GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

What should be the appropriate answer??
As the housing affordability gap widens, middle-income families are especially hard-hit, and these families can no longer qualify to buy homes, and rising rental rates force them to use far more than the standard 25 percent of their incomes for housing, leaving them with no equity or tax write-offs to offset the expenditures.
1) and these families can no longer qualify to buy homes, and
2) since these families can no longer afford to buy homes, furthermore
3) for these families can no longer afford to buy homes, yet
4) and these families can no longer afford to buy homes; however,
5) and these families can no longer afford to buy homes, for

My Take - 2

"Furthermore" continues the central idea.

I will go with option B but worried with "since" in that sentence

Also, I have a doubt in verbal.

It is often better to try repairing an old car than to junk it.
(A) to try repairing an old car than to junk it.
(B) to repair an old car than to have it junked.
(C) to try repairing an old car than to junking it.
(D) to try and repair an old car than to junk it.
(E) to try to repair an old car than to junk it.

Which are the parallel verbs here. Is it 'try'or 'repair'? I thought it was 'try' that should be parallel to 'junk'. the solution says that repair is the verb. Can somebody explain?

Correct usage is :: to try to repair

Emphasis is on repairing and not trying ..

Regards!
I would rather go with B.
Explanation:
A: bla bla bla, and bla bla, and bla bla. IMO, this construction seems awkward.
C and D: yet/however are used to show contrast. But both the fragments, "families can no longer qualify to buy homes" and "rising rental rates force them" are talking about the same sad side of the story. No contrast...
E: Usage of ", for" is incorrect, indicating that families can not afford to buy houses because of rising rental rates, which is not what we intend to say.

Whats the OA..?

IMO B

nothing else makes sense .. it should either be A or B , but the construction in A is weird, so B is the obvious answer.

OA please !!

My Take - 2

"Furthermore" continues the central idea.

I think the sentence reflects causation here; the families are hard hit FOR they cant afford to buy homes.

Since doesnt reflect causation....

An adjective has 3 degrees- Positive, Comparative and Superlative.

When an adjectives describes only one noun or pronoun. Then the positive degree is being used. eg-The white hat fit her head perfectly.
When an adjectives compares two nouns. Then thecomparative degree is used, er is added to the end of the or adjectives being used.
eg- Tom is taller than his brother John.
Here the heights of two people Tom and John are being compared.
er is added to the adjective tall to show the comparative degree.
When an adjectives compares three or more nouns. Then the superlative degree is used.
eg- Tammy is the smartest girl in the class.
Here Tammy is being compared with all her classmates not just
two, so the superlative degree is used.
est is added to the end of the adjective to form the superlative degree.
Now, the degrees of word strong are-
Postive- Strong
Comparative- Stronger
Superlative- Strongest
We use more/ most to words like Beauty,Honesty, Intelligent, Carfeul, important.
its degrees are not like- beauty, beautier, beautiest!
it's-
Positive- beauty
Comparative- More Beautiful
Superlative- Most Beautiful.
and that's the reason, we don't have degrees of strong as -
positive- more strong
comparative- more strong/stronger
superlative- most strong/strongest!

So, in your sentences, only the second sentence- How can i get my english stronger in a short time?, is correct.

Hope that clears your query.

Neha

and C it is!

The only point of debate can be between E and C. Past perfect is not needed here as Leaching still exists as a method.
