The workers at Bell Manufacturing will shortly go on strike unless the management increases their wages. As Bells president is well aware, however, in order to increase the workers wages, Bell would have to sell off some of its subsidiaries. So, some of Bells subsidiaries will be sold.
The conclusion above is properly drawn if which one of the following is assumed?
(A) Bell Manufacturing will begin to suffer increased losses.
(B) Bells management will refuse to increase its workers wages.
(C) The workers at Bell Manufacturing will not be going on strike.
(D) Bells president has the authority to offer the workers their desired wage increase.
(E) Bells workers will not accept a package of improved benefits in place of their desired wage increase.the term in bold is not explicitly mentioned in paragraph and this already seems to be restatement.

for the option C as OA check the part that ihave marked in bold in para.

NO man its still not clear and still not in the position to believe that
its correct to negate a clearly stated premise...as OP C does...

Imagine this...
"atul can't go to office if he doesnt buy a Car. To buy a car he need to break his Fix deposit account. So he will break his fix deposit account"....here the conclusion is He will break his FD..
assumption can be there is no other way to get money for car...apart from breaking FD...
according to the question the ans should be "atul will not gonna buy a car"....some explanation i have seen...in support of C....
see the below link...i think its a question of formal logic and i hvnt studied tht yet, may be later i get it...

In an attempt to reduce the crime rate, the governor is getting tough on criminals and making prison conditions harsher. Part of this effort has been to deny inmates the access they formerly had to college-level courses. However, this action is clearly counter to the governors ultimate goal, since after being released form prison, inmates who had taken such courses committed far fewer crimes overall than other inmates.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A.Not being able to take college-level courses while in prison is unlikely to deter anyone from a crime that he or she might otherwise have committed.
B.Former inmates are no more likely to commit crimes than are members of the general population.
C.The group of inmates who chose to take college-level courses were not already less likely than other inmates to commit crimes after being released.
D.Taking high school level courses in prison has less effect on an inmates subsequent behavior than taking college-level courses does.
E.
The governors ultimate goal actually is to gain popularity by convincing people that something effective is being done about crime.

My take option C

My take C because its been stated that "some of Bells subsidiaries will be sold"

I'll go with (A).....it correctly states that if the fish are able to reproduce successfully in areas that are not affected by temperature change...the dam must be responsible for the problem...

A theory is either true or false. Galileo's observations of Jupiter's satellites that the Ptolemaic theory of the motion of celestial bodies is false. Therefore, since the Copernican theory of planetary motion is inconsistent with the Ptolemaic account, Galileo's observations of Jupiter's satellites proved the truth of the Copernican theory.

The argument above is open to the objection that it makes the questionable assumption that

(A) whoever first observed something inconsistent with the truth of the Ptolemaic theory should be credited with having proved that theory false
(B) there are some possible observations that would be inconsistent with the account given by the Copernican theory but consistent with the account given by the Ptolemaic theory
(C) the Ptolemaic and Copernican theories, being inconsistent, cannot both be based on exactly the same evidence
(D) numerous counterexamples were necessary in order to show the Ptolemaic theory to be false
(E) the Ptolemaic and Copernican theories, being inconsistent, cannot both be false

I will go with E
Two decades after the Emerald River Dam was built, none of the eight fish species native to the Emerald River was still reproducing adequately in the river below the dam. Since the dam reduced the annual range of water temperature in the river below the dam from 50 degrees to 6 degrees, scientists have hypothesized that sharply rising water temperatures must be involved in signaling the native species to begin the reproductive cycle.

Which of the following statements, if true, would most strengthen the scientists hypothesis?
(A) The native fish species were still able to reproduce only in side streams of the river below the dam where the annual temperature range remains approximately 50 degrees.
(B) Before the dam was built, the Emerald River annually overflowed its banks, creating backwaters that were critical breeding areas for the native species of fish.
(C) The lowest recorded temperature of the Emerald River before the dam was built was 34 degrees, whereas the lowest recorded temperature of the river after the dam was built has been 43 degrees.
(D) Nonnative species of fish, introduced into the Emerald River after the dam was built, have begun competing with the declining native fish species for food and space.
(E) Five of the fish species native to the Emerald River are not native to any other river in North America.

