professionalguy Says
He guys i have a basic query wrt Bold Face CR Questions. Can we have answer option, stating one of the bold face statement as "assumption of the argument",as the correct answer. Because assumption is supposed to be unstated premise so how it can be present in the argument ?

Yes, you are right. If you call something an assumption then you cannot mention it in the passage. It's got to be unstated.
the second statement is a clear evidence for the conclusion . so answer should be out of A,B,C . now the first statement is also an evidence but it needs to be analysed to confirm what the conclusion is . so option B says that it is an evidence, interpetation of which gives blah blah ...
plz correct me if am wrong :splat:
answer B

What's the conclusion that you have selected???
Fashion Executive: Last year, our company had $5 million in revenue, and was featured in 8 major articles in the fashion press. This year, our companys revenue has practically quadrupled, so we should expect to be featured in at least 20 major articles in the fashion press.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the fashion executives reasoning in the above argument?

A)A competing fashion line was featured more often in the fashion press after its revenues increased.

b)Five years ago, the companys revenue was less than $1 million, and the company was not featured in any major articles in the fashion press.

c)The companys revenue nearly quadrupled because of the introduction of a fashion line geared for sale in the European fashion capital of Milan; however, most of the fashion press is headquartered domestically in New York.

d)A major automaker in the region was the subject of twice as many features in auto industry press when the automaker filed for bankruptcy.

e)The companys revenue increased dramatically because of the introduction of lower-priced lines sold in nationwide discount chains, greatly reducing the brands cachet among fashion journalists.

Contender options C & E. C says the fashion press are HQ in NY but no mention about the coverage. So,I would go with option E

would go with (D)...

Though (C) and (E) are close too...but would rule them out:-
(C) he company's revenue nearly quadrupled because of the introduction of a fashion line geared for sale in the European fashion capital of Milan; however, most of the fashion press is headquartered domestically in New York.
The coverage in the magazine cannot be attributed to the location of press, as international events of significance might be covered with more prominence.

(E)The company's revenue increased dramatically because of the introduction of lower-priced lines sold in nationwide discount chains, greatly reducing the brand's cachet among fashion journalists.
What if despite being low priced they were high in fashion/substance? We cannot say for sure sure that lower priced stuffs will be bad. Also Lower priced does not mean extremely cheap, might be they are priced lower than previous stuffs of theirs but are still more expensive than their competitors' stuffs

Why according to me (D) fits the bill is because its trying to say that simply increase in revenue cannot be the basis for more coverage, more coverage had also happened when an automaker company went bankrupt(i.e in opposite direction to the direction of revenues of this company).

Correct me if I was wrong in my logic...

is it d,
bcos first fact is explaind ,nd d latter is giving d idea of how first cndition wil b chngd...

not e) bcos whatever b d personal opinions of fashion journalists abt d brand ,, it should not affect no.of articles as per d reasoning of d arguement.
reasoning(as per my view)- featuring articles is proportional 2 revenue generaed.
as per d reasoning ans shud b (d)
bcos it opposes d corollary of d reasoning.
Many institutions of higher education suffer declining enrollments during periods of economic slowdown. At two-year community colleges, however, enrollment figures boom during these periods when many people have less money and there is more competition for jobs.

Each of the following, if true, helps to explain the enrollment increases in two-year community colleges described above EXCEPT:
(A) During periods of economic slowdown, two-year community colleges are more likely than four-year
colleges to prepare their students for the jobs that are still available.
(B) During periods of economic prosperity, graduates of two-year community colleges often continue their studies at four-year colleges.
(C) Tuition at most two-year community colleges is a fraction of that at four-year colleges.
(D) Two-year community colleges devote more resources than do other colleges to attracting those students especially affected by economic slowdowns.
(E) Students at two-year community colleges, but not those at most four-year colleges, can control the cost of their studies by choosing the number of courses they take each term.

