi all
i have few queries.
1. wat are the various subjects covered in gmat (DS,CR,Quant.....and???)
2. wat is the score considered fir ISB-HYD ?(with 2years work experience)
3. wat is the fees approximate for mba in isb and how much does it cost abroad in top 10 universities?(approx would do.. )
Which one of the following is correct and how did you arrive at the conclusion?
Please help me identify the subject and the verb.
1. A majority of railway commuters reads or listens to music while traveling.
2. A majority of railway commuters read or listen to music while traveling.
The correct answer should be option 2. Since Majority is treated as plural when accompanied by a plural (railway commuters). Though the usage of " A Majority " in accompaniment with plural beats me. As per me the best sentence would be as below.
The majority of railway commuters read or listen to music while traveling.

Agree with u dude... "A Majority"? there can be only 1 majority in a given group. Considering that the group here is the group of railway commuters. I think even "The Majority" does not fit as we could instead say "Majority" of commuters. However, if the given options are the only ones available, i would choose the 1st to match the theme of the sentence ("A Majority" whatever that means)
Please help me identify the subject and the verb.
1. A majority of railway commuters reads or listens to music while traveling.
2. A majority of railway commuters read or listen to music while traveling.
My Take is in Bold. Now part of the sentence "A majority of railway commuters " sounds that we haved a group. Group is considered to be singular. So it would be "read or Listens" instead of "reads or listens". Just my thought.

GMAT SC says option 1 correct. But i found an explanation in beat the gmat on this:
The sentence about the railway commuters was removed from the latest edition of the SC Guide (that is, it was in the 2nd edition but was cut when we wrote the 3rd edition). The writer's intent was to use "majority" to indicate totality there, but the sentence was poorly constructed - we couldn't actually tell that this was the intent. So, basically, don't study from that sentence - it wasn't a good example.
So peace out :cheerio:
Hi Guys,
i just came across this piece of information and thought that i should share it with everyone...
this is regarding the use of the constructs so
the difference lies in comparison of two quantities out of which one is better. For example, if we have the below sentence:
The movie was not as nice as the book it is based on.
here all we can understand is that the movie was not as nice as the book... which of the two was nicer is not known... however, the intended meaning is that the book was indeed better than the movie...
in such cases, we have to use the so
The movie was not so nice as the book it is based on.
hope this helps... :)
cheers!

I agree to this construct though it is a less frequently used, i read this in school.

No Yaar..But its such a great sentence to discuss..Just cant set our mind on any one.
For me I agree that Majority is a plural, but that can also be taken in parallel with something like a croud
The crowd is angry with the police..etc
In short this is what I am not able to register..
When I remove the words "of people"
A majority reads and listens..(I feel this is correct)
otherwise A majority of people read and listen (which as a GMAT student I feel is actually a trap, and we are made to think and be influenced by the word people.)
Ashish..please throw some light on this...really feeling creepy..on not being able to solve this..

If u go by the Manhattan SC guide book most probably in the chapter "Agreement of the verb wid the subject", u will see that similar examples are given like the one above.
A number of ppl, A majority of ppl(collective noun beginning with A) will always take a plural verb, whereas
The number of ppl(persons)i.e collective noun beginning wid 'The' takes a singular verb.
So if we go by the Manhattan study guide, the answer would be 2. Thats my take..Request experts like Ashish to comment on this further.
Cheers,
Majority of commuters, as used in this context, has to be plural. If the intent of the author was to use majority to indicate totality, then unfortunatley the intent is not being reflected in the sentence construction.
Thanks for such a fabulous explanation ashish..
Have one more such instance I saw today..
A)Army Jawan open fires.
B)Army Jawan opens fire.
guys, which one you think is correct.
Need help on this one..
The nephew of Pliny the Elder wrote the only eyewitness account of the great eruption of Vesuvius in two letters to the historian Tacitus.
(A) The nephew of Pliny the Elder wrote the only eyewitness account of the great eruption of Vesuvius in two letters to the historian Tacitus.
(B) To the historian Tacitus, the nephew of Pliny the Elder wrote two letters, being the only eyewitness accounts of the great eruption of Vesuvius.
(C) The only eyewitness account is in two letters by the nephew of Pliny the Elder writing to the historian Tacitus an account of the great eruption of Vesuvius.
(D) Writing the only eyewitness account, Pliny the Elder's nephew accounted for the great eruption of Vesuvius in two letters to the historian Tacitus.
(E) In two letters to the historian Tacitus, the nephew of Pliny the Elder wrote the only eyewitness account of the great eruption of Vesuvius.
I am stuck between A and E. Please explain ur take..
Another one..
28. The British sociologist and activist Barbara Wootton once noted as a humorous example of income maldistribution said that the elephant that gave rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo was earning annually exactly what she then earned as director of adult education for London.
(A) that the elephant that gave rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo was earning
(B) that the elephant, giving rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo, had been earning
(C) that there was an elephant giving rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo, and it earned
(D) the elephant that gave rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo and was earning
(E) the elephant giving rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo and that it earned.
My take is on B(bold). Coz in C & D , the sentence construction is awkard. E's construction is correct. In B, the clauses are arranged properly to form a proper sentence and also 'had been earning' is preferred to was earning in option A

My take will be E. In A it can not be distinguished clearly that "the great eruption of vesuvius" is a modifier for eyewitness account

My take would have been E..if it were not to have the "and" in it..
"said the elephant giving rides to children at the Wipsnade zoo earned exactly the same" but I find A better if E is supposed to contain that and(A) that the elephant that gave rides to children at the Whipsnade Zoo was earning

(C) nations that are signatories to the UN charter, plays a crucial role in sustaining international agreements concerning human rights, global trade, and environmental protection
My take is C. "comprised of all the nations that are signatories to the UN Charter " is the modifier for General Assembly.. if we remove that we can get

NO . for the 28th one, the answer seems C, since its in the past tense

my take A
@above:
I think that E is more wordy.
"In two letters to..." is an inappropriate beginning. A is more concise and to-the-point.
