GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

My takes.

1. Option D : Because the Earths crust is more solid there and thus better able to transmit shock waves, an earthquake in the eastern United States will typically devastate an area 100 times greater than will a quake of comparable magnitude occurring in the West

2. Option C: Because Halleys Comet changes orbit slightly during the seventy-six-year interval between its passes close to Earth, it may veer onto a collision course with a planet sometime in the distant future.

3. B. : On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles such as the Galapagos tortoise and examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs, scientists estimate that the largest dinosaurs probably lived to be between 100 and 200 years old.
All others are out of question. A is wrong because scientist CANNOT estimate based on something, scientist's accounts can be based on something. But scientists can estimate on the basis of something. Looks to me like a variation of OG question about "Using the account, scientists estimate that...."

What is wrong with option E in second question and for the third question it appeared to me as well as the variation to the OG question!! do u hav an explanation for that..coz i couldn't wrap the OG explanation around my head.

__________________________
Perhaps you missed noticing that B, C, D (and even E for that matter) are in future tense and future tense always uses a plural form of the verb (for example, they will go, he will go etc.).

A crucial issue with A, B and E is that the structure of these options is:

An earthquake will devastate X area if it occurs in the East and Y area if it occurs in the West.

This is a logical problem, since it, as used in the latter part of the sentence seems to suggest that the same earthquake is occurring (or will occur) in East and West. Clearly not feasible.

C is not parallel. You can either compare Eastern and Western or you can compare East and West. You cant compare Eastern with West. Also, the, as used in the comparable magnitude is redundant.

3)C I A is singular, so options that use plural pronoun (D &E;) are ruled out.Option C :withholding disclosure to the public of the identities.the public is not placed properly.
Between A & B,I think A is correct . I prefer "enabling it.." over "for it..".

4)By installing electrical pumps is a modifier. It should modify farmer not engineer /houses.So only D fits in.

5) to sympathize with is the correct idiom. So this rules out A ,C & E.
If you plug in D in the sentence will be...
Sowell aregues that American coservatives have no valid grounds that they should sympathize with.
they has a proper antecedent(conservatives) but I think that is not required .So answer is B.

1)being a carbon copy of x as anyone ever had been.
"being a ",so done/did can't fit .option B maintains parallelism.

2)while is used to indicate to events occuring in same time frame. If is used for conditional statements. So D & E options are ruled out .
C is not worded properly.
Tough choice (b/w A & B) .I'll choose B . I'm not sure whats wrong with A .

Please do post the answers 😁 .!!

I will go with option E.....answer please

1. Cooperative apartment houses have the peculiar distinction of being dwellings that must also operate as businesses.
(A) of being dwellings that must also operate as businesses
(B) of dwellings that must also operate like business
(C) that they are dwellings that must operate like business
(D) that, as dwellings, they must also operate like businesses
(E) to be a dwelling that must also operate as a business

my answer choice is D.

E is completely wrong. Reason: " Cooperative apartment houses" - plural and "to be a dwelling" is singular.
Only contenders I see are A & B...but B incorrectly eliminates "being", which is required to express the meaning clearly.

So A is the answer.

Hi,

Could someone help me in understanding that how do we spot the usage of Past Perfect tense in the sentence? Please correct me if i am wrong
My perception -- Past perfect tense is used when we are talking about a time which is even in an older era than a past time. For example if past tense is being used for 1980 then 1970 should be having past perfect tense.

In 1980 the United States exported twice as much of its national output of goods as they had in 1970.
(A) twice as much of its national output of goods as they had
(B) double the amount of their national output of goods as they did
(C) twice as much of its national output of goods as it did
(D) double the amount of its national output of goods as its has
(E)
twice as much of their national output of goods as they had

Please correct me, i am wrong some where..
