GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

Psychologist: Some astrologers claim that our horoscopes completely determine our personalities, but this claim is false, I concede that identical twins---who are, of course, born at practically the same time---often do have similar personalities. However, birth records were examined to find two individuals who were born 40 years ago on the same day and at exactly the same time---one in a hospital in Toronto and one in a hospital in New York. Personalities of these two individuals are in fact different.
Which one of the following is an assumption on which the psychologists argument depends?

(C) The geographical difference between Toronto and New York did not result in the two individuals having different horoscopes.
OA is in bold!!

Although i would have also marked C as the answer as none of them are closer to this one.Could please explain the reasoning behind this answer.

Even I would have gone with C, but this question assumes that we know Horoscopes, which, in all cases, will not be true.
When i try to think of the answer assuming no prior knowledge of horoscopes, i start dwelling towards B as well.
Need Help !!

Guys, if we change the correct answer choice from
(C) The geographical difference between Toronto and New York did not result in the two individuals having different horoscopes.

To
(New C) The individuals in Toronto and New York had identical horoscope.

Does the above change in wording make the choice easier to recognize.

1. Modern navigation systems, which are found in most of todays commercial aircraft, are made with low-power circuitry, which is more susceptible to interference than the vacuum-tube circuitry found in older planes. During landing, navigation systems receive radio signals from the airport to guide the plane to the runway. Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off course during landing, its dials dimming, when a passenger turned on a laptop computer. Clearly, modern aircraft navigation systems are being put at risk by the electronic devices that passengers carry on board, such as cassette players and laptop computers.
The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is a principle that the argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that can be drawn from the first.
(B) The first is a fact that argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that must be drawn from this argument.
(C) The first acknowledges a consideration that supports that main position; the second is that conclusion.
(D) The first is an evidence that supports the conclusion, the second is that conclusion.
(E) The first is a principle that is necessary for this argument, the second is a conclusion that could be drawn from this argument.

Tough Q. indeed ...

Second boldface is the conclusion of the argument.. so left with B,C,D,E ..

B is very strong with usage of 'must' .. so eliminated it..

Now my thought process was to see hw the argument fares if I remove the 1st boldface ... I think the conclusion can still be drawn without first boldface .. so D and E are out ....

Is it C ??

The interstitial nucleus, a sub-region of the brains hypothalamus, is typically smaller for male cats than for female cats. A neurobiologist performed autopsies on male cats who died from disease X, a disease affecting no more than 0.5 percent of male cats, and found that these male cats had interstitial nuclei that were as large as those generally found in female cats. Thus, the size of the interstitial nucleus determines whether or not male cats can contract disease X, but, the hypothalamus is known not to be causally linked to disease Y, and disease X is a subtype of disease Y.
The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is a fact in support of the consideration that is one of two points of this argument; the second is the alternative point that weighs against the first.
(B) The first is an evidence that supports the consideration that the argument includes; the second is the fact that weighs against that consideration that could be drawn from the first.
(C) The first is a general principle that is against the conclusion; the second is that conclusion.
(D) The first is an evidence that supports the conclusion; the second is an exceptional example.
(E) The first is a fact in support of the conclusion that the argument depends on; the second is a fact that is against the first one.

(B) The first is an evidence that supports the consideration that the argument includes; the second is the fact that weighs against that consideration that could be drawn from the first.

OA pl.
The president's nominees to federal circuit courts have been judged conservative for their stands on hot-button issues. But a review of their financial disclosure forms and Senate questionnaires reveals that the nominees are more notable for their close ties to corporate and economic interests, especially the energy and mining industries. Some of them were paid lobbyists for those same interests. Further, the nominees with industry ties were overwhelmingly appointed to circuit courts regarded as traditional battlegrounds over litigation affecting these industries. Independent observers who follow the federal bench believe that the extensive corporate involvement among so many of the nominees is unprecedented.

In the argument above, the two portions in boldface pay which of the following roles?

A)The first is a generalization that the author aims to attack; the second is that attack.

B)The first is a pattern that the author acknowledges as true; the second is the author's conclusion based on that acknowledgment.

C)The first is a phenomenon that the author accepts as true; the second is evidence in support of the author's conclusion.

D)The first is the author's position based on the evidence cited; the second is a pattern presented in support of that position.

E)The first is an exception to a rule introduced in the argument; the second provides the reasoning behind the exception.

OA is given as C, while I choose A, can sumbody help ?

Conclusion: nominees are more notable for their close ties to corporate and economic interests

Clearly, 2nd boldface is a statement supporting this conclusion ..