I will choose option B
In countries where automobile insurance includes compensation
for whiplash injuries sustained in automobile accidents, reports of
having suffered such injuries are twice as frequent as they are in
countries where whiplash is not covered. Some commentators
have argued, correctly, that since there is presently no
objective test for whiplash
, spurious reports of whiplash
injuries cannotbe readily identified. These commentators are,
however, wrong to draw the further conclusion that in the
countries with the higherrates of reported whiplash injuries, half of
the reported cases are spurious
: clearly, in countires where
automobile insurance doesnot include compensation for whiplash,
people often have little incentive to report whiplash injuries that
they actually have suffered.

In the argument given, the two boldfaced portions play which of the
following roles?

A: The first is evidence that has been used to support a conclusion
that the arguemnt criticizes; the second is that conclusion
B: The first is evidence that has been used to support a conclusion
that the arguemnt criticizes; the second is the position that the
argument defends
C: The first is a claim that has been used to support a conclusion
that the argument accepts; the second is the position that the a
rgument defends
D: The first is an intermediate conclusion that has been used to
support a conclusion that the argument defends; the second is
the position that the argument opposes.
E: The first presents a claim that is disputed in the argument; the
second is a conclusion that has been drawn on the basis of that
claim.

d first portion clearly comes under d category of evidence, which is supporting d second portion which is finally criticizd by d arguement...

so its awnser shud b (a).

i think ption (b) possess sme wierdness within itself.
all d oder ptions ,if tru wil increase d enrollmnts but d second one iz not 8 all being d cauz of increment in enrollments...

I will go with option A
The amount of energy used by a typical household in the northeastern United States is more than twice that used by a comparable household in the southeast, southwest, and west coast regions of the country. The difference is explained by the heating requirements of homes in the northeast. In general air conditioners used to cool homes are much cheaper to operate than heating systems. Up to 65% of the total energy usage of a household in the northeastern U.S. is required to heat the home through the winter: only 5% is needed for air conditioning throughout the whole summer. However, global warming is changing the equation. Winters in the northeast are getting warmer, requiring less heat per day and shortening the heating season. Temperatures across the U.S. are getting hotter so that the cost of cooling homes is rising. In years to come the energy requirements across the country will be far more uniform.

A) The first is a subsidiary conclusion of the argument that is used as a premise to support the main conclusion; the second is a fact that directly contradicts the first.

B) The first is a paradox that must be resolved later in the argument; the second is the key evidence used to resolve that paradox.

C) The first is a fact that is directly contradicted later in the argument; the second is the evidence used for that contradiction.

D) The first is a fact that the argument explains and then predicts will not hold true over time; the second is used as evidence that the first fact will change.

E) The first is a phenomenon that contributes to the explanation of another phenomenon discussed later in the argument; the second is the phenomenon that the argument explains.

d first is a fact and d scnd 1 is d evi... so wid this we hve 2 ptions left (C) and(D)
now in d middle of d arguement there is a xplanation of d first portion
so it shud b (d)..

There is little point in looking to artists for insights into political issues. Most of them hold political views that are less insightful than those of any reasonably well-educated person who is not an artist. Indeed, when taken as a whole, the statements made by artists, including those considered great, indicate that artistic talent and political insight are rarely found together.
Which one of the following can be inferred from the passage?

(A) There are no artists who have insights into political issues.
(B) A thorough education in art makers a person reasonably well educated.
(C) Every reasonably well-educated person who is not an artist has more insight into political issues than any artist.
(D) Politicians rarely have any artistic talent.
(E) Some artists are no less politically insightful than some reasonably well-educated persons who are not artists

The answer given is E and i chose C. Please can someone clarify.

P.S. Sorry if this seems to be pretty easy, but i have just now started to prepare n not a frequent user of pagalguy.

Political Analyst: After the Soviet Union collapsed, some hoped that freedom would encourage Russians to multiply, but as a result of dislocation and insecurity, the Russian population continues to dwindle at the rate of 700,000 a year. The government proposes to address the problem with a wide range of financial incentives, along with investments in improved health care, road safety and the like. These are positive measures, but they have been tried before, to little avail. A better plan to reverse the population decline is to improve the country's governance in both the public and the private sphere. If a greater part of the population participated in important decisions and shared in the country's wealth, then larger families would result. In addition, if corruption and greed among the elite were curbed, public health would improve and average life expectancy would increase.

The two boldfaced statements serve what function in the argument above?

a) The first is the main point of the analyst's argument; the second is a premise that supports the the first.
b) The first is a premise that undermines an alternative to the analyst's proposal; the second is a premise that supports the analyst's main claim.
c) The first is a premise that contradicts the main point made by the analyst; the second is the main point of the argument.
d)The first is a premise that supports a proposal; the second is that proposal.
e) The first is a conclusion that the argument endorses; the second is a premise that opposes that conclusion.

Planners in City X noticed that many of the trees in the city were dying because of exposure to increased levels of air and water pollution. A study they commissioned revealed that sycamore trees actually thrive in environments with elevated levels of carbon monoxide, the main pollutant emitted by automobiles. In order to reverse the trend of dying trees, the city adopted a policy to replace all sick trees with sycamore trees.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the logic employed by the city planners?

a) In the forest, oak trees live an average of 70 years while sycamore trees only live for an average of 50 years.
b) Automobile manufacturers are developing newer car models that emit significantly fewer pollutants.
c) A survey by Urban Forests found that the sycamore is the most common tree in American cities.
d) The city recently installed low exhaust buses for its public transportation system.
e) Sycamore trees are extremely sensitive to sulfur dioxide, the main component of acid rain

College professor: College students do not write nearly as well as they used to. Almost all of the papers that my students have done for me this year have been poorly written and ungrammatical.
Which one of the following is the most serious weakness in the argument made by the professor?
(A) It requires confirmation that the change in the professor's students is representative of a change among college students in general.
(B) It offers no proof to the effect that the professor is an accurate judge of writing ability.
(C) It does not take into account the possibility that the professor is a poor teacher.
(D) It fails to present contrary evidence.
(E) It fails to define its terms sufficiently.

BRIDGE THE GAP!

Professor is making a big jump here. He gives a specific example about his students and goes ahead to generalize that college students do not write nearly as well as they used to.

So, our job is to find the option which will help us connect the dots here. i.e.

"OPTION A" is the best choice here. We definately need some confirmation a specific example (professor's students) can be used to represent a general case (college students)

I am down to choice C and E, but not able to eliminate any one of them.

E is very close choice but my confusion is that there is no mention of Sulfur dioxide or acid rain in the question. How can we deduce such information?

Film critic: As computer technology continues to become more sophisticated, movies increasingly exchange a cohesive and satisfying storyline for a series of improbable events designed to showcase special effects. The recent film Space Battle is a prime example of this trend. The main characters are not even properly introduced before the first computer-generated chaos engulfs the screen. Then the movie is off and running from one planet to the next with no theme except impossible action sequences and sarcastic one-liners. It is as if a new sport appeared with no consistent rules, no familiar players, and no laws of physics, not even gravity.

The portions on the text in boldface play which of the following roles?

A) The first is a generalization for which a specific example will be given; The second is an analogy comparing the situation being discussed with another that may be more familiar.

B) The first is a general principle that is contradicted in the following example; The second is a prediction of a future trend.

C) The first is an example that will be used to derive a general principle; The second is a counterexample used to weaken the general principle.

D) The first is a prediction of a future trend for which an illustration is provided; The second is an analogy used to strengthen the likelihood of the prediction.

E) The first is a premise used to support the main conclusion of the argument; The second is the main conclusion of the argument.

is it?

okay for d first part which says dat first portion is prediction(not a generalization)
but prblm is wid d second portion which doesnt seem to power d prediction.
hw plz explain??
