alive is definitely wrong in this case.
In B 'all' doesnt seem to be properly modifying proceedings
I will go with answer E, because i understand from this one that some of the proceedings were not carried live but still a chunk was.

Please give the answer Jitendra.

Well,
first since used when you have a point in time. I mean...lets say 'i have been living in UK since 15th August 1947'... that's why I would reject all choices having since and a period of time instead of point of time..
so B) C) rejected
E) too wordy with 'it took less than... ' and '..then..'
D) first, its wordy with 'it took less than' .. also the tense mismatch (paralleeism in two parts of the sentence i.e
'It took less than 35 years from the release of African honeybees outside Sao Paulo, Brazil, had migrated as far north as Southermn Texas...
Also, the mismatch of ... from the release of after the release of...

so, A) fits best

Hi lizzy,

probably the sentence intends to convey that merchants' good will be transmitted and not their goods by merchants themselves. Hence last option.

Hi All,

Thanks for the response.

This question is from the scoretop verbal set no. 1.

Leaching, the recovery of copper from the drainage water of mines, as a method of the extraction of minerals, it was well established as early as the eighteenth century, but until about 25 years ago miners did not realize that bacteria take an active part in the process.

A.as a method of the extraction of minerals, it was well established
B.as a method of the extraction of minerals well established
C.was a well-established method of mineral extraction
D.was a well-established method of extracting mineral that was
E.had been a method of mineral extraction, well established

The answer given for this is C. But i still think E should be the right answer.

And...

2.
To develop more accurate population forecasts, demographers have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic determinants of fertility.

A.have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic
B.have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
C.would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
D.would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic
E.would have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economical

The answer given for this is E. Here I think it should be D. "than they do now" looks better than "than now".

So, my take is E and D.

Can someone explain the answers as it is given?

Even i think the answer to the first question should be E. i believe we cannot use 'was' because the method is still in use. Just that some more info was known recently.

And the answer to 2nd question should be D. Economical generally refers to 'being wise in spending'. Economic refers to economics principles. I believe economic fits in better here.

Any other views?

@Peak Says
Can you pls explain me why the answer is B. Isn't "as much as" the correct idiom.

Hi Peak,

Generally in GMAT english, present continous form of verb is not preferred unless it actually describes such a situation.

Try and avoid options with "-ing" unless the situation requires it.

This is a tip given in Kaplan and works i majority of the cases.

Regards,
Maunang

Thnks for the explanation and I do see tht plural issue in choice D but still "as much to" is also unidiomatic....how do we decide this...or I m missing somethg??

Can anybody tell me the difference between... "Instead of" and "Rather than"... I get confused in SC questions because of this idiom...

Hi,

"Rather than" and "instead of" can be interchanged in English

But ,I think the main difference between 'Rather than' and 'instead of' is,

"Rather than" is used to indicate a preference of one thing over the other. For ex:- I want a cake rather than a biscuit. ( Excuse me; because this is the only example that I can think of.... right now..). This means that I prefer a cake to a biscuit

PGuys, pls correct me if I am wrong.

Can Anybody help me in this:

because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone

in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone, tissues

I am not clear with the difference between "because" and "in that"...

I think the answer should be (E).

Options (B) and (C) use 'like' instead of 'such as' so they are out! (atleast i
think so) :)
Option (D) suggests that the composition itself is not normally found in the organ, so it is also out.
We are now left with (A) and (E). The repetition of 'tissues' in (E) though wordy is necessary because without it, we would not know whether tooth/bone or tissues are not normally found.
So I would go for (E)
