Guys!!
Please give a shot to them as well!!!!
I got these Q from internet (when ETS used to conduct GMAT). I have the ready OA but not explained solutions:
1. Mr. Kramer, the losing candidate in a two-candidate election, received 942,568 votes, which was exactly 40 percent of all the votes cast. Approximately what percent of the remaining votes would he need to have received in order to have won at least 50 percent of all the votes cast?
(A) 10%
(B) 12%
(C) 15%
(D) 17%
(E) 20%
Q2. If the average (arithmetic mean) of 5 positive temperatures is x degrees Fahrenheit, then the sum of the 3 greatest of these temperatures, in degrees Fahrenheit, could be
(A) 6x
(B) 4x
(C) 35x
(D) 23x
(E) 53x
Thanks & Regards

My take for the above PS is :
1. D
2. A

Hi Deepak,
First one is correct. How did you reach at this?
For second, I will post OA, when some more puys come up.
1) A square countertop has a square tile inlay in the cente, leaving an untiled stripof uniform width around the tile. If the ratio of the tiled area to the untiled area is 25 to 39, which of the following could be the width in inches of the strip?
a) 1.5
b) 3
c) 4.5
a) a only
b) b only
c) a and b only
d) a and c only
e) a, b and c
One of the question from the previous post.

There are 2 methods to do this problem:
Method 1:
========
Kramer received 942,568 votes which constitutes 40% of the total voters.So total no.of voters = 2356420.He has to get atleast 50% of the votes.So he has to get 1178210 votes.Remaining votes he has to get to reach the 50% mark is 1178210-942568 = 235642 votes.
No.of votes Kramer dint receive = 60% of total votes = 1413852
So the remaining votes(235642) he has to get is 17% of the 1413852 votes he dint receive.
Method 2:
========
Let assume the total no.of votes as x
He recvd 40% of x
Total votes he dint receive = 60% of x
He has to get 50% of x.So he needs to add 10% of x.
Remaining percentage = 10x/60x * 100 = 16.67%.

"for the number of digit :
How many integers between 324,700 and 458,600 have tens digit 1 and units digit 3:
This looks good, the other way I thought to be sure
1. 458000 and 325000 ; hence 458 - 325 = 133 and since 10 13s in each thousand : This gets you 1330
2. 458000 to 4586000 => Has 6 13's
3. 324700 3257000 => Has 3 13's
That makes it 1339

Good!!!
The OA for second one is "B"
1) A square countertop has a square tile inlay in the cente, leaving an untiled stripof uniform width around the tile. If the ratio of the tiled area to the untiled area is 25 to 39, which of the following could be the width in inches of the strip?

b) b only
c) a and b only
d) a and c only
e) a, b and c
One of the question from the previous post.
ANS = e) a, b and c
Tiled Area/Total Area= 25/(25+39) = 25/64
So, Tile Length/Total Length= sqrt(25/64)=5/8
Note that above two sides are in ratio, lets call them 5x & 8x.
So, width of strip =(8x-5x)/2=1.5x
Therefore, width=multiples of 1.5 1.e. 1.5,3,4.5
Hi Guys,
Can someone please help me with the attached question ?
Q.The points R, T, and U lie on a circle that has radius 4. If the length of arc RTU is 4Pi/3 ,what is the length of line segment RU?
A.4/3
B.8/3
C.3
D.4
E.6
I believe answer should be 4 but in earlier posi, it is 8/3?
Unregisteredpag SaysI believe answer should be 4 but in earlier posi, it is 8/3?
Lets try this way -
the circumference of the cir is 2pi r = 8 pi...so half of this is 4pi
Now the segment is 4pi/3...so the arc RTU is 1/3 of half the circumference.
=> arc will make angle of 60 degress at the center.
Now, OR and OU are equal since both = r (O is the center on the circle)
=> triangle ORU is equilateral ..so RU should be 4.

What do you thing guys ?

1. At a technology consulting firm with x computers, all of which are desktops or laptops, 30% are laptops; if 80% of the total number of computers have more than 1GB of RAM and 10% of the computers with less than 1GB of RAM are laptops (and no computers have exactly 1GM of RAM), approximately what percent of the desktops have more than 1GB of RAM?

If x = 100 then laptos = 30 and desktop = 70
80 have more then 1 GB RAM, so 20 have less then 1 GB.
10% of 20 are laptops i.e 2.
So, desktops with less than 1 GB are 20 - 2 = 18
% of Desktops with more than 1 GB ram = (52) 100 /70
approx 75%
What do u say Ravi ?
Taking 100 as base
30 : 70 is the laptop and desktop ratio
80:20 is the 2gb:512mb
10% of 20 is 2 => 2 laptops have 512mb and 18 desktop has 512 mb
Thant makes => 52/70 is 74.26%

Yes. The Answer is 75%.
Though, it was an easy one, some people might get hoodwinked by that "52%" !!! It is NOT.
It is infact, 52/70 = 75% (approx.)
@Nipunbans : Seriously clueless, how you got 60%

One of the question from the previous post.
Two ways to solve this problem
1. Long Way : 25:39 is good as 25:64
now i.e. 5:8 = difference 3 option b is there now since 3 is here half of that is 1.5 so that makes in option a. Now 1.5 *3 times which is again 4.5 is also there
2. ShortCut : Since all the numbers are rational numbers here i.e 4.5 3 1.5 etc and all 1.5 is a common multiple hence all the options are possible
Hi Guys,
Can someone please help me with the attached question ?
For 1st: c) 50 + I/40
Before being simplified, the instructions for computing income tax in County R were to add 2 percent of one's annual income to the average of 100 units of Country R's currency and 1 percent of ones annual income. Which of the following represents the simplified formula for computing the income tax, in Country R's currency, for a person in the country whose annual income is I ?
>> C = 50 + I/40.
2% of I + (100+1% of I)/2 simplify this.
Second: I don't understand the question. What is containing the median for a score 73?
Third: Answer - A Call the center Z. Steps:
a) Angle PZO = 70. (twice as subtended on the arc by PO).
b) Since these are parallel lines Angle RPQ = 35. So angle QOR is also 35 as it is subtended angle of the same arc QR.
c) From B, angle QZR is 70 (twice as subtended on the arc by QR).
d) So angle PZQ = 180 - 70 - 70 = 40. = 2*pi/9
e) So minor arc PQ = r*angle = 9 * 2*pi/9 = 2pi
Thank you.

Yeah!! silly mistake.. I took that 10% to be 10 instead of 2.. didn't red the Q carefully..
is it statement 1 alone is not sufficient and 2 alone sufficient??
