IMO A
In C and D, "Africa which was the land " bla bla bla is confusing and awkward...
In B and E, "symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him" means that the blacks return symbolize the possibility of Marcus Garvey's freedom not the freedom of africa...SO Both these choices distorts the meaning..
Hence A wats the OA???
Vishal84 SaysCan you please explain the justification for E? There isn't any main clause in E.
i think the part to be replaced has not been indicated in the question. the question should look something like this... i think this solves the problem of the missing main clause...
Because there are provisions of the new maritime code that provide that even tiny islets can be the basis for claims to the fisheries and oil fields of large sea areas, they have already stimulated international disputes over uninhabited islands.
(A) Because there are provisions of the new maritime code that provide that even tiny islets can be the basis for claims to the fisheries and oil fields of large sea areas, they have already stimulated
(B) Because the new maritime code provides that even tiny islets can be the basis for claims to the fisheries and oil fields of large sea areas, it has already stimulated
(C) Even tiny islets can be the basis for claims to the fisheries and oil fields of large sea areas under provisions of the new maritime code, already stimulating
(D) Because even tiny islets can be the basis for claims to the fisheries and oil fields of large sea areas under provisions of the new maritime code, this has already stimulated
(E) Because even tiny islets can be the basis for claims to the fisheries and oil fields of large sea areas under provisions of the new maritime code, which is already stimulating
###################################################
I think the answer should be C. heres y...
not A because it is unclear whether the part "... they have already stimulated..." refers to the provisions or the islets. however it seems that the islets might be causing the disputes.
not B because it says that because the code provides for... , it has stimulated. this is incorrect as the code itself is not a problem, but some provisions of the code are a problem.
C seems to be correct as it says that Even tiny islets can be the basis for claiming... under provisions of the new maritime code, already stimulating... thus it indicates that the islets are causing the conflict. We'll keep this on hold for now.
not D because it points out that because such provisions are there in the new maritime code, it has already stimulated conflicts. this defies logic because, just because there are provisions would not cause the conflicts but the presence of the islets would lead to conflict.
not E because of the same reason as D. the only difference between the 2 is the structure of the last part which also seems to be incorrect.
Hence since all the others are eleminated, the correct answer is C.
Requesting others to point out flaws in the above(if any). Thanks!

is it D??
will explain if its correct π
IMO D
Reason:
1.Its a cause (cells adhere to one another )and effect(beating and adopting) statement
2. Beating and adopting should be in parallel
3.Since "beating in unison" and "adopting in exclusively" are opposite, yet should be used.
I hope its clear, if u still have any doubt..please post it.

yes the OA is D...but shouldn't adhere, beating and adopting be parallel as in option C adhere....beat...adopt.These are 3 separate actions performed by the cells and hence need to be in parallel.
Also how do we deduce the cause and effect relationship?

The answer has to be D out of the options given.. but clearly it does not depict the best way to frame the question stem....
After reading the question text, the part that gathers attention is the usage of UNISON and EXCLUSIVE 'together'.... so one can conclude that we need a conjunction to highlight the contrast....
hence only B and D remain... B is awkward ; it would be better if they is replaced with and..
now only D remains..

i think choice was planted as a trap... for ppl to think abt parallelism and select that...
however in this case... the sentence would not make sense if we use the parallelism logic...
if u read the first part... it clearly says "a peculiar feature of..." now this feature is that the cells adhere to one another. and it ends there...
the remaining part is actually a new sentence which provides more info abt the cells... thus the cells adhere to one another... and they do xyz things...
hence the first half of the sentence conveys a different idea from the later half... if u notice carefully... the parallelism rule is applicable in the later half of the sentence... beating + adopting (this is because both these are a part of one single sentence and idea)
hope this helps

yes it is...
Again a controversial question with which or that...Which one is correct??
Liver is a vital organ of human body containing enzymes WHICH help in digestion.
OR
Liver is a vital organ of human body containing enzymes THAT help in digestion.
As per my knowledge from Manhattan SC guide, in case of essential modifier we need to use THAT. And in case of non-essential modifier we need to use 'which' with a comma before 'which'. Essential modifiers are those without which the meaning of the full sentence is incomplete(e.g.The house THAT is painted red is my house. Here 'THAT is painted red' is an essential modfier becoz it is needed to correctly indentify the writer's house.) An example of non -essential modifier is "This house is my house, WHICH is painted red".Here 'which' is used bcoz we can already identify the house becoz of using 'this' in the beginning.
So as per my understanding, the writer intends to speak abt those enzymes that helps in digestion and hence it is an essential modifier. So we need to use THAT and not WHICH.
Wht u guyz think? I would also like Ashish(pg name EducationAisle) to comment on dis.
Hi Guys,
just a word of warning for those of u using Kaplan or Princeton material for SC. there is one mistake in the Subject-Verb Agreement rule.
I just started with Kaplan800 and the first example in SC is this:
"
As of this morning, none of my friends have been able to solve the puzzle contained in last week's newspaper.
(A) none of my friends have been able to solve
(B) none of my friends was able to solve
(C) not one of my friends has yet been able to solve
(D) none of my friends has been able to solve
(E) nobody among my friends have solved
"
the correct answer according to the book is 'D' because "none is singular (like every or everyone)"
the above is incorrect and the correct answer should be 'A', because of the below rule mentioned in Manhattan SC and in atleast 10 grammar resources that i have check on the net, and also in the material from IMS classes.
"
THE SANAM PRONOUNS: Some, Any, None, All, Most
How can u tell if these pronouns are singular or plural? Look at the 'of'
construction which usually follows the pronoun. You may recall that you
are generally supposed to ignore 'of' constructions (as they are misleading
middlemen). The SANAM pronouns are the exceptions to this rule: you
should look at the object of the 'of' construction to determine the number
of the subject.
"
here are a few examples of the above:
Most of the explorers have passed through this wilderness.
Most of the exploration has been a waste of time.
Some of the money was stolen from my wallet.
Some of the documents were stolen from the bank.
i really am disappointed that both Kaplan and Princeton have made this same mistake. just thought i should let everyone know...
also since i was just planning to start with Kaplan800 m a little skeptical abt the book now... will have to double check all data and explanations.
i hope i haven't made any mistakes in understanding the above rule... requesting the SC gurus on the forum to kindly check n comment. thanks!!
