Cognizant bhai, check this post: Evaluate
A Kaplan instructor is the one who has provided a very simple explanation.
And your explanation is not decipherable at all, I could not understand anything even after reading your post 2-3 times. Can you explain from your own logic why A should be correct. Let us forget GMAC and Kaplan, let plain logic be the rule here.
WRONG!!!! -- I had to search for sources after I saw your version of OA...
C is Plain WRONG.
Answer is A.
dude though answer A is mentioned but according to standard GMAC protocl this would be falsified logic why at all i would assume probability of collision to be considered to be true due to accidents what if other factors lead to accident.prove your point if other factors wouldn't in any way be possible to go about accidents.having discussed with kaplan mentors and according to GMAC standrads optiion C resembles the logic required for evaluvation.
sausi007 bhai--- I posted the reason why A should be correct.. I think you agree with my point that option C CANNOT be the ANSWER.
cognizant_81: Dost -- Let's revise the concept of probability here--- What if the probability that an automobile driver will be involved in a collision due to brake failure is 1 in 1 million?-- this way we can say that the new security feature is NOT required.. because -- the risk of serious injury from malfunction of the new safety feature is one out of 10,000-- hence it is irrelavant to have this feature. We are safer without it.
And, if the probability of accidents due to brake failure is 1 in 100 then definately we can say 'YES the new security system is required' because it is decreasing the probability to 1 in 10,000. SAFE to have it.
If you observe -- I am using the statement to evaluate the conclusion made in the Question stem. Hence, the correct option is A. option C is wrong because it is talking about things which are NOT in our SCOPE of discussion.
and I posted the google books link-- it will redirect you to the page from where this question is picked!! THE ORIGINAL SOURCE
@saketh
For every 100 automobile drivers who are involved in a collision due to brake failure, 1 will be seriously injured. A new safety feature exists that is nearly 100 percent successful in preventing collisions due to brake failure. Because the risk of serious injury from malfunction of the new safety feature is one out of 10,000, it is clearly safer for automobile drivers to have this new safety feature installed than not.
Which of the following would it be most helpful to know in order to evaluate the argument?
(A) The probability that an automobile driver will be involved in a collision due to brake failure yes this is one of the factor for evaluating the arguement which is quite apparent but not the only one a common trap for GMAt test takers
(C) The number of automobile collisions that occur for reasons other than brake failure if there are other reasons then the base of arguement falls apart you may think this Q as weakining the arguement so which one weakens the most in other words that obviously this is the basis to be known to evaluavate arguement.
dude can you please explain why c is right rather than saying that the argument falls apart, I am not able to understand the logic.
Lets just say the number of collisions due to other reasons of collisions other than break failure is 1/100/1000/100000, how can I use this information to say that installing new feature which only helps avoiding collisions during a break failure is safer than not ?
I am not questioning the OA or anything but trying to see the logic which may help me on D-day
thanks
I think its D..is it ?
hi puys,
can any one tell me gud book for verbal part?
hi puys,
can any one tell me gud book for verbal part?
You can refer to Manhattan Sentence Correction Book... It's considered as the best book in the market. For RC, I think you can refer to Official guide 12th edition and then move to Kaplan 800 for more practice.
Also you can refer to the Beatthegmat.com. It is also a very good forum for all GMAT aspirants. There you will find lots and lots of questions which are posted by the students.
PS: Please do not ask for soft copies (I am assuming that request is coming in the next post :D), it's against the PG rules to ask for Copyright material.
These books will only cost 2K in total. I think it's a small price as compared to the overall cost of MBA π
A computer crash has occurred when a computer's central processing unit 'freezes up' and cannot respond to further commands or perform additional functions. In the split second during a computer crash, however, certain functions are still possible. When cindy's micron 401 computer crashed, she suspected it was due to an electrical power surge to the computer. The micron 401 computer usually does not work fast enough during a crash to produce an error message on the screen before the computer 'freezes'. However an error message can be triggered by an electrical power surge to the computer. Whenever a micron 401 computer crashes without producing an error message on the screen, the computer's hard drive is damaged. Upon restarting her computer, cindy determined its hard drive was not damaged.
Which one of the following must be true on basis of the information above ?
(A) If the micron 401's processor worked faster during the crash, the computer 's hard drive would have been damaged.
(B) The micron 401's hard drive is specially suited to withstand computer crashes.
(c) If the the micron 401's crash was not due to an electrical power surge, the computer's processor worked unusually fast during the crash.
(D) The micron 401 computer is built to withstand electrical power surges.
(E) If an error message appeared on the screen of the micron 401, it did so only after computer crashed
Any clue about this one ??
I am a little confused between B and C; inclined towards C though

