Question 109 in OG 12th edition:

Among the objects found in the excavated temple were small terra-cotta effigies left by supplicants who were either asking the goddess Bona Deas aid in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help.

In the above sentence, 'her' (objective pronoun) refers to Bona Dea (depite Bona Dea being used in possessive case).

At a minimum, what this sentence suggests is that GMAT considers this structure valid.

p.s. The sentence I cited in my previous post wasn't from 1000 SCs. It was from an old source that 1000 SCs might have picked up from.

@EducationAisle

In the question cited by you, if "her" is replaced by Bona Dea in one of the answer choice then what would you mark? The one with "her" or the one with "Bona Dea".

I feel that the above structure is correct only till the better option is not available in the answer choice.

Setting up a corporation requires more paperwork and legal provision than to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

IMO it's D.

A -- > 'setting up' / 'to establish' not parallel.
B -- > 'setting up' / 'what it requires to establish' no parallel; wordy.
C -- > doesn't make any sense. 'to either establish...or {to + verb} (missing) a partnership'.
D -- > 'setting up' and 'establishing' are parallel; hence correct.
E -- > use of 'and' instead of 'or' somewhat distorts the meaning.

answer is D.

(A) extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than
(B) extinction;its numbers are now five times more than
(C) extinction, their numbers now fivefold what they were
(D) extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had
(E) extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

Plz post answers with explanation..

"The gyrfalcon" is singular subject so pronoun following it must be singular hence C using "their" and D using "they" are out.
E is awkward as in second clause adverbial phrase beginning with "now" seems to be independent of first and therefore a semicolon must be used instead of comma. Hence eliminated.

Between A and B.
As "more than " and "greater than" both are correct idioms. The elimination of one of them depends on which one is appropriate with respect to present question.
Here the comparison is between the number of gyrfalcon birds now and in 1970, which is better implies by the comparison with "greater than". Hence eliminate B.
Therefore I would go with A
The gyrfalcon,an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970s.
(A) extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than
(B) extinction;its numbers are now five times more than
(C) extinction, their numbers now fivefold what they were
(D) extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had
(E) extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

answer shud be D:
justification :the present count is compared to that of the early 1970's.
if we chose our answer choice as A,B ,C or E, we can't compare!

The gyrfalcon,an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970s.

(A) extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than
the correct choice
(B) extinction;its numbers are now five times more than
"more than" is incorrect usage
(C) extinction, their numbers now fivefold what they were
"The gyrfalcon" is singular thus we can not refer back to it with plural "their"

(D) extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had
"they" is plural, it can not refer to "The gyrfalcon"

(E) extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

The official answer is A. I have doubt between the option A & B. "More than" is used for comparing objects and when numbers of objects are present. According to me Option b must be the correct answer. :help:
