GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Guys i have a doubt. Which of these two sentences is correct and why?

1) Nidhi was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers.

OR

2) Nidhi was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers did.

i can try for this. Nidhi`s climbing ability is compared with her brothers` climbing ability, (which is better than nidhi`s).

1) incorrect: since it compares nidhi`s ability to climb with her brothers and not with her brother`s ability

2) correct: Nidhi was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers did.
or
Nidhi was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers can.

I am not yet 100% convinced but this is what i can contribute.

@MissionPGPX, there is an another angle to look at the problem also.

in sentence 1 : "did" is implicit . for the reason of conciseness it is ommitted. Thus making sentence 1 correct and the better choice as compared to sentence 2.

i am also not very much sure about what rule to apply here. it would be of great help if some expert can provide insight.

Nidhi was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers.
Clearly, here Nidhi's ability to climb is being compared with her brother and not with her brothers climbing abilities.

Nidhi was able to climb the tree as fast as her brothers did
Here, Nidhi's some past action which in this case is "ability to climb tree" is being compared with his brothers' past actions which is clearly mentioned by elliptical construction in the form of word "did".
So this is absolute correct sentence.

First sentence should be modified like this to get correct " Nidhi could climb the tree as fast as his brothers."

Nopes Dude, I have been regularly visiting this forum from last one month and OA is being provided for every question asked. Infact some GMAT experts also visit this page and helped us to clear our doubts.

You can visit previous pages to check the OE of the question you want or just quote the question again and we will try to give you the OE.

I'll choose 'A' in 42. 'D' and 'E' are out due to reference 'it' more likely in 'D' and rather than is redundant. Also 'as likely for ' is weird in 'E'. Practicing in socioeconim deprived area sounds awkward. 'practising ' here is not either acting as present participle or gerund. practice in as in 'A' sounds right.

Again 'A' on 41. use of 'if ' is not required in 'B'. 'C' talks 'have suffered' then uses 'do' (present to refer the past, incorrect. 'D' goes passive voice again not needed to use passive sentence here. 'E' does similar mistake as 'C' but in reverse way. using past 'did' to refer present 'suffer major depression'.

wats OA??

Combining enormous physical strength with higher intelligence, the neanderthals appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path, but their relatively sudden disappearnce during the paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led o their extinction.

A)appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path
B)appear to have been equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
C)appear as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
D)appeared as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
E)appeared to have been equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,

Please post the answer with explanation.

Doubt: Isn't "have been equipped" is an indication of passive voice in the sentence? If yes then should be followed by "by....". I have a confusion here. Please read option (B).

@EducationAisle: can you please through some light on this?

have been equipped , present perfect tense is not needed in the statement. Neaderthanls have already extinct, no need to use 'have been'. strikes out 'E' and 'B'. 'C' is attractive but uses paths singular ,which shud be paths. for facing in 'A' shud be replaced with infinitive 'to face'. I vote for 'D'. wats OA??

OA is B. Though confusing but the answer.

dont get confuse for any passive construction not followed by "by". MGMAT SC has something mentioned for this. refer page 43. I am copying the related content:
whenever the writer wants to deemphasize on the person who did the action and emphasize or focus on the action performed then he can neglect the phrase starting with "by".

example: in this operation, new blood vessels are inserted to bypass blocked vessels.
doctor does the operation, but the focus is on blood vessels being inserted in the operation, rather than on the person inserting them.

hope that helps.

Please post answer with explainations....

The answers mentioned are:
41) A
42) C

My takes are :

41. A
42. C

Could you please explain how you got the answers??
In 42, doesnt 'C' alter the meaning of the original sentence...
since original uses more likely and not as likely. and also, why shud we use as likely?

Also, for 41,why is 'D' not right?
thnx..

I would stick with 'A'.
Now B,C,E, keywords used like although, despite and even though cite comparison but donot follow with 'as' after the underline..
D sounds a bit awkward and wordy.
What is the OA???
by, as you would appreciate, would tell us who equipped the Neanderthals (as in have been equipped by God). But in the context of the sentence, it is not important for us to know who equipped the Neanderthals; it suffices to know that they were equipped and hence, by is not needed here.

Perhaps youve read somewhere that all passive usages have by word appearing in them; that is not the case. In fact, even in instances when we do mention who performed the action, usage of by is not mandatory. E.g.

The IPL match was played yesterday between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Deccan Chargers.

My question to you is the usage of 'appear(ed) as'... it isnt correct is it?
doesnt it sound awkward.
isnt 'appeared to' or 'appeared to be' the correct usage. pls do throw some light on this??
If OA is A, the OA is wrong. I would also like to know the source of the question in that case.

Also, subsequent to your post, I also did a Google search and found the following links which have comments from two other GMAT experts posted:

Erin on the patchwork of green fields that surround...

Stuart Kovinsky on many of them or many of whom

So, for the reasons I cited in my previous mail (among other reasons cited in the links above), rest assured B is the correct answer.

Thanks a lot for the clarification.
Could you help me by letting me know, when to use which conjunction.

Like when should i use who/which/whom/them.
im deeply confused in this front.
Thanks in advance.

A). 50 percent morality rate seems to be modifying periods and Colonial period, but -"as late as" is wrong, preposition "in" should have been between the two. Overall awkward sentence and hence discarded.

B).Again usage of colonial period's is wrong. "which" seems to be modifying "life expectancy" and this sentence says it improved over 50 percent morality rate which is illogical.

C). Subordinate clause is correctly begin by "Although" which shows contrast in main clause beginning with "as late as ". "during which" is correctly modifying time of colonial period and morality rate is clearly depicts by 50 percent. Hence correct.

D). D again is illogical.

E). Awkward.
