I got both of these wrong in the first shot, but upon re-reading the answers, here is my understanding:

1) A - wrong comparisions - two times
- pay Vs blue-collar-workers
- blue-collar-workers Vs ratio
C, D, E - can be easily figured out to be wrong
- all wrong comparisions
B - all correct comparisions

The only thing which bothers me in B is "on average" -- should it not be "on an average"?

2) A - correct
B - growing as big as 30 feet long - wrong usage
C - this seems odd when read for the 2nd time:
- The 32 species ...., include ....killer whale, growing upto 30-feet-long ....
-- seems like growth of 32 species is being talked about
D -grow as big as 30 feet long - wrong usage
E - un-needed "it"

Please help with your comments.

I am not sure but doesn't it make sense to post the source of questions as well?

....Well, I need to really wrack my head to get to an explanation....but i'll..really post explanation for these 2...
d2rockstar Says
first two are correct...post the explanations pls

Please post all the correct answers.

I eliminated D and E for the missing 'that'. A review indicates that....
In C, '42 times their pay'...'their' is ambiguous as to what it is referring to, blue collar workers or CEO's?
In A and D, its wrong comparison. CEO's pay is compared to blue collar workers - incorrect.
In E, earning 419 time....compared to ratio of 42 times - incorrect comparison of earning to ratio.
In B, with proper placement of all modifiers, it makes complete sense.
CEO's now earn x times the pay of blue collar workers - correct comparison.
419 times....., a ratio that compares to 42 times... - correct comparison.

OA is E.
I would still prefer B over E as in E the modifier is too far placed of from the subject. And B conveys the meaning properly with modifier placed appropriately.

ok. This is what I understood:

1) ratio refers to (pay of CEO)/(pay of blue collar workers)

2) killer whale is as big as the blue whale - this is correct
killer whale is as big as 30 feet long --- incorrect -- check the elements of comparision here. It seems we are comparing killer whale with "30 feet long". "30 feet long" what??

It it was "killer whale is as big as the 30 feet long blue whale" -- this made some sense, though I need to give a second thought whether it is correct on GMAT.

E) killer whale ...which ....and is famous for ...
I think usage of "it" is unnecessary here. "it" creates an independent clause, which is not needed.

Let me know if you differ.
1. He works hard, (as/like) his father does.
2. He works hard (as/like) his father.
3. He treats his students (as/like) friends.
4. He treats his students (as/like) animals.

"As" is used to compare 2 clauses (A clause is a sentence containing a verb)
"like" is used to compare 2 nouns/noun phrases.

Google for "As vs Like in GMAT" and you'll get some really good links.
There is one on Manhattan Forum which I liked (I'm not sure if I can post it here)