I must agree that this one is a tough question.. What is the source of this question (Please don't give me LSAT name for this)
I am confused between option C and option D. Option B can be simply ruled out because we cannot infer that "hard drive is specially suited"
Option A -- talks just the opposite.. It is given in the question that if the processor workes faster an error message is produced.
option E can also be ruled out because the scenario described is not possible - it is given that the error message is produced during the crash and not after the crash.
I will choose option D. Reason --
Events given are:- Hard Drive not damaged --> possible reason (Error message was displayed) -- > But the processor of micron 401 PC is not ususally fast, so this can be ruled out that the processor worked unusually fast during the crash.. --> the only possibility that seems possible is that there was an ELECTRONIC SURGE (it is given that error message can be produced via Electronic surge) ---> this means that micron 401 is build to withstand ELECTRONIC SURGE because even after the crash, the Hard Drive was safe..
Please let me know what is the official answer. I will not be surprised if I am wrong because this question is way too tricky.
I too could not find the OA.
See I got this question in my email through a friend, but I googled and this Question is there on Gmatclub as well. I dont know the source. Also I do not know the OA, though your solution does seem correct, now that I am going through it.
In a nutshell, it can still be either C or D.

my take is in bold!!
We now have almost all the possible answers;) .If anybody here has an account on gmatclub ?Then maybe we can get some insights
dude one small question... how can we know that the computer crashed due to electrical surge only, the lady just suspected that the crash was due to electrical surge
I too could not find the OA.
See I got this question in my email through a friend, but I googled and this Question is there on Gmatclub as well. I dont know the source. Also I do not know the OA, though your solution does seem correct, now that I am going through it.

I posted the similar solution in GMAT club as well.. See it by the name of "Saketkhard" -- I am still waiting to see a reply in that forum as well.
Request -- always find the source of the question before attempting it. It is highly possible that this question is from LSAT paper which is more difficult as compared to GMAT. So, we should rather focus on doing questions purely related to GMAT first. LSAT question can be done later.
I am forwarding this question to experts for their comments. let's wait till then..
kandulab Saysdude one small question... how can we know that the computer crashed due to electrical surge only, the lady just suspected that the crash was due to electrical surge
Hi- See the reasoning i posted in my 3rd last post. Let me know if you find a flaw in that...
Okay will do so in the future,
but if you also posted the Question on Gmatclub, was the source of your similar Question LSAT??

I think you missed my point.. I posted the SOLUTION and NOT the question.
Which of the following best completes the passage below?
The computer industry's estimate that it loses millions of dollars when users illegally copy programs without
paying for them is greatly exaggerated. Most of the illegal copying is done by people with no serious interest in
the programs. Thus, the loss to the industry is quite small, because .
(A) many users who illegally copy programs never find any use for them
(B) most people who illegally copy programs would not purchase them even if purchasing them were the only
way to obtain them
(C) even if the computer industry received all the revenue it claims to be losing, it would still be experiencing
financial difficulties
(D) the total market value of all illegal copies is low in comparison to the total revenue of the computer
industry
(E) the number of programs that are frequently copied illegally is low in comparison to the number of
programs available for sale
Reasons please, and tell me if this is easy, moderate or a tough one..:)
The Eurasian ruffe, a fi sh species inadvertently introduced into North America's Great Lakes in recent years,
feeds on the eggs of lake whitefi sh, a native species, thus threatening the lakes' natural ecosystem. To help
track the ruffe's spread, government agencies have produced wallet-sized cards about the ruffe. The cards
contain pictures of the ruffe and explain the danger they pose; the cards also request anglers to report any ruffe
they catch.
Which of the following, if true, would provide most support for the prediction that the agencies' action will have
its intended effect?
(A) The ruffe has spiny fi ns that make it unattractive as prey.
(B) Ruffe generally feed at night, but most recreational fi shing on the Great Lakes is done during daytime hours.
(C) Most people who fi sh recreationally on the Great Lakes are interested in the preservation of the lake

