I feel that option a is better than the rest. It uses the correct pronoun. Though it sounds a better wordy, it is in parallel with the non-underlined part of the sentence.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
1.John Smith provides information on the conditions that lead women to a gynecologist, and he notes that these conditions can, and sometimes are, used in the promotion of surgery which is not needed.
Confused, think it'll be either B or D.
Again John Smith himself isn't directly involved in promoting surgery, his conditions are. So I'll go with option B.

I don't think there is any problem with B. Its prcise, clear and grammatically correct. participle phrase beginning with "noting" clealry refers to subject- John Smith whereas in A it is not clear that to which pronoun "he" is refering John Smith or Gynecologist.

What should be the correct form of verb here and why??
was is the correct use.
The qualifier here is countable.(50 milliliters)
if the qualifier is non countable use plural form.
Pagals, the above is an old post.. I just wanted to clarify that bit.
It says, if qualifier is countable, then use singular..
300 men were asked to report back to the border.. That sounds correct, but the qualifier is countable here. So how does the above theory fit in, can someone please help?
needless to say explanation required

Use of "much" Vs "Many" will help here. We always say how much water and not how many water? so any quantity of water will always be singular and use of was is correct there. But the same is not true for Men. We say how many men were there? so use of many here makes it plural.
hope that helps.

D looks good. modifier and subject are closely placed.

(A) may be caused by the interaction where two stars orbit each other
(B) is caused by the interaction between two stars that each orbit the other
(C) are because of the interaction between two stars that orbit each other
(D) is caused by the interaction of two stars where each is orbiting the other
(E) are caused by the interaction of two stars orbiting each other
A). is reduntant , usage of "may be" also adverb of place "where" is used inppropriately.
B). "a number of phenemenon" is a subject of the sentence and "a number" is always plural om GMAT and its verb "is" does not agree with it so eliminated same is with D.
C). is wrong because of the usage of "because" which is not similar to "caused by" or "due to"
. The sentence conveys that the astronomical phenemneon is caused by the interaction of two stars and not because of interaction. These two clause conveys diffrent meanings.
E). E eliminates the problem with C, subject agrees with its verb. overall a best choice and hence the answer