I cant figure out the role of 1st boldface .. it is just used to build the argument ... something that the author accepts as true, maybe ...

Tough Q. indeed ...

Another boldface:

Op-Ed letter: Town councils are usually unable to make the right decisions when the town is privy to every vote they cast. Many citizens are unhappy when the council votes to do things like raise taxes, and many of those unhappy citizens give council-members who vote for tax hikes a difficult time outside of the town meeting. Though anonymity in voting could give council members the autonomy to vote for legislation that negatively impacts community members, not giving them anonymity makes it impossible for them to vote for legislation that the community really needs.

What roles do the two boldface portions play in the letter-writers argument?

(A) The first is a reason to favor the writers conclusion; the second presents that conclusion.
(B) The first is a pattern of cause and effect the writer thinks is false in this case; the second offer reasons in favor of her prediction.
(C) The first suggests a generalization that the writer thinks is true in this case; the second offers a consideration that weighs against her conclusion.
(D) The first offers a reason in favor of the writers conclusion; the second offers a generalization that she believes holds true in this instance.
(E) The first is a pattern of cause and effect the writer agrees with; the second is the conclusion

is it (A) The first is a reason to favor the writers conclusion; the second presents that conclusion. ??

More and more computer programs that provide solutions to mathematical problems in engineering are being produced, and it is thus increasingly unnecessary for practicing engineers to have a thorough understanding of fundamental mathematical principles. Consequently, in training engineers who will work in industry, less emphasis should be placed on mathematical principles, so that space in the engineering curriculum will be available for other important subjects.

The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(C) The first is the part of premise that the argument includes; the second is the inference that could be drawn from this passage.

My take is in bold.

C
The first a general pattern(catch the word "usually") which has evolved, and writes agrees on it by stating its causes in next lines. 2nd is the conclusion. Please correct if wrong. Just started with GMAT prep few days back πŸ˜ƒ

Gasoline-powered boat engines manufactured in the a North American country prior to 1990 contribute significantly to the pollution found in the worlds oceans. In 1990, however, the government imposed stricter pollution controls on gasoline engines manufactured for boats, and beginning in 1995, the government imposed a program of inspections for pre-1990 boat engines with increasingly rigorous pollution standards. As the older boat engines fail to pass inspection, boat owners are increasingly retiring their old engines in favor of newer, less-polluting boat engines. As a result, the amount of pollution these older boat engines emit into the worlds oceans will steadily decrease over the next en years.
The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is a pattern of cause and effect that acts as an evidence in support of this argument; the second is the conclusion that can be drawn from this argument.
(B) The first is a fact that acts as a principle in support of this argument; the second is the conclusion that must be drawn from this argument.
(C) The first is a pattern of cause and effect that acts as an special evidence in support of the conclusion; the second is a general point that can be drawn from this argument.
(D) The first is a pattern of cause and effect that acts as the third evidence in support of the argument; the second is a conclusion that must be true.
(E) The first is a final evidence in support of the argument; the second is a conclusion that can be drawn only from the first.

my ans: (A) The first is a pattern of cause and effect that acts as an evidence in support of this argument; the second is the conclusion that can be drawn from this argument.

to say ..the second is a conclusion "that must be true" is a bit rigid, compared to.. "that can be drawn" cause ...
if the no. of boats increase multi-fold the even with the newer engines..pollution level can remain constant or even increase..

correct me, if i'm wrong

I think A...
The survival of the publishing industry depends upon the existence of a public who will buy the printed word in the form of newspapers, books and magazines. Over the past several years, however, the advance of electronic media, particularly CD-ROMs, online computer services, and the Internet, has made 9information available to the public electronically without the need for printed materials. As the availability of electronic media increases and as it is more easily accessible, the public has less need for printed materials. So the publishing industry is threatened by the advance of the computer information age.
The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is the part of evidence that the argument includes, the second is the conclusion that can be drawn only from the first.
(B) The first is the second-premise that the argument includes; the second is the conclusion that is reasonably drawn form this passage.
(C) The first is the second-premise that the argument includes, the second is the inference that must be drawn from this argument.
(D) The first is the fact that must be true, the second is the inference that can be correctly drawn from this argument.
(E) The first is the part of premise that the argument depends on; the second is the conclusion that is incorrectly drawn from this argument

by tommorow i will ppst OAs for both Qs i posted timm that time keep discussing!!

Is the answer B...first one certainly is a premise...and reasonably is less strong than must be drawn