My take is A

I will go with C. what is the actual answer?

One tax-reform proposal that has gained increasing support in recent years is the flat tax, which would impose a uniform tax rate on incomes at every level. Opponents of the flat tax say that a progressive tax system, which levies a higher rate of taxes on higher-income taxpayers, is fairer, placing the greater burden on those better able to bear it. However, the present crazy quilt of tax deductions, exemptions, credits, and loopholes benefits primarily the high-income taxpayer, who is consequently able to reduce his or her effective tax rate, often to a level below that paid by the lower-income taxpayer. Therefore, ______
(A) higher-income taxpayers are likely to lend their support to the flat-tax proposal now being considered by Congress
(B) a flat-tax system that allowed no deductions or exemptions would substantially increase actual government revenues
(C) the lower-income taxpayer might well be penalized by the institution of a flat-tax system in this country
(D) the progressive nature of our present tax system is more illusory than real
(E) the flat tax would actually be fairer to the lower-income taxpayer than any progressive tax system could be.

hi...i could not able to understand the logic behind it...wage increase is emplyees demand...so if it fulfilled then they it implies that they will not go for strike.....but management definitely assumed that benefit of running a company by increasing wages is more profitable....to decide on selling the subsidiaries....so A is also logical....please clear the doubt

The question asks us to draw a conclusion...in this case we have to stick to the
premise
...although many premises can be drawn from the argument...but the
conclusion should put more emphasis on the last premise "however...."...one
A) Incorrect---no premise is given in support of this conclusion
B) Incorrect---premise doesnt indicate towards revenue..they just comparing high vs low tax payers
C) Incorrect---no premise is given in support of this conclusion
D) Correct----the "However..." premise says that there are loopholes in the progressive tax system...as doesn't actually that effective as it promise...means illusionary..hence correct
E) Incorrect---no premise indicate that flat tax system will be beneficial to low tax payers

Hence D

hi...i could not able to understand the logic behind it...wage increase is emplyees demand...so if it fulfilled then they it implies that they will not go for strike.....but management definitely assumed that benefit of running a company by increasing wages is more profitable....to decide on selling the subsidiaries....so A is also logical....please clear the doubt

hi...
your answer choice..."Bell Manufacturing will begin to suffer increased losses"
is completely incorrect as it is out of scope of the argument....the premise never
discussed about their effectiveness...for ex..it's never been said that if workers
go for strkie..company do not suffer loss...or vice verca....
Thinking about the loss or profit of the company and then on that basis making the conclusion is a wrong thing to do here...as its not our concern...stick wid the premise and think about premise only...
I agree that in real situation the company take a decision which is in their best profitable
interest....but we are not taking about real situations...
secondly try to negate ur ans choice...the negated choice will be
"Bell Manufacturing will not necessarily begin to suffer increased losses"
now this assumption do not affect the conclusion...because after selling subsidiaries..may the company is making looses...but still that may be lesser than the losses which they made if the workers go on strike...so c company is still making losses although less...but a loss is loss

Hope this helps
Thanks
Emperor: The enemy empire across the sea has harassed us for centuries. I want to conquer it and stop it once and for all. What advice can you give me?
Admiral: If you cross the sea, a mighty empire will fall.
Emperor: In that case, prepare the troops. We set sail tonight.
Of the following, the strongest criticism of the Emperor's decision to invade would be that it
(A) is certain to lead to the emperor's defeat
(B) is based on opinion rather than objective facts about troop strength
(C) contradicts the Admiral's statement
(D) fails to consider fully the possible meanings of the Admiral's advice

