I would recommend that you put your explanation why an option is wrong. This will help others to understand your reasoning.

answer is D. See my earlier post for explanation.

E - 'That the supply of oil is finite' does not seem to be the right fit for a subject of the sentence.

Could you please explain...why so?

The supply of oil being finite has become an economical and political consideration of the first magnitude for all modern industrial nations.
(A) The supply of oil being finite has become an economical
(B) The finite supply of oil has become an economical
(C) That the supply of oil is finite has become an economical

Hello Amit,

First of all see the difference beyween economic and economical. The question demands for parallelism between economical and political. So i can reject D and E.

A: - unnecessary use of being amking it awkward.
B: - Correct
C: - Awkward

let me know the right answer.
The supply of oil being finite has become an economical and political consideration of the first magnitude for all modern industrial nations.
(A) The supply of oil being finite has become an economical
(B) The finite supply of oil has become an economical
(C) That the supply of oil is finite has become an economical
(D) The supply of oil being finite has become an economic
(E) That the supply of oil is finite has become an economic

I would see these -
1) Parallelism - economical and political => D, E ruled out
2) As far as I know, avoid being on GMAT => A ruled out
3) Down to B and C

B looks to be more simple and less wordy than C

Also in C, "that" in the starting would tend to make a subordinate clause - which I think is not needed here.

I'll choose B.

Whats the correct answer?

My answer-B
Remember-Being is almost always wrong in GMAT.

1.A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

(A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

(B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a stars mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

(D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole

Without looking into the choices:

This sentence looks good. Overall I cant find any mistake. After a neutron star a coma might not be needed.
After it passes through a red giant stage : it is not clear for which it is being used. Whether it is used for star or for black hole.
Depending on mass : depending on which mass.stars mass or black holes mass.

A. This more or less looks ok apart from the fact mentioned above.
B. This makes the sentence more clear and pristine. Here it is clear that star is passing the red giant stage. Depending on mass is used for star.
C. This sentence becomes a bit awkward. Unnecessary changes.
D. After passing through the red giant stage: the subject for this is not clear.
E. it is not clear. For which noun it is used. This makes the sentence awkward.

I think B is the answer.

2.A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care.

(A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle,
(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,

(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,

Without looking into the choices:

Shouldnt it be which has been proved or which is proved to be useful

After looking into choices:
  1. it should be which has been proved or which is proved to be . From the sentence it looks as if the substance is cultivated in china.
  2. this confuses the reader. Awkward.
  3. A Madagascar It should be The Madagascar.
  4. That is confusing..what is cultivated is not clear.
  5. This sentence is clear and it depicts the meaning of the whole sentence.

I think E is the answer.
My answer-B
Remember-Being is almost always wrong in GMAT.

B is certainly not right because economical means cheap. It should be economic and economical. For e.g. It is right to say the economic conditions of a country but it not right if you economical conditions of a country.

First of all thanks a lot to all the guys who have responded to it..

I think that the correct answer seem to be the one with "BEING"...& with "Economic" surprise, surprise...i.e. 'D'.

first of all, lets get clear about the subject of this sentence: I don't knwo what you guys thi nk but the subject of sentence is: "The supply of oil being finite" i.e. a phenomenon. now what it has caused is being talked in the complete sentence..
1. Why not economical...
Answer lies when you question this sentence:
has the phenomenon caused considerations which are economical? / it has caused the consideration for economy?
offcourse its the later one, hence - Economic is the choice
2. The supply of oil HAS/IS/BEING , what to choose?
look at what this shift has caused..."HAS become an economical and political consideration", it means this phenomenon has completed - perfect tense...and oil supply caused it so something which can't be gaurenteed to continue ..hence the option with..IS Ruled out...

I concede to D..Though was dying to go for E...

Please post your thoughts too..

I just wanted to add one more point. Economical and political considerations does not seem to be parallel as well because of the meaning of the word 'Economical'
B is certainly not right because economical means cheap. It should be economic and economical. For e.g. It is right to say the economic conditions of a country but it not right if you economical conditions of a country.

Ya buddy.. i got he difference...solved it in a hurry..

I am not sure if I understand this.

1) If you say "supply of oil being finite" --> doesn't this pose two questions:
i) whether the supply is finite
ii) or oil is finite

2) Can a phenomena not cause economical considerations? I guess it can?
Still thinking ...

I'd appreciate if someone offers a better explanation.

A phenomena can cause economical consideration. But think this way.

"Economical and political consideration". Does not sound parallel and it distorts the meaning. So we can eliminate A, B and C because it is not parallel.