(D) The ruffe is one of several nonnative species in the Great Lakes whose existence threatens the survival of

(E) The bait that most people use when fi shing for whitefi sh on the Great Lakes is not attractive to ruffe.

Hi,
IMO -- Option B
Reason:- (I will paste the option first and then my reasoning)
OPTION A: many users who illegally copy programs never find any use for them -- This option can be ruled out because the COM industry will still be losing money due to illegal download, the money which the COM industry could have earned if the softwares were purchased legally.
OPTION C: even if the computer industry received all the revenue it claims to be losing, it would still be experiencing
financial difficulties -- out of scope. we are not discussing financial difficulties
OPTION D: the total market value of all illegal copies is low in comparison to the total revenue of the computer industry -- Even if the total valueof illegal copies is low, we have no idea about the actual amount.. Even if it is low, the moeny could well be in Millions.
OPTION E: the number of programs that are frequently copied illegally is low in comparison to the number of programs available for sale -- same as option D. Even if the total number is less, the total amount cannot be predicted here. Hence no comments can be made about the estimation made by the COM industry.
OPTION B -- THE CORRECT ANSWER.
Rightly points out that even if the only source to acquire those softwares was through legal purchase, companies would still not be getting that money. Reason -- the likelyhood of people, doing illegal downlaod, purchasing those softwares will be very less. Hence NO GAIN for the COM industry afterall.
I will rate this as question of "MEDIUM DIFFICULTY LEVEL"
The Eurasian ruffe, a fish species inadvertently introduced into North Americas Great Lakes in recent years,
feeds on the eggs of lake white fish, a native species, thus threatening the lakes natural ecosystem. To help track the ruffes spread, government agencies have produced wallet-sized cards about the ruffe. The cards
contain pictures of the ruffe and explain the danger they pose; the cards also request anglers to report any ruffe they catch.
Which of the following, if true, would provide most support for the prediction that the agencies action will have its intended effect?
(A) The ruffe has spiny fins that make it unattractive as prey. --Irrelevant for this question. We got nothing to do with the beauty of the fish. (it should taste better π .. lol)
(B) Ruffe generally feed at night, but most recreational fishing on the Great Lakes is done during daytime hours. -- Weakning statement -- we need an option which will strengthen the question stem. This is just the opposite
(C) Most people who fish recreationally on the Great Lakes are interested in the preservation of the lake white fish because it is a highly prized game fish. - THIS IS THE CORRECT CHOICE. This option clearly supports the author's reasoning by providing a supportive reason. Since, People are interested in the preservation of the lake, they will defiantely help in the cause.
(D) The ruffe is one of several nonnative species in the Great Lakes whose existence threatens the survival of lake white fish populations there. -- Another weakning statement. This tells us that there are already so many nonnative species in the lake. The people will ignore RUFFE just like other species.
(E) The bait that most people use when fishing for white fish on the Great Lakes is not attractive to ruffe. -- Again a weakning statment. If the bait is not attracting Ruffe then the fish will not be caught anyway. Hence, the measures will not be effective.
RATING-- MEDIUM .
Reasons please, and tell me if this is easy, moderate or a tough one..
FOR A CHANGE --- I am commenting inline in RED COLOR π
IMO "OPTION C"

One more thing-- Please continue posting new questions. they are of great help for all of us. :)
