First of all, all questions that youve posted are extremely good quality. Can you let us know the source of these questions.

Let me take up the above question that I believe students would find most challenging. It is quite a touch choice between A and B, but let us first reason why the other choices are wrong.

C seems to convey: Creatures were suffering because of food supplies. This is clearly not the case, since the creatures were suffering not because" of food supplies, but because of dwindling food supplies.

In D, an obvious grammatical mistake is a increase, when it should have been an increase. Also, resulting from a increase modifies the entire clause before it. Hence, this seems to suggest that the food supplies (and not dwindling food supplies) were resulting from increase in temperatures.

The relative pronoun which, can never modify the entire clause. Hence, in E, 'which' cannot modify food supplies were dwindling. Therefore, 'which' is inappropriately placed.

Now coming to picking up between A and B. This is where it gets really tough. In general it is hard to pin-point any glaring grammatical error in A or B. But few points that tilt (just a very little tilt) towards B are:

1. ..suffering from is generally used when someone/something is suffering from (say) an ailment. For the usage in this sentence, "..suffering because...." is more appropriate. Not a general rule, but we are nit-picking here.

2. I definitely like as a result of an increase in over resulting from increasing sea surface temperatures. Now read option A very closely again. A better construct would have been: possibly resulting from increased sea surface temperatures. Grammatically (though you dont need to worry too much about this), the way it is currently used in option A, increasing can be interpreted both as a participle and a gerund.

Again, the points I have noted above are not universally applicable generalizations, but since options A and B come so close, we used these to eliminate A.

Thanks EducationAisle. I picked up these questions from the GmatPrep tests. That why i thought it would be great for people around here to solve some actual GMAT kinda questions.
Like always, your explanation is perfect. I actually had an issue with the 6th one. As i mentioned before, i seem to confuse myself with the idea that if two things/phrases are comapred they ought to be the same in type and number for proper parallelism.
for example: In case of question 6).. my interpretation was that since the author says that more than 300 rivers flow into lake baikal.. so the logical follow up shud be 'more than the number of those for all the american great lakes combined'.
i seem to make mistakes whenver u have comparison words like more than, less than or when u have things like 'as likely as' or 'a is twice as likely as b'. in these cases i seem to lose the link of HOW the phrases on either side shud be parallel?
it would help me a lot if u cud guide me on this? i just dnt seem to catch these.Pls help.

Could you explain which would form a better usage?

My answer is E.

Options A & C are out as 'which' points to the word before the comma.
Option D is wrong.
Out of B and E, the sentence 'Given its authoritative coverage of other science topics' modifies the textbook immediately after it, hence B is out and my answer is 'E'.

For the first sentence, this should be better usage->
Man does not fully understand the potential of this drug.

'the potential for this drug' is absurd. It doesn't make sense.

For the second sentence->
The better usage will be the first one-
This drug has great potential to relieve pain

Yeah absolutely C is the best option, as

1). Subject - Verb agreement ( The particular design........allows)
2). This is a cause and effect relationship sentence so the use of idiom "so that" is correct on the other hand in B "and" in second clause of sentence is awkward and is redundant.

@ Education Aisle

Do elucidate the difference between "so" and "so that"

"He is working hard, so that he could pass in the examination." We have used "so that" here to show the cause - effect relationship or it is showing the probability of the happening of the event.

"He is working hard so he could pass in the examination" ??
What will you say about this sentence ?

1). On stage, the force of Carrick's personality and the vividness of his acting disguised the fact he was, which his surviving velvet suit shows, a short man.
(A) he was, which his surviving velvet suit shows,
(B) he was, and it is his surviving velvet suit that shows it,
(C) of him being, as his surviving velvet suit shows,
(D) that he was, as his surviving velvet suit shows,
(E) shown in his surviving velvet suit, that he was

Now the question is what is antecedent to pronoun "his" in the non underlined part of the sentence. There is not any mention of Carrick, the noun but of Carrick's personality which is a possessive noun.

Is this the trap in GMAT ?

My take is D.

Regarding your doubt, "his surviving" is acceptable since it uses possesive pronoun.