(E) is a futile strategy for solving the problem at hand

Its a good tricky question...IMO D
Reasons...see the meaning of Admiral's statement...it can take both the stands...in favor or against favor...so just imagine...here in this question as we are reading as a 3rd person..we r not sure about the meaning of Admiral's statement....its a 2-way meaning then how Emperor thought that the Admiral is saying in his favor....don't assume the following things...like...may be Emperor take the decision as the Admiral's statement hurted his ego...or Admiral gave him some hand sign or something that he is saying in his favor....do not assume stick to the premise
Initially i though it should be op B as this statement seems logical...but then i realize this op has some flaw...according to this statement "if emperor made his decision on the basis of objective facts like troop strength then in that case his decision is correct"....well objective fact is just out of the so many things required to make such a decision...for ex...weather conditions fav or infavorable...strategy...ties with the enemies' enemy...also need to be considered..so this means thats saying this that since emperor didn't take his decision on the basis of objective fact and thus his decision is wrong....saying this is completely incorrect...
so again...the same thing...do not assume just stick to the given premise...and the only given fact is emperor may be mistook the Admiral's statement...
Hence D
Free public education is the best form of education there is. Therefore, we must fight to ensure its continued existence; that is, we must be ready to defend the principle of equality of educational opportunity. Because this principle is we worth defending, it is clear that free public education is better than any other form of education.
Which one of the following illustrates the same weak reasoning as found in the passage?
(A) I love music, and thats why I listen to it constantly. I have my stereo or radio on every waking minute. Since I play music all the time, I must really love it.
(B) Books are my most valuable possessions. My books are like my friendseach pleases me in different ways. Just as I would give up everything to save my friends, so too with my books.
(C) I would much rather be poor and respected than be rich and despised. To have the respect of others is far more valuable than to have millions of dollars.
(D) I have never been betrayed by any of my friends. They have been true to me through good times and bad. Therefore I will never betray any of my friends.
(E) Because every plant I have ever seen has green leaves, I have concluded that all plants must have green leaves. This looks like a plant but it does not have green leaves, so it cannot be a plant.

Thanks for posting this such a wonderful question...after u posted this question i studied the concept of circular reasoning which is used in this question...i know the OA, but i wish that other people will give this question their best try...so if needed i will post my explanation later...

keep posting such questions...good job

Ans: A

Stmnt A: Free public education is the best form of education there is.

Stmnt B: we must fight to ensure its continued existence.

here Stmnt B is because of Stmnt A and not vice-versa.

A implies B and so B doesn't imply A.

Option A uses similar line of reasoning involving love for music(A) and playing it consistently(B).

What's the OA?
Free public education is the best form of education there is. Therefore, we must fight to ensure its continued existence; that is, we must be ready to defend the principle of equality of educational opportunity. Because this principle is we worth defending, it is clear that free public education is better than any other form of education.
Which one of the following illustrates the same weak reasoning as found in the passage?
(A) I love music, and that's why I listen to it constantly. I have my stereo or radio on every waking minute. Since I play music all the time, I must really love it.

OA is in bold!!

check the below written explanation
i saw this explanation written somewhere, just copied that and now pasting the same as i find this explanation really good...a concept of circular reasoning...

It is a circular reasoning:

premise:Free public education is the best form of education there is

premise:Therefore, we must fight to ensure its continued existence; that is, we must be ready to defend the principle of equality of educational opportunity.

Conclusion:Because this principle is we worth defending, it is clear that free public education is better than any other form of education.

Both conclusion and premise state the same.

A tells the same

(A) I love music, and that's why I listen to it constantly. I have my stereo or radio on every waking minute. Since I play music all the time, I must really love it.
Premise:I love music, and that's why I listen to it constantly
Premise:I have my stereo or radio on every waking minute.
Conclusion:Since I play music all the time, I must really love it.

b)Books are my most valuable possessions. My books are like my friends-each pleases me in different ways. Just as I would give up everything to save my friends, so too with my books.

The premise and conclusion are different here.
C and D is the same as B

(E) Because every plant I have ever seen has green leaves, I have concluded that all plants must have green leaves. This looks like a plant but it does not have green leaves, so it cannot be a plant.

premise and conclusion are close but not same..
Someone please help me with this question..

A researcher discovered that people who have low levels of immune system activity tend to score much lower on tests of mental health than do people with normal or high immune system activityThe researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease
The researcher's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A) High immunesystem activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune, system activity does
(B) Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body systems.
(C) People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness
(D) Mental illness does not cause people's immune-system activity to decrease.
(E) Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment.

it's B option from my point of view
