B )in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers

C )partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics

Eliminate A and B easily

C. partly "because of".....parallel to "partly because of" but "of" is missing.

D by - passive , completely not parallel

E to acquire ... to provide parallel.
the because makes you feel it is not parallel, infinitive on both sides of and , nothing wrong, E is the best answer.

your ans is correct, but the reason for elimination of 'C' is misleading.

C : it looks the cross-breeding is the result of acquiring the characteristics. nothing wrong with parallelism.

Neither of the twins was the faster at the hundred metre race.
a was the faster at
b were the faster at
c was the faster when it came to the running of
d was the fastest at
e were the fastest at

Guys I got confused with usage of neither......
I think if we have "Neither of the twins", which means "no one out of the two" so I decided the answer "d".
But if I have a sentence:
Neither of the roommates believe the rumors floating around. ---> I think this is correct but here I assume it to be plural.

Could you plz help ?

yes right, its just one of the case of SUBJECT-VERB Agreement...

The pronouns neither and either are singular and require singular verbs even though they seem to be referring, in a sense, to two things.

EXCEPTION:
Neither and either take plural verbs when these pronouns are followed by a prepositional phrase beginning with of.
This is particularly true of interrogative constructions: "Have either of you two clowns read the assignment?" "Are either of you taking this seriously?"

But, this is a usual case...so the sentence would be
Neither of the twins was the fastest at hundred metre race.
Neither of the twins was the faster at the hundred metre race.
a was the faster at
b were the faster at
c was the faster when it came to the running of
d was the fastest at
e were the fastest at

neither of the two ; suggest that it is being talked about 1 at a time ; So , we should take it as singular . If it is only neither then , we have the singular form and if we have nor used along with neither then we take the plural form of the expression . Therefore , answer would be " was the fastest at "".
And for your second query ; as far as rumors is concerned we can use is as '' I do not believe the rumors floating around "" . Therefore , in my opinion it is a sungular usage .
hope it helps
