buddy, i too don't know what goes wrong with me during the exam......looks am in hurry to complete the verbal....... just b cool and answer the question, forget about the outcome........too much of thinking goes into, whether the answer will be correct or wrong.
even though u solve few questions, go through the reasons carefully....solving too many questions doesn't imply anything.
Q. That pollution harms the environment is self-evident; that immediate government action to combat it is merited by the situation is a matter of debate.
(A) that immediate government action to combat it is merited by the situation (B) if the situation merits immediate action by the government (C) whether to combat the situation is merited by immediate government action (D) that the situation merits immediate government action to combat it (E) whether the government should immediately combat it is merited by the situation
Q. That pollution harms the environment is self-evident; that immediate government action to combat it is merited by the situation is a matter of debate.
(A) that immediate government action to combat it is merited by the situation (pronoun "it" refers to what? since the use of semicolon provides both sentences to stand independently correct, in this case "it" has no antecedent.) (B) if the situation merits immediate action by the government (Use of if is inappropriate) (C) whether to combat the situation is merited by immediate government action (Ungramatical and awkward construction, changes the meaning. Also passive construction) (D) that the situation merits immediate government action to combat it (the only choice remains) (E) whether the government should immediately combat it is merited by the situation (again use of pronoun "it" is wrong no relevant anticedent. "it" refers to govt, ungramatical)
my answer and explanation above. kindly please post the OA. I am not still sure about my answer, damn i am not good at this... but above is my best guess.

You got the answer correct. It is D. Your approach in eliminating some of the options is also correct. Here is detailed explanation.
The sentence describes alternatives and would need whether instead of if. SO B is out. C wrongly relocates is merited by which implies that government action and not pollution is the problem, hence out. E changes the meaning of the sentence so it can be eliminated. Between A and D, the passive voice in A leaves D as the best answer.
The rhythms used by Emily Dickinson differed radically from those that had been used by poets during/for millennia in Western verse before hers.
Can someone please explain whether during or for should be used in the sentence above?
The rhythms used by Emily Dickinson differed radically from those that had been used by poets DURING millennia in western verse before hers...
DURING has to be used because millenia is a misspelling of the plural of millenium..thats 1000 years ! ....so time frame is also used as during and not for...
1) THE PEAKS OF A MOUNTAIN RANGE, acting like rocks in a streambed , produce ripples in the air flowing over them; the resulting flow pattern, with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, is known as "standing waves".
Above sentence as written is correct. It contains THEM twice, first them refers to Peaks, I could understand that. but second them here refers 'Crests and troughs'.
My confusion is why second them doesnot refer - Peaks. I can understand that second them will not refer to "rocks" or "ripples" because they are not used as subjects in the sentence.
Or in general when there are several nouns behind a pronoun, how do we decide pronoun refers to which noun in the sentence?

Pls help ...
hey IIM_pune, refer to the semicolon used in the setence, which means both sentences are independent and can be used separately. In that case first them refers to peaks and second refers to 'Crests and troughs'. Pronoun always refers to one noun, a golden rule. and yeah, i got issue essay first in my 1st attempt. it usually is like that. hope that helps....
and @m_varun, thanks a lot. it surely boosted my confidence...

As is preferable here so C, D and E out. B is out cause it says: (B) as an expert does, which may be used for purposes such as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan
Here is a modifier issue--- which is always used to refer the noun preceding it and not for the whole idea. we want to say computer does x,y and z but here the sentence says-the expert does x,y and z.

E is my take. Correct usage of "of" which explains explosion is of a type unknown rather than explosion is unknown. Hth
